If this is just about getting a piece of the money pie, than make them all employees, a spinoff of old State U - Commercial Division-For Profit. Cut out the academic admittance / eligibility charade. Create in essence an apprentice pro league. BTW, plenty of people have done the work and school thing at the same time. Otherwise, watch how the cost of tickets/tuition/fees will now go up to fund this new status.

It's "walking around money" in the same way my salary beyond mortgage and utilities is "walking around money".

O'Bannon was paid with free tuition, room and board. He also had access to tutors and academic advisors. If you start paying college players does the NBA cease to exist? Extend college to 6 years of eligibility? O'Bannon accepted the free tuition, academic advice, housing and food... case closed. Go write a book or open a business if you want additional income. Bingo. And a lot (not all) came in thru the back door via points per game, TD's scored, passing records, etc. If you argue for % cut, you're arguing you're an employee. If that's what they want, make them employees, the student body has no real connection to full ride athletes.

If they get paid then they are also subject to paying taxes including local city wage taxes in the big cities.

Sounds pretty socialist, dude. Do you just give them a check for $65k per year and let them pay for everything including tuition and food and housing? Why bother making them go to class, they could just take online courses and never set foot on-campus except for the basketball practices and games.
This is standard procedure at the BIG programs...

How would SJU handle this? They have one foot in the suburbs and one foot in the city? (Kind of like the hokey pokey...put left foot in, put your left foot out, put your left foot in and you shake it all about...……). Let me ponder.

Well you knew that was coming.....one of the more pressing issues to vote on in California, I guess.

You can't allow California colleges to compete with schools who don't have the same parameters. New York is next.

You can't allow California colleges to compete with schools who don't have the same parameters. New York is next. No they won't be. New York is always frustratingly behind the curve on these things. They'll wait for 6 or 7 other states to go next, then they'll hop on. There's absolutely no reason players shouldn't be allowed to profit off their own likenesses, which is what that law allows for. That the NCAA ends up in a precarious spot here is a problem for the NCAA, which they entirely deserve for attempting to keep a status quo in place that puts all the money in their own pockets, and none in the players. If they'd been a little more forward-thinking a few decades ago, they could be avoiding a lot of these issues right now, while still being able to keep an insane amount of money for themselves.
