Weirdly, it sets up the possibility of us playing St. Joe's 4 times in a season. Twice in the A10 regular season, once in the Big 5 Triple-header, and once in the A10 tournament.

Excited for this tournament. The Villanova game has not been competitive for most of the last 20 years, with only about 4 exceptions. And at large is no longer much of a consideration as it was (barely) in 2013.
Nobody actually believed the press release by all of the schools denying these negotiations were happening. If anything, I assumed it could be a year further away, to only endure some kind of "last round robin series" sendoff.

Guessing we'll always be in the opposite pod as St. Joe's (of PA), as long as we're in the A-10 together. Question will be what happens if we end up in the same slot. Guessing it'll just be a 3rd game between us that year that doesn't count as an A-10 game.
This may be unpopular, but I think this is a pretty good step. It will inject some life into the Big 5, which has definitely stagnated even compared to 10 or 12 years ago. I attribute a lot of that to Villanova's dominance, but also Temple's descent, St. Joe's is currently in disarray, Penn is no longer perennially one of the top 2 Ivy League programs...and then there's us. Given that company, there's really no justification for keeping Drexel out.
I know a lot of people have fond memories of the Big 5 as it used to be, but most of that was 40+ years ago at this point. I wish we still played St. Joe's at the Palestra, but we know Villanova's not gonna play their games there. Nor will Temple. And with Jay Wright gone, I have a feeling this was the most Villanova was willing to commit to. The full round-robin was going away again, one way or another. Now at least we'll get a big event on a Saturday in early December,, which could be really cool.

I wish we still played St. Joe's at the Palestra this. dunph and lange need to make this happen. when la salle and st joe's (pa) started to play each other twice, dr g tried to get martooni to agree to play one game at the palestra and alternate who would get the home game. phil "mr big 5" martooni refused to do it. it's not like hagan or gola offers some ridiculous home court advantage, as evidenced in two of the three last seasons when the away team won both games. when the teams only faced each other once, the annual la salle-st joe's (pa) game at the palestra always sold out and the atmosphere was electric. need to get back to that.

I'm curious what the tiebreakers would be since you can end up in a scenario where all 3 teams in a pod are 1-1 against each other. I guess points scored followed by points against?

I like the new format. It gives us an early season tournament where each game has meaning. It creates some excitement for the fans as we compete within our pod and then ends with a tripleheader at Wells Fargo. I think this was the best we were going to get and with the loss of interest in the round robin this may recreate some excitement in the Big Five.

I think this was the best we were going to get and with the loss of interest in the round robin this may recreate some excitement in the Big Five. This is exactly where I am. If the options were this, or keep the round-robin with Drexel replacing Villanova, the round robin going away entirely, or going back to just the '90's style of everyone playing 2 games, this is a much more preferable deal.

Ironically Michigan is trying to schedule a game with Penn St at the Palestra this season for Martelli. Martelli plans to retire at year end.
I don't like that the Big 5 Classic is on College Football Championship Saturday, but I wonder what time the event is going to start and how steep the prices are going to be.

That's the exact reason why I like it, but that's just for my personal convenience. I was worried it might be on Army-Navy weekend, since Philly only has the A-N game once the next 5 years.

Curious to see what La Salle does to get students to this or what the student turnout will be from other schools. The Big 5 game versus Temple at the Palestra a few years back was packed and had tons of students, but ESPN was broadcasting GameDay from there and our students showed up. By contrast, the double header at the Palestra this year was poorly attended in general and very few students attended. I'd imagine that 2 of the 3 double header games will also be sparsely attended and not seem super exciting in a 4/5 empty 21,000-person arena.

I don't like the fact that we lost the highest profile opponent on our schedule, year in and year out. That's not a good thing.

Aside from nostalgia, what is the appeal of a triple header with 6 teams who didn't make the NCAA tournament in the prior year?

