*Reads title of post, grabs popcorn* Yeah, this should be good. Definitely on the off-season to-do list, right after "Fire Giannini" and before we redesign the Explorer's head again. Come to think of it, we had gone a while without a new "new arena" thread being started. We were overdue. Perfect timing with the ongoing fanboat mutiny. "Walk the plank! But ignore us while we talk about buying a bigger, better boat..." New arena, (er..facility) threads eventually make their way into 50% of the OTHER threads. We weren't overdue.

I just want seats behind the basket so opposing players can see 8 students when shooting FTs? Jk...but not really.

Can you imagine someone using the logic "we're not going to renovate this restaurant and improve the menu until we're filling three turns every night"?

I voted 5000-5999. But it really should be between 4999 and 5001.

I voted for "1,000 or less" because why would we build an arena 3 times smaller than Gola when the current largest gripe is size?

So I rechecked and I lied. We're 298th in the nation. One high-mid (Fordham) is lower (built in 1925), no majors are lower and four mid-majors are lower. Everyone else below us is a low major. The A-10 average is 6,922. That's why you go 6,000... don't build it for what we draw now, build it for what we want to draw.

Something new, shiny, and state of the art, 5K - can offer to the CL for playoffs? Hockey, anyone?

La Salle is never going to routinely draw 6000 barring a string of years where they are in the top 25. Even teams that are in the top 25 routinely don't draw 6000. Temple's average attendance last year was 6100. Villanova's was 8100. La Salle's was 2400, and we know that it was probably closer to 1500-2000 in actuality. Temple has 10x the number of alumni that La Salle does and play in a better league. Villanova was the national champion and play at the Wells Fargo 5 times a year. Don't need to go big. Go nice. Go loud.

You're talking 2,500 students instead of 250... that's not taking into account if enrollment gets back to the levels it was when we were there Joe... this thing could balloon if it is run correctly.

When the Lionel team played at the decrepit Civic Center I think they averaged better than 6,000 with a few 10,000 sellouts. Of course, the team was 100-31 during Lionel's years, whuch means we will support a winning program. We have a lot of work to do to get back to that level. As great as the Palestra is, it us not our home. We need to be able to host big name opponents on campus. A legitimate 6,000 seat arena that does not look like a high school gym is what the program needs long term. I think the original plan for Gola was 7,000 before something happened- not sure of the specifics but the administration turned off some big money alums/backers.

It's hard for me to see the American as the better league when it most likely has a termination date, has multiple declining programs and very few rivalry games. Back to the arena talk which I LOVE. 6,000 seats is too many. I think Towson's arena is perfect for us but I really don't feel like covering this all again. It will eventually come but who the hell knows when.

I think their arena looks good and isn't too big. But at 85M as reported on a site I saw, I have concerns the University and/or alum would be willing to commit to that. Although, it did say it took like 2 years to construct from the time they broke ground and I can just imagine what that would do for recruiting from the time it's announced to the time it breaks ground to when it opens. The buzz could be insane...

Who has it worse: La Salle without seating behind the baskets and no luxury boxes OR the Oakland A's and Raiders (the last MLB and NFL teams that share a stadium) sharing an old structure that is prone to flooding?

The previous administration apparently said no to turning the TGA floor from N/S to E/W. The current administration should say yes. Our program is half-decent, but our fan base is weak and it would be a GIANT WASTE OF MONEY to build a new gym. Renovate the TGA and flip the court. We (as fans) do not deserve a new gym. We do, however, deserve a place to watch games where people don't enter the court under one of the baskets.

I remember us arm-chair architects figuring out that this would work, but I have it on good authority that something would be possible. I do not, however, believe that a new arena is out of the question. It doesn't need to be the Wells Fargo center. It can be clean and intimate without being huge and expensive.

I'm not an "engineer", but I imagine fixing all of the issue with Gola would leave you with a very expensive half-assed version of what a high major D1 should have.

New arena is obviously the way to go. I would hold out for a new building over renovation.
However, this will come only after enrollment has increased, stabilized and then after some good ole fashion La Salle feet dragging.
So on the very dim horizon...I doubt the current coach will be present at the groundbreaking or opening.

I'm not an "engineer", but I imagine fixing all of the issue with Gola would leave you with a very expensive half-assed version of what a high major D1 should have. We did the half assed thing 20 years ago. Longtime poster, Louth, is an architect, and had the plans to design Haymen into a 6,500 seat arena with seats on all 4 sides, AT FUCKING COST! He was told thanks, but no thanks, and we were stuck with the big high school gym we have today. If that 6,500 seat arena is there today, maybe we aren't an A10 doormat for close to a decade. Maybe Lavoy Allen, Mark Tyndale, Dionte Christmas, etc would've chosen 20th and Olney over North Broad. Maybe we get the Morris twins instead of the Williams twins. Maybe this thing would've taken off and we aren't in the A10 (far fetched). However, it should be easy to connect the dots for everybody. Don't half ass this, don't build a Hagan Arena, try some second level thinking.

Yes, I remember that Louth as architect situation AT COST. Does anyone know the rationale behind turning it down? Did that plan have seats behind baskets? I'd bet there's more to it than just pure rejection out of hand, but barring some sort of La Salle Wikileaks type shenanigans I doubt we'll ever know. Would love to see the plans though, if they're still on the internet somewhere.

Ask Louth what the story was, he's been open about it on the board.

It's like the architect went to an MC Escher exhibition and thought "Hmmm... yes." louth is apparently not a very prolific poster, because I combed through all 19 of his posts and none of them mentioned it. Or did this come about on the old Scout board?

The Olney Ave wall was going to be blown out and I believe the third floor would have been extended over the top of the mezzanine level toward the parking lot. Capacity was going to be in the 6,200 range.

Blowing out the wall means a longer structure and room behind, no?

Isn't this whole argument hogwash? Capital improvements on the Haymen Center is like putting lipstick on a pig - it's only a temporary fix that answers just one of a hundred complaints.
