When a rich patient loses a lot of blood, they get an expensive infusion. Portal developments 2024
apnews.com/article/transfer-portal-college-basketball-0113b42d2ab4ace484d42fe2f1c533ad
It's like a portal vein. Hoops imitating biology:
Your portal vein carries blood from organs in your abdomen (belly) to your liver. This blood must pass through your liver for filtering and processing before it returns to your body’s general circulation. So, your portal vein plays a vital role in draining many smaller veins (tributaries) in your belly and sending the blood into your liver.

Rest of the A-10 cleaning up in the portal. Dayton just nabbed Posh Alexander. We have so far to go.

Maybe shulga will get drafted by the knicks now and those la salle alums who root for the knicks won’t only be rooting for nova players but also a vcu ram. Smh.

True, but opting for the draft would have netted him much more, I'd assume.

rj is a great player but not one mock draft i looked at had him getting drafted and he was not invited to either the nba or g league combines.
no guaranteed nba money in the cards for a rookie 6' guard.

There are a number of recent examples of players staying for the maximum duration at their schools and having really successful NBA careers. Jaquez on Miami from UCLA is the first that comes to mind.

All-ACC selection Norchad Omier of Miami is transferring to Baylor Weird one… Miami is known for NIL rewards reminds me of a story about Baylor from 1990. La Salle was playing in the Daiwa Ball Tournament in Japan and the band and cheerleaders got to go - all expenses paid by Daiwa Corporation. Baylor and Idaho were the other US teams in the tournament. We were hanging around with some of the female members of the Baylor band back at the hotel and trying to get them to party with us. None of them would drink. They told us Baylor was a dry campus and they weren't allowed to drink on or off campus if they were underage, and how going to chapel was a requirement for going to the school. Despite my attempts at persuasion, pointing out that one could purchase Sake from vending machines in Tokyo (which at age 19 I found to be the greatest thing ever although the quality of the Sake was probably equivalent to truck stop sushi) and a different drinking age (which I made up), we couldn't get them to budge. Other notes from that tournament...we were asked by the tournament directors to play during the game, not just timeouts. At one point we were playing and a player from La Salle missed two free throws in a tight game against Baylor (we ultimately won by 5). Richie P came up into the stands screaming at us not to play during free throws. Later that night at a dinner, Speedy came over and apologized, dryly saying he missed the free throws because the player (i can't remember who) didnt take practicing free throws seriously enough and it had nothing to do with us playing. And now I feel old realizing that was 34 years ago.

This is what everyone is up against. Jonathan Givony @draftexpress · 2m BREAKING: Great Osobor, the top-available player in the transfer portal, has committed to Washington, George Langberg of GSL Sports Group told ESPN. Osobor will be the highest-paid known player in college basketball, with 2 million dollars of NIL deals already in place.

These guys are pros, they're no longer college basketball players. I had no problem with players maybe making $50K to $100K per season (plus they get a free education, room and board), but this is stupid money now. College basketball is rapidly going to sh*t.

Osobor's 3rd team in his 4 years of college. Why doesn't he have to sit a year with this being his 2nd transfer? And he has an agent negotiating these deals. What a joke. Let's not call it college sports anymore or call them student-athletes. Calling it that does a disservice to those student-athletes working hard daily in their sports, performing in the classroom, and many times being on work-study while in school. Those are the real student-athletes. Not these pros. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/40137329/great-osobor-transferring-washington-big-nil-deals

When this kid doesn't perform up to expectations, and/or Washington plays in the NIT, do you think 2 million is going to stick? I don't. At some point, it will be a Krispy Kreme over saturation situation and the numbers will shrink. I don't know when, but it will happen. Del interviewed Martelli on his Black Cager website, and Phil made this point... you have a decent player, but not a future pro. He makes 150K per year, for 4 years, for a grand total of 600K. He's 22 years old, graduates, coach asks him, what do you want to do next year? Player says, I want to go into banking. OK, we can get you a job for 65K per year to start... Martelli is worried that we're setting these kids up to fail after school. He's talking about the guys who won't make millions playing pro ball, but will make low 6 figures in college. I've never heard this point of view before, but it's a good point. Regardless of your opinion of Phil, he's smart and gives a great interview.

1.) First and foremost, Phil is an arrogant, narcissistic putz. He's a better than average coach but not a great coach.
2.) Let's be honest, a lot of these players were set up to fail even before they started getting paid. Not all kids and all programs, but many of them didn't give a hoot about the players future after college. So I don't have an issue with them getting paid within a reasonable, realistic dollar range.
3.) I agree somewhat with your premise that the outrageous payments will come back down to earth...but only for smaller programs. The big programs will continue the arms race because they have gullible fanbases that will shell out for it. Maybe the numbers will come down slightly for them, but it won't be as big a drop as it will be with the smaller schools once they start saying enough is enough.

So Martelli's argument is it would be better for a kid to start a $65K per year job without having already made $600K because then that $65K wouldn't effectively be a pay cut?

Not sure I understand the argument that making more in NIL money than you will earn upon leaving college in your first job is a bad thing. It all depends on the people around you and what you do with the NIL money. It may be disappointing to take a "pay cut" but if you're smart you'll still be ahead of the game.

Lost in the mix… the largest NIL deals are going to bigs/low post players due to relative scarcity, and not guards with much higher skill sets and upside. Connect this to the Rokas loss and difficulty recruiting a bonafide replacement any way you will.
