Depth is overrated in this conference. If our top 7 guys stay healthy we will be fine but I know that's asking a lot. That's a bullshit statement. Dayton would've been a Sweet 16 team had they not run out of gas vs Oklahoma. This was due to 2 things, not having a player over 6'6, and lack of depth. I'm not a Khalid Lewis fan, but the guy filled a role here. We were excited to get Lewis from Delaware. People forget that he did shut down Tyreek Duren 2 years ago. Duren's a high level player, not a run of the mill point guard. At 6'3, Lewis can also defend bigger guards. Again, it's tough to play 4 guards when there's only 4 guards in the rotation now. You're right, many were excited to get Lewis from Delaware, especially after he had such a good game against us. But look at his career, he never had a game CLOSE to that. It was 1 game. He scored in double digits just once the following season he played, with most games have 2 or fewer assists (3 games with 3 or more). In his final year at LaSalle, he scored double digits just 5 times but improved to 9 games with 3 or more assists. If he were a scorer, I'd overlook the low assists (although 16 games with 1 or 0 assists from a guard is just terrible). If he were a point guard (pass first), then I'd overlook the 28 games he didn't score in double digits (16 games he scored 5 or fewer). He's a combo guard who isn't a legit scorer (usually a strong suit of a combo guard) nor a guy that can run an offense. Yes, he had a good game here and there, but so will anybody who is given enough chances. A career 35% shooter from the field, 28% from 3 and 67% from FT are below average (I'm being generous), especially for a guard. I'm sorry, I cannot and will not ever understand the love fest with Lewis. He's a proven below average player and people are making it seem like it's the end of the world. If we're so up in arms over losing a below average player, that shows we are used to being a bad team and are overdramatic. Are you really that hell bent over 1 or 2 games a year (if that) that he would make that kind of impact? 1 or 2 games out of 30+ is not necessary, highly inefficient and takes away from a younger guy(s). THat kind of attitude shows either a lack of confidence in the young guys being able to be below average at worse. Or, the young guys are just not good period. Don't worry so much, take a risk or you'll end up with the same frustrating results. If this team is bad next year, at least we know that the young guys can and should be overrecruited.

But look at his career, he never had a game CLOSE to that. It was 1 game. Except for the Villanova game, where he was the only guy besides Jerrell to show up.

I really don't think the W/L results this season are something to worry about. '16-'17 is the year for that. This year, all I want to see is young guys developing. And the more time they spend on the court, I think the better their chances are of developing well. Plus, I don't think Lewis' game is one that guys could learn that much from. Overall, we're going to be worse this year because he's gone. But we might end up being better in '16-'17 because of it.

INteresting, I found an article this morning that says Lewis gave a verbal to Illinois on 8/5. Unfortunately, the article requires a subscription. Based on the summary of the article before clicking on it, it says that Lewis committed. Sorry, I can't give more info...just google "khalid lewis" and click on the news tab...it should be the 4th link down.

Looks like Illinois is looking for depth after one of their guards went down. They seemed to focus on 5th year seniors to fill that void.

Not sure I agree their analysis. I don't see Lewis as a true PG and the writer seems to believe he is. I see Lewis as a combo guard with limited offensive ability (moreso scoring) because of his jumper. I think he's really good at driving to the hoop but not the best finisher. If what they're saying is true about his efficiency in pick-and-roll, then he could turn out to be valuable, especially if that is their playing style.
Good luck to him. I mean, he's going to a team that made the NIT last season and he gets to experience that "big" program experience. From UD to a Sweet 16 with LaSalle to Illinois. Not a bad collegiate career when it's all said and done.
Also-was he sitting out when LaSalle made the NIT?

I was kinda hoping he'd go down a level just because I wanted to see what he could do as a focal point. I think a lot of his shooting woes were more rhythm and opportunity than a complete inability to hit.

Thanks thelasallelunatic. So he hasn't had the chance to play postseason, that's a little bit of a bummer BUT he did travel with the travel during the Sweet 16 run (I hope).

Just wondering, since G is from that area does he have ANY connection whatsoever to the Illinois program? Just can't see him being able to contribute on that level.

G was a grad assistant at Illinois back when Lou Henson led them to the Final Four. I doubt if he has any current connections to the program.

Hopefully, he'll get to taste what it's like to be in postseason after missing out on the sweet 16. ThanKS for the info.

Kjmac just dropping knowledge. I think it is a wait and see with playing time, hope Khalid plays a big role but I don't know the roster well enough to say one way or another. The kid has got some real hustle and I can imagine him playing a big role late in games with shut down D.

Khalid always gave maximum effort here, he got his degree, never did anything to embarrass La Salle, and by all accounts, was a great teammate (many of them have tweeted well-wishes to him). I wish him nothing but the best at Illinois.

Agreed with kjmac, I'm interested to see how Lewis plays in The Big 10, just hurts to see a key component of our 4 guard system transfer.