The Big 5 Classic was played from the fall of like 02 to 05. It featured 3 Saturday games between the City 6 teams. Package this shit up in whatever fancy bow you'd like, but we're either losing a regular season game with Temple or Nova. Unless we'd schedule a separate nonleague game with either school (possible with Temple but probably not with Nova), we are losing out in this bullshit. Call it what it is. It's bullshit. It's the break up of the Big 5 without Rolle. Blame it on the covid year when we didn't play it, blame it on a bullshit Wednesday night double header in a city where car jackings and shootings are out of control, blame it on Kyle Neptune, but this Big 5 Classic screws every team but Nova.
We could possibly lose Temple and Nova in certain years, and that's 2 low travel budget, highly attended games. It's something new, but it's bullshit. We'll play Fairfield and Manhattan instead.

Every team but Nova should have voted against it. We have a rival school 10 minutes down Broad St, and we aren't playing them annually? Make it make sense.

I could be wrong, but the Big 5 is probably pretty unique in terms of annually scheduled non-conference games, right? I imagine most(?) schools don't have someone similar that's always on their schedule?

take a look at this article from jensen. am i reading it correctly, that st joe's (pa) is guaranteed to be in villanova's pod every year, meaning they play them every year, whereas la salle, temple and drexel could conceivable not play them for many years? who frickin' agreed to that and why does the worst program in the city over the last 4 years get that kind of preferential treatment. www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/thoughts-on-the-new-structure-of-the-big-5-tournament/ar-AA19JStJplease tell me i'm confused and did not grasp the info in this article.

The holy war game draws very well. While it’s being suggested it was an SJU stipulation it makes a lot of sense both Villanova and SJU were both be on the same page there. There are definitely going to be situations where a school doesn’t play the other in x amount of seasons but I’m sure when considering future pods they’ll keep that in mind.

I read it as you did. I think these are permanent pods and unless we win our group and Villanova wins theirs, we won't be playing them ever at their place or The Gola.

Just a hypothetical here though. If you were Villanova, wouldn’t you refuse to come to Gola?
If these are permanent it also means we won’t be going to the Palestra, so they better figure out a way to get some games there, SJUPA or otherwise.

It makes sense that Villanova would want to play St. Joseph's of PA because it both gives them a local win and lets them avoid traveling into the city.

Both St Joe’s and La Salle have no appeal to Temple. The Holy War is a ticket seller for Nova. If you’re temple or nova, you have no upside of playing the A10 schools. Good enough to beat you. Not good enough for a win to matter.

This is probably true but Temple is going through a personality crisis right now along with a bunch of other issues and is better off getting back to their roots instead of trying to build temporary rivalries with ECU, Tulane, etc.. The last few years haven’t been kind to the Big 5 but it possibly could be more of an outlier then the norm.

Tell me how this bastardized version of a big 5 classic is better than every team playing each other in a round robin format. You present a valid argument, and I'm all ears. I'm sorry, but playing drexel every year is not the same as playing Nova. Unless we are scheduling Nova as a stand alone game, we lose. Unless we are replacing temple and Nova with 2 high profile teams, we lose. We lose, and Penn loses. Philadelphia loses. The Delaware Valley loses. I'm not concerned about drexel. I guess they win.

I’m sure La Salle and probably St. Joe’s and Penn (maybe even Temple?) would’ve been fine continuing the round Robin. I’m pretty positive Villanova wasn’t. And they’re in charge now. Just the way it is. This is better then nothing.

If Nova wanted to break up the big 5, let them have the heat. Let them face the music from the local media, let them hear it from the fans, social media, etc...
Nova still hasn't mended its fences from the Rolle days of breaking up the Big 5. Now that they're in a post Jay Wright era of basketball, expect NIT's to be a fixture on the main line. If Nova has the ability to dictate this thing after their worst season since your senior year in high school, this thing is fucked anyway. But no worries, a the Drexel Dragons can make all Big 5 teams.
Again, how does any of this benefit La Salle? How does it benefit Philadelphia? What made the Big 5 different was the round robin.
