This was a completely sincere question. My first in a while, but still ... Whomever approved the design. Bob Mullen?

I’m lost. I suck for asking a question that you’re not sure of the answer either?

I am not saying you have to be an investigative journalist. Just maybe not print every rumor without checking if the perceived implications are actually there. As I said, it is fairly common to build "if then" scenarios for any move, up down or laterally. Just because D3 was mentioned doesn't mean it was "recommended" nor "on the table." That would be jumping to conclusions.

Brother Burke's last year as President was 1976. The gym did not open until 1998. Joe Burke was acting President at the time of the renovation. Hideous decision for the school but not unusual for the school at that time. We made no effort to capitalize on Lionel’s years. When you consider Louth’s story of what could have been and what actually happened you just want to cry as a La Salle basketball fan.

Xavier is an example of a small catholic school that had a plan to promote their school through Basketball success. Before everyone chimes in on the Cintas center and how it was donated.... that would never had happened if Xavier was not fully committed and already becoming a good program. LaSalle needs to model itself after a small catholic school that has been having success. I know there are not a ton of them but we need a solid plan.

And Gonzaga. Their situation somewhat mirrors some things happening with us: “The school was in real trouble" was the assessment of longtime benefactor Jack McCann in 1998.
Asked to join the board of trustees that year, the Gonzaga graduate discovered his alma mater was falling apart, operating at a deficit for several years, the school’s credit rating plummeting, the endowment slipping and administrators forced to slash budgets simply to pay the bills.
The small, Catholic, private and enrollment-reliant school welcomed a bottoming-out freshman class of 550 students, continuing a dismal trend of shrinking enrollment that saw the school’s undergraduate population dip from 4,176 in 1990 to 2,791 just eight years later.
Staring at a $1 million deficit -- no small sum for a school of its size -- university administrators eliminated 30 positions and laid off five more employees. There was even talk of reducing the basketball staff, the board discussing eliminating one full-time position that would have cost Bill Grier his job. A small group of faculty went so far as to suggest the university consider abandoning Division I athletics altogether.www.espn.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/119205/how-the-basketball-program-helped-gonzaga-university-flourish

Now I’m a little curious if flipside cautionary tales exist where a team invested in the infrastructure and say negative returns. If not ...

Is the WCC really that much different than the A-10? I guess they're smaller on whole if you ignore BYU, but otherwise it seems like a best-of-the-rest kinda deal.

Outside of BYU they're all under 10k students. Outside of BYU and Pepperdine they all have endowments that are realistic.

I always wondered what it would be like for a Catholic to attend BYU. I have to think that it's much different than a non Catholic attending La Salle.
Getting back to the subject at hand though, BYU has to be the largest private school in the country no?

If the moderators feel the need to keep up this baseless thread, could I ask that the moderators at least change the name of the thread. It is leading to as much spreading of false rumors as the original post. La Salle is in no way considering a move to d3. When someone asks your feeling or view towards something in a focus group, they are looking for how strong views are in certain directions. That's how focus groups work. It doesn't mean that all alternatives are on the table. La Salle is not considering going d3.

I'm absolutely fine if we end up in the MAAC. I'd rather be in the A-10. We'd be the biggest dog in that yard.
I really don't see the A-10 being a 3+ bid league anymore. The big boys have found out how to game the system. URI is the only at-large this year in case they trip up. What's the point in staying in the A-10 if it's a one-bid league? There are pretty much zero mid-major at-large teams this year, unless you count the AAC as a mid-major. None of the A-10 teams are a draw or anything. We'll always play St. Joe's. Is there any point in the A-10 if the A-10 isn't a multi-bid league? Does playing URI or VCU really matter to anyone outside of the 20 active posters on this board?
Also, the MAAC every few years pops a team that can do some damage in March. Monmouth really should have gotten an at-large two years ago and if they made the dance last year would have been great. Siena and Manhattan and Iona have also done some work. We'd be the biggest dog in that yard (in all sports).

Umm, hold on. Before the "A10 is a one bid league" to be in effect a trend, I really need more than 11 regular season games to call that what it is. Give Dayton or George Washington or VCU a few months and any of them could very well be competitive enough again to fill the void. All three have had coaching changes in the last two years, and are rebuilding.
As for biggest dog in the yard comment, is that based on facility or enrollment or endowment or what measuring stick? Towson Tigers: 22,284 enrolled vs 3,652, similar endowment, 5,200 vs 3,400 arena

I'm absolutely not fine with a move to a small time conference. I am shocked that some on here are willing to swallow that bitter pill and confirm the worst sentiments of the fans of other Big 5 schools. Does anyone else find it beyond depressing that 5 years removed from the Southwest Philly Floater there is serious discussions about this? Jesus Christ, at least try and bail out before abandoning ship. Being a fan of this team is like watching a self destructive family member fumble over and over again when they have the tools to better themselves.

Towson Tigers: 22,284 enrolled vs 3,652, similar endowment, 5,200 vs 3,400 arena Towson's CAA. All of the MAAC schools are small, private schools and mostly Catholic. The biggest school is Quinnipiac w/ 9,000. Everyone else has a student body with a population really close to ours. The smallest is Siena or St. Peter's. The biggest MAAC arena, I believe, is technically Siena who play at Albany's big arena. (And they actually are a good draw there.) The only teams that have "new" arenas and Monmouth and Quinnipiac. Monmouth had two good years after their arena was built, but that was based largely on getting a really good player in Justin Robinson who fell through the cracks. They're back down to earth this year. Quinnipiac has gotten a much better ROI on their arena because their hockey team is awesome and made it to the NCAA finals. I am not sold that building a new arena will provide us with any long-term benefit for the resources it will take to construct. Did St. Joe's change at all because of Hagan? Not really. Does a new arena guarantee us a top half A-10 finish on a regular basis? No. It helps. I'm sure we lost recruits over the years to kids who like the bells and whistles of a modern arena. But we're not going to get Top 100 recruits regularly because we'll have a few box seats. I don't think it's waving the white flag. Maybe the A-10 as a one or two-bid league trend doesn't happen. It was a one-bid league a while ago when George Washington was ruling the roost. It was a five-bid league the year we made the Sweet 16.

La Salle's first move needs to be a change at Coaching Position. Let's see if some one new can come here and jump start our program with our facility limitations. If that doesn't work. The university's next step should be moving down to a conference like the MAAC. Where hopefully we build a conference dominance amongst schools more similar to us.

La Salle's next move is to fight like hell to improve their current league affiliation and athletic program. Do it til you drop. Tell me ONE program that got better by dropping down? Look at Holy Cross. They are irrelevant and at one time was a great MBB and Athletic program. The MAAC has what kind of television package? Friday night on ESPN. Lucky you get two appearances a year. I have been told that as a league the MAAC is not held in highest academic regard. The loss of revenue alone is reason to pass on that league. No one will pay the ticket prices to go from A10 opponents to MAAC opponents. Forget the Patriot League, they don't want us because we are not a fit with their mission. CAA is interesting but a step between the A10 and MAAC. Plus I am told they are not interested in expansion. La Salle is in the best league for them. What they need to do is put a full court press to improve their situation. If that means we all increase our contributions or buy tickets (even if you can't make all the games) than that's what we do. If we have to drop a sport or two, we take the PR hit and move on. We things get tough the tough get going. Quit and run is a bad tactic.
