If Nova wanted to break up the big 5, let them have the heat. Let them face the music from the local media, let them hear it from the fans, social media, etc... Nova still hasn't mended its fences from the Rolle days of breaking up the Big 5. Now that they're in a post Jay Wright era of basketball, expect NIT's to be a fixture on the main line. If Nova has the ability to dictate this thing after their worst season since your senior year in high school, this thing is fucked anyway. But no worries, a the Drexel Dragons can make all Big 5 teams. Again, how does any of this benefit La Salle? How does it benefit Philadelphia? What made the Big 5 different was the round robin. And what used to make it different was playing all the games at The Palestra. And the streamers, and the doubleheaders. That’s all been gone a long time. I’m not saying that’s a good thing, I’m saying it is what it is. This is better than nothing. And I think it’s a lot better that some of the other options. I just think you have to read between the lines a little bit and see that what happened was clearly not just a change for the sake of change, but a response to a lot of other factors.

You’re living in la la land. Both St Joe’s and La Salle have no appeal to Temple. The Holy War is a ticket seller for Nova. If you’re temple or nova, you have no upside of playing the A10 schools. Good enough to beat you. Not good enough for a win to matter. Joe, I'm the first to admit that I'm in a fantasy world at times. Tell me how this bastardized version of a big 5 classic is better than every team playing each other in a round robin format. You present a valid argument, and I'm all ears. I'm sorry, but playing drexel every year is not the same as playing Nova. Unless we are scheduling Nova as a stand alone game, we lose. Unless we are replacing temple and Nova with 2 high profile teams, we lose. We lose, and Penn loses. Philadelphia loses. The Delaware Valley loses. I'm not concerned about drexel. I guess they win. I like that there is (somehow) an outright champion as a result of the change. As others have mentioned, I don't know what the tiebreaker might entail but I think I'll much prefer Big 5 championship games vs. the shared titles of yester years. The weird thing about "third place" is that they could be 1-2 and be ranked above a fourth place 2-1 team (the loser in the finals) as well as a fifth place 1-2 team. Should the consolation rounds actually be for third and fifth place instead? otherwise, aren't we artificially inflating the importance of those games?

It makes sense that Villanova would want to play St. Joseph's of PA because it both gives them a local win and lets them avoid traveling into the city. the problem is, st joe's (pa)'s arena is part city. lol. <img src="//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/bbcode/video-preview.png" video="<iframe width="560" height="315" src=" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe>" alt="Video Preview">

What made the Big 5 different was the round robin. if these pods are permanent, after this coming season, i'm all for telling nova to stick it and have drexel replace them in the big 5 and keep the round robin. nova will probably still be good but the days of them contending for a national title are over. no need to bend over for them and st joe's (pa) with this new setup. st joe's (pa) will get their holy war so they can sell tickets and get a nice guarantee but that game stopped being a rivalry at least a decade ago. nova will keep them on the schedule because it's an easy win and no travel. i also have no desire to sit through an overpriced triple header at wells fargo, which is an awful place to see a college basketball game unless the building is sold out. they'll be lucky to get 10k fans that day.

The solution to many of the complaints here is that we have to get better. Finish first in our pod and we will get to play Villanova for the Big 5 title in front of large crowds at Wells Fargo. Go 'splorers

If you dispense of the notion that every team has a vote in this, it’s very easy to see why it has to happen. Nova holds most of the cards. Temple has a couple. That’s about it.

I don't think Temple is against playing the round robin. I think the Nova wants to cut down on their nonleague schedule. This was done purely to acquiesce to Nova. Jay Wright would've continued the round robin. With Jay gone, Nova flexed. Basically Penn, La Salle, and Temple bowed down. Get beyond La Salle vs. Nova...St. Joes vs Temple was a huge rivalry. That's now scrapped. Temple could potentially not play Nova every year. That's a hit. We lose a trip to the Palestra every other year. What I don't want this to become, what I fear it's going to become, is Temple vs. Nova most seasons. I have some questions for anybody that wants to jump in here. Can (more likely will) we schedule a Penn or a Nova outside of the Big 5 Classic? Is it feasible? Also, lets say that Diehard is correct and this thing draws 10K at the Wells Fargo Center...Split 7 ways, does it even make money? Does a half empty Wells Fargo Center in December cause this thing to flop? Lastly, if this thing flops, can we come back to the real Big 5? Or is this tournament going to take place for the next 7 years, give or take?

Temple has been mediocre. They’re in a bad conference. If they were actual at-large candidates YoY, the Big 5 schedule would be against their best wishes. In my opinion.

I see Penn taking a year or two off against La Salle until our 200+ NET is no longer a concern. We can still play Temple or St.Joe's at the Palestra.
Having a game where both teams have a stake in the championship is going to be exciting. Then the matchups for third and fifth place can fulfill some of the old rivalries that people want to see, which for example would include Drexel/St Joes or Penn, La Salle/Penn and St Joe's/Temple. The event will probably pull 4k in the early doubleheader then 7k to 9k in the nightcap unless they overprice it. Wonder if they can make it a package deal with a 5 game plan or something to try to sell more in advance that way, though most people may wait to see the timeslot before committing.

A few thoughts on all the whining/hand-wringing about some of the details. Are we 'losing' a yearly trip to the Palestra? We could host Drexel or Temple there. What if teams rotate pods? The year we get 'just' Drexel and Penn will be rough for the ratings stuff. Nova didn't flex their muscle, Mark Jackson (their AD) did. I've talked to him a few times, and it's always about the almighty dollar with him.

I appreciate this clarification, but I fully expect many fans to only want to go to at most 2 games. Probably it's the fifth place game that will suffer as a result. The only way you really want to see the fifth place game, the game played between two teams that haven't even won yet, is if your team is in it, right? Unless if everyone goes 1-1, the fifth place game could conceivably have a decent team in it.

The tiebreakers will be interesting.
* Overall record so far? This one seems most likely.
* Random? Literally just flip coins to determine the seeding?
* Point differential? That almost never comes into play, and it would introduce some unsportmanlike incentives (running up the score).
* Most years without a Big 5 championship?

What the heck do they do if all 3 teams from a pod finish 1-1, which is a distinct possibility this year.

Again, I see nothing wrong with the Round Robin. Unless Jay starts coaching on the main line again, the cats are coming back to pack. That smacked ass from Fordham can't coach his way out of a wet paper bag.

Tie breaker is best record in your pod plays best record in other pod for championship down to 6th place.
In the event there is a tie in record within you pod they will use the NCAA. net ranking to determine the higher seed.

Yet another reminder what a Coach means to a program and University….
