The weaknesses of La Salle's on campus home are apparent, but less discussed is what should replace it. The Palestra seats 8500, Temple's Licouras Center seats 10,200, St. Joes (PA) seats 4200, Delaware's Bob Carpenter Center holds 5000, Drexel shoehorns 2509 into the Daskalakis Athletic Center, and Villanova's Pavillion seats 6500, pending renovations.
If and when La Salle finally moves on a new home for basketball, how many fans should it be able to accommodate?

How many come to graduation and things like that? Just off the top of my head I would say 5000.

I put 3000-3999, but I think somewhere 3500-4500 is the ideal number. I'd rather a small, rocking arena than something that never fills. Give me 3500 seats and 6-8 VIP boxes.
Think Temple's first level. That's what I want...bleachers for the students an all.

5k tops. Nice round environs. A slightly bigger Sojka Pavilion. See Bucknell.

About the size of Hagan I would say.
Btw I was underwhelmed by their place, especially in light of how they crap on TGA. The powers-to-be should look at Hagan as an example of what not to do. The court and seating is unimpressive and looks better on television (opposite of Gola.)
The renovated parts, while very clean, have what I can only describe as a sickly sterile, almost health care institutional quality to them. Odd.

It doesn't matter what we say. Isn't the neighborhood going to pull a Radnor move and block any hope for expansion? Won't past attendance scare the bondholders?

RE: Radnor not La Salle in this answer. I've read two stories that the renovation of the Pavilion is starting at some point after this season. First story was about Nova playing at Wells Fargo all season next year and the other was about the Indoor tennis (the Freedoms maybe) that is normally at the Pavilion being moved to SJU of PA this summer. So they're appeased the Radnor folk I suppose.

There's no material change in anything that would require higher level approval than the usual permit bureaucracy; otherwise they'd be going through the suburban rigamarole. The consensus among their fans is that the school traded off not tinkering with the basketball facility so they could get all the construction now ongoing along Lancaster Ave green lighted, but they diverge on whether or not it was worth fighting over. If I were a Villanova fan I'd be pissed that someone spent $22m to calcify the shortcomings of the Pavilion for the next 30 years. Of course, if I were a Villanova fan I'd also hate Radnor Twp about as much as they and La Salle both hate St. Joes (PA), because the residents are trying to kill any and all development with a thousand cuts. From the Daily Local News, with regards to the parking lot currently being developed:"Rick Leonardi, a resident and member of the CARE committee, said, “I’m glad (that) we have been informed that test results exist which show asbestos release will not be a public health concern as the surface of main lot is taken up and hauled away. In fact, I would like to see this report to know who performed the tests, where and when they were performed, what if any other contaminants were tested for, what was found, whether the soil beneath the paved surface was tested as well, etc." Tish Long, another resident, said that residents would like an independent asbestos evaluation. “Much is at stake,” Long said. “Thirteen acres of asphalt represents possible contamination that is very alarming to the community. The residents need to know that their health, safety and welfare is being protected. In order to safeguard the residents, the board of commissioners needs to support the residents in their request to engage third-party experts to come in to assess, verify and certify that every measure is being taken to safeguard the community. Without that, there is no trust.” YES YOU IDIOT A PARKING LOT IS CLEARLY THE GREEN ALTERNATIVE HERE

I looked this up last week. I'm pretty sure we presently rank 299th in the nation in arena size and there's no one behind us where you'd say "maybe it's not so bad".

I went with 5000-5999 in the hope that whoever runs the building, the school or a Ticketmaster type group, will be able to get some concerts or comedians in there that can bring the school more $$$. Like pro arenas, you need to figure out money-makers outside games, which including the women's team, comes to roughly 30 dates per year.

*Reads title of post, grabs popcorn* Yeah, this should be good. Definitely on the off-season to-do list, right after "Fire Giannini" and before we redesign the Explorer's head again.

Come to think of it, we had gone a while without a new "new arena" thread being started. We were overdue. Perfect timing with the ongoing fanboat mutiny. "Walk the plank! But ignore us while we talk about buying a bigger, better boat..."

Unless the A10 changed their requirements, no new arena can be less than 4,000 seats. I would prefer 5,500 regular seats including bleacher seats for students behind each basket and 500 or so mid-level box seats.
6,000 - 6,250 capacity would be great. We would definitely fill it on weekend games with a young coach who brings passion and excitement and stresses aggressive defensive from the guards.
Build an attached Wawa and Chickie's & Pete's on the street side and now you are cookin with gas!
The Wawa Arena - Tom Gola Court. Lionel Simmons athletic facility. Michael Brooks concourse. Ken Durrett gift shop. And MisterD's parking garage located 4 blocks away.

So I rechecked and I lied. We're 298th in the nation. One high-mid (Fordham) is lower (built in 1925), no majors are lower and four mid-majors are lower. Everyone else below us is a low major. The A-10 average is 6,922.

Not sure which is more frustrating, new coach threads or new arena threads. Losing to St. Joes and Penn is more frustrating. I wanted to move on since there are only so many ways one can say "Fire Giannini." I also combed 5 pages of threads with the word "arena" in it, which went back two years, and "facility" returns similar results. TGA hasn't sold out since last year's season opener against Towson, and I was genuinely curious as to what other folks around here thought would be an appropriate arena size. If you want to continue wallowing in the spiritual morass that G ball induces in all of us, there's half a dozen other threads that serve that purpose well, and probably many more to come.
