I've lost sight of a big factor though -- this is in response to Penn State receiving more deposits than anticipated, and now they're in a crunch for housing. So they're trying to alleviate this issue by convincing some of the kids to go to these smaller campuses, helping to solve the housing issue. You can't tell a kid he can't come to Penn State Main Campus after you sent him an acceptance letter, so it's a gambling game. And this time, they may have admitted too many. Otherwise, they might find themselves in a weird spot similar to SJU of Penna's hotel-turned-dormitory. Just stumbled upon this follow-up... This spring, hundreds more students than anticipated enrolled at University Park by the May 1 deadline - so many that the university offered freshmen a $10,000 to $20,000 discount if they agreed to forego main campus their first year and attend a regional campus.
By last week's deadline, 288 students - 3.3 percent of the main campus freshman class - accepted the offer designed to ease crowding.www.philly.com/philly/education/20160622_288_freshmen_take_PSU_s_tuition_discount_offer.html

I think it's excellent. Great job by the University.
It's important to draw the distinction between being disappointed with the basketball program and proud of the University overall.

I am thrilled with a million things at La Salle right now and this is just another great example of fresh ideas to move the university forward. Totally awesome

Perhaps the University can convince Uber to fund the new arena!

Perhaps the University can convince Uber to fund the new arena! Given their 66B valuation, I think they could help us out.

Couple things about that Uber press release...
1. Doesn't the $1.99 Olney TC to anywhere thing duplicate La Salle's shuttle services for students? 1a. That $1.99 UberPool thing only lasts for two weeks. 2. Aside from the designed pickup point at Penn & Chew, is there actually any other benefit? The $15 off thing isn't a La Salle-specific thing.
I don't understand this otherwise, because not only does it duplicate the shuttle, but any student interested in using Uber is already using it. Even from an Uber-centric view, what do they get out of it?

Kids may already be using Uber and the discount may already be provided to many, but it's still nice to see a partnership become official. It's minor but having that association could be viewed as forward thinking and others may not be aware of it. Little to no effort for something that could have potential benefits. Not really anything to lose.

Read that story as well and really pissed me off. I don't like a lot of things about Villanova but I wholeheartedly support them in this case. People out there have way too much time on their hands to make this an issue. The one woman's comments about being "so stubborn" about this whole religion thing really was ridiculous.

The quotes from that "neighbor" in the article smacks of anti-Catholicism. Just for the hell of it I googled her and she's been a frequent opponent of any expansion of the university. I'd increase the cross height to 14 feet just because of the faux outrage about this proposal. Crosses, as shown on plan, will prob. pass the township's sign ordinance. Any challenge to the crosses by idiot neighbors is a loser under both free exercise and establishment clauses. Its a very tenuous argument that a religious symbol on private property, funding privately, albeit connected to a span over a state road amounts to government speech that endorses religion.

There's a minor question with regards to the funding side of things, but it'll never be asked because lawsuits are expensive. Otherwise the entire thing isn't as enlightened or principled (or as principled as reflexive anti-Catholicism can be) as you're assuming - it's just NIMBYism. It's why their hypothetical-based objections sound so dumb... they're grasping for straws. Radnor residents fight Villanova on literally everything, even though the parking lot development addresses most of their concerns. It's far too common and the same thing happens in places like Point Breeze and Kensington, even though preserving neighborhood character should be the last thing those places want to do. I always wonder what would happen if La Salle went on a similar building spree. In any case, cooler heads prevailed and it was approved 6-0, with one abstention.

Locals would protest it, along with that old white guy that I swear is a professional protester. I flipped shit on all of them in 2004 when they protested 20th Street being made a one way street. I slept in my brother's single room at Hilary's... and those numb nuts woke me up at 6:30 AM. So I stormed across the street, and started going off on them, until the Vietnam Vet security guard showed up... he told me that if I wanted to continue to yell, he wouldn't stop me, but if it escalated, I had to go. It was like pissing in the wind. I opted for cheesey eggs at B&G.

Misery loves company Dept.
Excerpts from posts today on St. Joe's basketball message board :
It's fun how, aside from the parts about winning, success, and donations, this sounds exactly like La Salle. I wonder if they'd saying the same thing if their season wasn't trashed by injuries.

I will, disappointingly, layer on.. Here is Vegas at a bar watching college basketball.. And "that song" comes on that I will always associate with our Sweet Sixteen run..
Then.. Witchita State highlights come on showing their win and then I am reminded how far our program has been allowed to fall in such a quick period of time..
Back to reality..
