By and large, I think Chaney did things right. He took care of his players and ran a clean program. He was a smart coach and really knew how to coach defense although his offensive strategies were left wanting most times. The incident with St. Joe's was the big blemish on an otherwise spotless career. I'm okay with the Calipari incident. Calipari was and is sleazy in my opinion. what about choking Stanford's coach and GW's coach...my how times have changed.

Unfortunately, that's what they are remembered most by. Woody Hayes punching the Clemson player, Cal and Chaney, Knight throwing the chair, and Speedy ripping his pants.

John Chaney DIRECT was a victim of American Apartheid!
He was one of the best players in America and he was explicitly denied an opportunity to play college basketball in Philadelphia because he was a Black man.
He had to travel to the deep South to play at Bethune-Cookman where he scored over 2,000 points.
He wasn't given an opportunity to coach at the D1 level until he was in his 50s...
I'm amazed that he did threaten to choke hundreds of people...
They certainly tried to choke him and his opportunities...

I'm with Del on this one. Chaney was victimized by the system so having a chip on his shoulder isn't shocking. Had a couple bad moments in his career but what are the chances that had he had hookers meet up with recruits that he would ever get another coaching job. He helped a lot of kids in his career from Cheyney to Temple. In my opinion the pros far outweigh the cons.

John Chaney is a good man. Despite some bad decisions it is not who he is as a man. We all make bad decisions but he helped a lot of people in his life which is a mark of a good man. He helped La Salle that is for sure.
Del is right. He had a lot to be bitter about but he did not let that deter him.

The last 3 posts in this thread (phillyhoops4life, las71 and explorer88) are pretty much spot on. I think John Chaney was a great coach and an even better man. He was a big influence on a lot of young men, he did things the right way and he wasn't afraid to stand up to be counted when he felt something was wrong. I didn't always agree with him or like some of the things he said, but I don't think there's many coaches that were better than him on so many different levels. It's not always about who had the best W-L record, it's more about what you accomplished as a person. John Chaney accomplished a lot.

I’d be interested in these transfers rated above Ed on the top 20 sit a year transfer list.
Koval can hit threes and share time with Moore in his last season. Izay would compliment as an inside banger and there are many teams in A10 that go 2 starters and three rotation bigs that we’d need to counter.
Brewer is that missing piece we have needed for a long time. He could slip right in after Spencer graduates.
13. Hayden Koval, 7-foot, 220 pounds, C, sophomore, Central Arkansas Koval should get high-major interest due to his size, shot-blocking ability and touch away from the basket. He averaged 12.2 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.1 blocks and made 31 3-pointers.
14. Ty Brewer, 6-foot-7, 210 pounds, F, sophomore, SE Louisiana Brewer had a number of big-time performances early in the season, including 30 points and six boards against Ole Miss and 26 points and 12 rebounds against Vanderbilt. He averaged 14.9 points and 7.7 boards.

Ash is doing some hard work signing and keeping players that will produce for us. We have a lot of guys who can contribute and the lineup is a far cry from the days of Speedy, where he played a short bench and didn’t use all of his ‘ships. Unfortunately, there is more good talent, more parity and greater resources at the P5+BE schools.
I hope we play a full season And look forward to how this group can compete and win. Will be interesting for sure.

More importantly (since we have ZERO shot at Duren) is that Jhamir Brickus was also named to the first team of the Class 6A all-state basketball team. Congratulations to Jhamir!

(since we have ZERO shot at Duren) Hey Jalen, do you want to drop 35 a game for one year in the A10? You do?

Toppin going top 5 and some kid wanting to stay close to home is going to work out huge for some mid-major in the next year or two.

Toppin going top 5 and some kid wanting to stay close to home is going to work out huge for some mid-major in the next year or two. I agree and why not us. comparing duren's and toppin's situations is laughable. duren was a 5 star recruit from the time he arrived at roman. he was a top 10 player in his class as a freshman and is now the #2 player going into his junior year. toppin had no offers as a 6'5" forward coming out of a small hs in upstate new york, so he prepped at mt zion. his fall offers were low-mid major until the spring when illinois, mississippi state and a handful of a10 schools offered after he grew to 6'8" and had a solid prep year. even then, he wasn't considered a high profile recruit. so far, not one phila area college has offered duren, not even villanova who is the only local school with even a chance at him. he isn't even a philly kid (he's from new castle, de). if he wanted to stay local for college, he would have just stayed at roman instead of transferring to monteverde for more exposure. he's going to either go pro or end up at the p5 school of his choice.

I think the appeal of going to a basketball-first high school to play with some of the best players in the country is the reason for moteverde.

It’s not like we are up against big time programs( recruiting)- Depends on 2 things: (1) La Salle’s level of interest (2) Does he want to stay home( Philly)?
