It has already been said numerous times. This is unsustainable.
College basketball, Division 1, and the way we remember it is ending. It is never coming back and most schools won’t survive this when the chain reaction is done. The question is how fast before the end comes? Honestly it is coming much faster than I thought it would.
There will be the lower levels where La Salle will reside and probably a 100-150 others schools will reside. Can those schools make themselves revelent in that area to have chances to participate with the top level in a tournament that favors the top level but keeps the American Public craving the Cinderella story that college basketball has previously provided? I think that is only thing holding this together at the moment.
Question I have is how the lower level can make themselves interesting and material enough to help sustain the Cinderella aspect of college basketball.
Regardless, the descent we are on now is going to be tough for all of us to handle. In fact it is already ending for some already.

If he’s getting $350K I’ll happily wear a Brickus Nova jersey. Good for him, that’s life changing. Not wearing a Nova jersey ever, but we're all assuming that Del's not just creating smoke. If it's real, you have to take it. May 1st can't come soon enough. I wore a Nova rowing shirt at regattas where my son competed (and a Duquesne one for my daughter) but always balanced it with a La Salle alumni hat.

Three points
If I averaged 10.5 points for a career and 13 in my last, I'd sure as hell grab the bag he got.
Not saying this because we lost him ... but he is going to struggle in the BE, where the guards are faster, stronger and more athletic. He won't be able to back guys down and finish at the hoop in the BE where folks play help defense and won't let that happen.
I don't see him
getting Nova to the tourney,
averaging double digits in scoring
being consistent in BE play ( he might have some good games but he will be inconsistent IMO)

Nova’s haul is gonna be a dude who went to La Salle, a dude who went to Penn and a dude who is a year removed from Temple. All players who are good but didn’t even get a look from Nova under Wright.

Khalif Battle is also visiting them today. But yeah, your right, Nova will never be what it was under Wright but it can't be get close to it either.

Maybe with his newly found wealth, Brickus could give a donation to La Salle or the collective as thanks for his free degree that prepared him to become a professional athlete at Villanova.

In all honesty, I was very much in favor of students being able to get paid for their efforts. It’s a billion industry made on their backs. I was also in favor of kids being able to transfer. After all, coaches leave for better opportunities all of the time.
But this is not what I thought would happen and this is not good for anyone. I was expecting: “Students get a percentage of the NCAA money and get a nice stipend for their efforts on top of the scholarship. You can transfer once freely without having to wait but a second time requires an appeal, and you can hire an agent (that the NCAA approves so you can find out your pro stock and also get paid for endorsements, but they cannot have any direct ties to boosters.”
I thought this would be along what they wanted because kinds should get paid, but at the same time there should be some semblance that education is also important to this. Because outside of about 20 kids a year, there aren’t one-and-done or two-and-done kids who are going to be set. It’s not like there are unlimited jobs playing overseas or the G-League. And career earnings are limited based on how long your career will be, and that is only a few years, and the international leagues aren’t paying anyone millions of dollars. And then transitioning back to a “normal” career after playing overseas for a while… you’re handicapped because now you don’t have the work experiences that translate unless you get into coaching.
A college education and degree is really important. I don’t think that needs to be said — being able to start a nest egg and having a degree is really beneficial. And someone bouncing between three colleges is not really taking that seriously, and it should be a component of college sports.
The NIL system sucks. How long until it comes out exactly how 21-year-old kids are getting scammed from all of this?
I don’t begrudge Jig one bit. He has a kid. I don’t know about his background but Coatesville is rough. These are the rules in place and he should benefit from them.
But this is just a Wild West and not good for anyone. I don’t even think it’s good for the big schools.

So where are all the players who are going to play for us this year? We only have 3 scholarships available. 2 if Brantley is coming back. I would really like to see Rokas come back. But our most important scholarship is who we bring in for the guard spot. Fran really needs to hit on that are we are not doing much next year. We desperately need good news there.

If La Salle adds back Brantley they project to be 127th (updating multiple times a day though) on Bartorvik for next year which would be just behind Temple. Still some moving parts but finally dust is starting to settle at Power Conference level. Nova is only 62. barttorvik.com/rostercast.php?team=La+Salle&year=2024

My man, NIL has proven beyond any argument that kids like Brickus were severely underpaid with their "free education". Shout into the wind.

Shout into the wind. I'm not arguing that. Your quip about donating back to your employer was apples to oranges. I'm assuming (unless you are in the army) that your employer does not provide you with room, board, and a college education. I was simply saying that now that he is getting paid as a professional on the main line (and probably making more to do so that 100% of his classmates graduating in May if Del is correct), maybe he could donate back to the school that provided him this foundation in a tax-free manner...like anyone who received a free education at La Salle might do (it's why I donate).

I’m interested to know more about these NIL donors contributing (paying?) thousands, or hundreds of thousands, of dollars each to fund middling basketball programs or to give upper level teams a one off shot at a tournament run.

If you generated revenue for La Salle to offset what you received, maybe this analogy works. Brickus gave more to the school than he got from the school and any implication that he owes is silly.

Not sure I understand or agree with this. Why do you think Brickus gave more to the school than what the school gave to Brickus? It is not like Brickus was a Jameer Nelson impact player for us. He will get his degree from La Salle and they made sure he had the support he needed to ensure he got his degree. Maybe I am missing something but that was the agreed upon commitment the two parties had.

Jon Rothstein @jonrothstein · 36s La Salle transfer Khalil Brantley tells me that he's currently on a visit to Washington State.
