Gary Parrish Verified account @garyparrishcbs 36s36 seconds ago More Kenny Johnson, who was fired at Louisville because of the ongoing FBI investigation, is under consideration for, and likely to fill a spot on, Ashley Howard’s staff at La Salle, a source told @cbssports.

My concern would be if we did hire him he wouldn’t be able to explain what happened or be candid about it since it’s an ongoing legal issue. How do we know about the person we are hiring then?

Yay : University of Maryland grad with a degree in cell biology and molecular genetics.
Yikes : He was making $550,000 per year at Louisville ( not including bonuses ), the highest amount for an assistant coach in the ACC.

Was he collateral damage? Did the entire staff get fired? Is he a target in the FBI investigation? If he is just guilt by association and he vets well then I am ok with it. Will be one interesting interview.

One of the problems with this hire is that the investigation will hang over the program for years. Even if he was not involved he will be a material witness. He won’t be able to give 100% to La Salle and will always be tainted

I have no problem with it. When you think Louisville, you think Pitino. Had no idea who Kenny Johnson was prior to this thread. From what I understand, he's not abusive, didn't hit anyone, no conviction of any kind. Just under investigation. So I imagine at this point, he's not going to do anything stupid, and try to stay under the radar. Bigger question is...if he was getting paid $550K at Louisville, what's Ash paying him?

"probably"? and you know this how? Because it was almost a month ago. It wasn't like this Louisville guy just became available. what was almost a month ago? an unfounded rumor connecting rice and la salle that was only reported one place (this board) on the entire interweb? i think the chances are considerably higher that rice was probably never considered for the job.

Brutal:
"A source told CBS Sports that multiple head coaches have tried to hire Johnson in recent weeks only to have a school administrator eventually nix the deal."

Yay. We should be able to craft an agreement to address this if something nasty happens and it is unlikely the FBI goes for anyone other than Miller and Pitino. It is a calculated risk to have a connected guy drive better talent and bring ACC level experience to complement our man who has two rings.

I’m going to trust the admin and Ash on this one and that they’ve done proper due diligence to eliminate any risk Mr Johnson will be implicated in any NCAA or FBI investigations.
We complain La Salle doesn’t make big moves or thinks outside the box. Now that they have, we are going to worry that they don’t thoroughly review a candidate like this?

These are exactly my thoughts. Is it a risk? Yes. Will there be some snark? Yes. But I also trusted that the Pres. and Bill B. did their homework and are comfortable with this. Neither one is the type to take a stupid risk and I don't think our new coach is either. I think they checked things out and are satisfied.

If you read the article the guy has a letter from his attorney and the southern district's office saying he is nothing but a potential witness. The guy is innocent and a great basketball coach this is a steal of a hire for La Salle.

He's clearly a good coach. You don't become the highest paid assistant in the ACC by being a slouch. This is nothing but a slam-dunk, if the 'nothing but a witness' narrative is true.

His lawyer says he was told that by the US Attorney’s office. Not quite the same thing.

I’m willing to hear the administration out on this before passing judgement. Too much is invested in Howard and this program moving forward to undermine it with not doing their due diligence here
