Shaka, it's hard to say. He's pretty tied to VCU, but if a major, major program came along and threw money at him, he'd probably go. I think the reason he didn't take the UCLA job was it wasn't a good fit style and recruiting wise. He either has to have a small list of programs he's waiting on or one dream job he's confident he'll get, right? Florida? Indiana? Syracuse in 3 years? I always thought the cream of the crop jobs were Duke, UNC, Kansas, Kentucky, Indiana, and UCLA.

Part of me is really afraid of what a post-Giannini La Salle program looks like. I know you can't make decisions based on fear, but for better or for worse, I find myself liking G and his idiosyncrasies more than hating them, mostly because I fear that they are better than any realistic alternative.

Not exactly true. I said it before but things have changed for the A10 as opposed to the mid 2000's. It isn't so much a stepping stone anymore Shaka and Archie are showing that. Both had opportunities to leave and stayed. Archie will leave when he gets the higher league program just like his brother. Don't kid yourself, he's biding his time. Shaka, it's hard to say. He's pretty tied to VCU, but if a major, major program came along and threw money at him, he'd probably go. I think the reason he didn't take the UCLA job was it wasn't a good fit style and recruiting wise. Will have to see. I think Archie is going to be around for a little bit. Dayton is definitely not a permanent spot but I think he is there to stay for some time. Not sure what great opening there are this season. Shaka is an interesting case. I was surprised he turned down UCLA and Marq. Good programs not that VCU isn't but definitely higher ceilings IMO.

The tone of this conversation resembles a eulogy. We have a coach, according to this conversation, good enough to coach in the Big East.
Coach G is not going moving on (as of today). This conversation is ill founded at best.
The topic is Coach G going to De Paul. Beyond a small vocal faction, there is no substance to this conversation.
Be afraid if De Paul steals our coach. John is our coach and the best coach to represent us for the foreseeable future ( 3 to 4 years).

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this conversation. I like coach G don't get me wrong. EVERYONE on this board appreciates what he did and does for this program. However, I can't sit here like many and not be curious to see how this plays out. Indiana, UNC, Richmond fans are somewhat tired of the Crean, Roy and Mooney era and many La Salle fans while aren't calling for G's head are little tired of the G era. He IS a candidate for the job and this job is a good fit for him due to numerous things but he probably never be considered for any of those other Big East jobs. IF he were to go I am interested in who his replacement be. In the most likely scenario he isn't going any where.

Funny you think something is over the top. Several conversations on this board take leeway to make a point.
I think you present great discussion points. You say De Paul is good fit, why? He hasn't lived in Chicago since college (or at least since prior to Rowan). While De Paul is a great school, what is the draw beyond a pay check? No one has had success since Ray Meyers.
It is an interesting "what if" conversation to see who La Salle would consider if Coach G left. We just need to careful what we hope for.

I don't know that anyone is "hoping" anything happens - this is probably one of the most reasonable threads in the history of the board. It's merely a discussin of what happens when G moves on, because someday that will be our reality.
It's idle philosophy right now from what I can tell. DePaul just happens to be the use case at the moment but it could be any school listing G as a potential candidate and the conversation could still happen here. This isn't a discussion about why he should leave its a discussion about what happens the day he does end up leaving

It is an interesting "what if" conversation to see who La Salle would consider if Coach G left. We just need to careful what we hope for. G is not a great X and O coach. I think G knows what he is doing on the defensive end, however, on the offensive end he struggles. I think he made a mistake in not staying with a four guard line up. It simplified it for him and it isn't that the offense runs itself it is just a lot easier to run an offense with guards that can score as opposed to trying to work an offense around your big men who didn't have much of a shot. G has rarely puts bad defensive teams on the court throughout his career. The A10 is guards league and G made a mistake in trying to rely on Zack and Wright the past two seasons. Good good players but it just doesn't work in this conference and for a coach that struggles with running an offense. Getting back to my point... So Oliver Purnell was a good coach. Why? Great X and O coach. Proved that at Dayton. He didn't do too poorly this year IMO. Unfortunately, his recruiting compared to the rest of the conference is subpar. Not really completely his fault. DePaul is a hard place to recruit. Why G is a good fit...falls within the similarities between La Salle and DePaul. La Salle was a bottom dweller program like DePaul is...La Salle doesn't have the resources to compete with VCU, Dayton or Richmond year in and year out. Yet, G has done that. He has gotten a lot out of a program that doesn't have a 5 star arena like Richmond or a large budget like VCU does yet he has been able to get more bigs names than Mooney has. DePaul is the same thing. Just doesn't have the history or resources to compete with Nova, Xavier or Georgetown. G can recruit very well given his limitations at La Salle. He has recruited players out of that area, found gems, attracted players to stay local and convinced players to come back home. Transfers has been his ace card. DePaul thinks he is a good candidate because of these reasons.

DePaul has been the doormat of the Big East for several years. Some say that it's a hard place to recruit. I'm not an expert on De Paul, but looking at their recruits this year they have 3, 3! power forwards rated one 4 star and two three stars plus a small forward at 2.7. We would kill for that level of commitment. G is getting a lot of love on this thread. I think it fear of the unknown. The reality is that he is a .500 coach. Would a new coach be better or worse? Don't know. Should we be happy with the mediocre we have or see if we can find someone who is new? Don't know if De Paul is really interested in G. But some time soon (2-3 years) we have to go in a different direction unless something changes or we are happy with .500.

Would not be surprised if G ends up being hired as De Paul head coach but don't know if that would be a good move considering all the problems coaches have had obtaining success there.

Both jobs would require a couple of eye-opening years. The problem lies in that it is very difficult to sustain success at both schools because of the commitment of both administrations. Not sure that DePaul job is much better than La Salle.

Not sure that DePaul job is much better than La Salle. I agree on the last statement, but it is higher profile. The players you can get to DePaul are going to be, on average, better than those you can get to La Salle. Steve Zack, Amar Stukes...they aren't getting on DePaul's roster. Better conference, more TV exposure, a larger recruiting budget... The jump from DePaul to a top-40 job is easier (and maybe 'possible') than the jump from La Salle.
