I'm not gonna lie, I probably laugh at that joke if told out loud in private. But something about seeing it typed out, made it seem a little bit off base. Hopefully this is Phil's post-game reaction:

Is this any different than when LSCHS refused to play the prep on thanksgiving because it would require the PCL playoffs game to be a third meeting?
Ever since that season LSCHS has been the better team but the annual tradition is gone for good. They blamed realignment but the prep was going to play even though they had everything to lose. The real reason LS quit was because they were afraid of a two game losing streak and what it would do to their overall dominance in the series.

LSCHS has the best High School Sports Program in the area, hands down. There is no debate. If they elect not to play a game that's fine.
We're not afraid of anybody in any sport.

My memories of the 2006 cancellation are still a bit jaded. The press release says the two programs actually collaborated on that decision to play the championship game on Black Friday, rather than playing three times in one month and twice in two weeks. Circumstances of the realignment were in fact mostly to blame for the ending of the tradition. La Salle has had only one Thanksgiving day game after that, and been involved in many PIAA runs instead. The analogy I still do see is that there were coaches pledging to preserve traditions despite any potential schedule disruptions, then doing the exact opposite when backed into a corner by the scheduling decisions.

There are no schedule disruptions and no one is being backed into any corners. No one had to fit three games into one month or play twice in two weeks. One game can be played in early-mid January and the other can be played in late Feb-early March. Penn would gladly rent the Palestra for two La Salle-St Joe's games instead of one. This is all about Martelli not wanting to get swept which would send him and the St Joe's fanbase over the edge.

On the plus side, it becomes another winnable road game for our crew. Road wins are big come selection time as we learned in 2013.
Just imagine if we beat them 2 times this year and one happens to be in their gym.

Not sure if anyone saw this or not but according to Aaron Brady, sju (pa) home game against lasalle still a possibility to be played at the palestra. I'm sure odds not good but nice to see there may be discussions still happening to make this a reality.

These prep/college high comparisons to DI athletics are so silly.

Not a surprising response from a prepper. It wasn't LCHS that cancelled the game. It was the Prep - afraid of losing 3 straight to LCHS. You misremembered. The PREP won both games in that season, though rarely since. A better comeback you could have used was that La Salle is unavailable to play these Turkey games because they are usually out vying for the state championship. I just miss the Thanksgiving day rivalry because it was at the University and because everybody went, and I got to see all my friends on both sides. La Salle has moved on. Anyway, the point is that Martelli doesn't want to play at the Palestra anymore because his team can't compete there, and it totally contradicts his earlier statements about tradition. LSCHS seemingly lost interest in a perfect Thanksgiving day rivalry right about the time that they had stopped winning it every year. That was my analogy, I don't mean anything else by it.

Late summer boredom, hence a hypothetical game matchup between SJU (of Pa) “Undefeated Season” vs our Sweet Sixteen squad? Neutral location = Palestra. Thoughts?

Them. Nelson would be the best player on the court and West/Carroll would cause major matchup issues.

There's a reason why they went "undefeated" and we squeaked into the tourney.

Yeah, you gotta be fair. It's not close. Yup... I went to every home game at SJU that year and close road games in R.I. and Berkely California... Nelson and West are bona fide NBA guards... They just played a VERY HIGH level of basketball... made every correct pass and made every big shot... except the buzzer beater against Oklahoma St... Too much for the LaSalle squad, but an interesting matchup nonetheless...

We'd cover but the spread would be 12 or so. They were a fantastic team. On top of the two lead guards, they also had Pat Carroll and The Eraser.

Joey'e would beat last season's team but lose to L-Train team with Overton and Woods. Woods would give Nelson a fight and nobody could handle Simmons. Overton and West are a wash and Hurd would have a slight advantage over Carrol who could shoot very good but not much else. Center position goes to Joey's by a slight margin because of shot blocking ability. Two NBA players (Nelson/West) versus Three NBA players (Simmons/Overton/Woods in same Big Five game would have been great if only it could have been. Best teams were in 69 between Nova and Explorer's with I believe 6 future NBA/ABA players on floor at same time.

But I'll take West/Nelson over Overton/Woods That game would be a push...

People forget how good Doug was before devastating ankle injury in his senior season. He was nearly leading the country in scoring and was a sure-fire first round pick until that happened. 90 la salle wipes the floor with 04 st. Joe's. there was just a lot more talent in the college game back then before the mass early entries. And in 2004 kids weren't even forced to play for the 1 season (lebron would have been a freshman). One thing that would hurt la salle in that matchup was that jack Hurd really struggled with his shot in 1990.

90 la salle wipes the floor with 04 st. Joe's.... Wow... 03 SJU had to endure West playing on bum ankle at the end or they would have been a lot stronger in the tourney... 01 SJU gave Stanford a LOT of problems in the Tourney... Hard for me to see Jameer and West getting "wiped" in any college game... ...and I saw every game they played between NY and DC...LaSalle was good but so was SJU.....

Gotta appreciate the homer outlook, but some ya'll are boozing like the Williams twins are still on the roster if you think St Joes would get romped.

Can't comment on the '90 team, since I was too young to remember. But by all accounts they were pretty dominant and that could be a legitimate contest. Not sure why we would bring up last year's team in the conversation. They were great and will always be one of my favorite La Salle teams no matter how good the program might get, but they could not beat '04 Hawks. Wish I could say otherwise.

Backcourts basically a wash, with maybe slight edge to SJU at best. Lionel was far too much for anyone in that frontcourt to handle, though. Like I said, college hoops was full of better players at the time. If you dropped the 1990 La Salle team in the 2004 NCAA Tournament, I think they beat everyone with the exception of UConn, simply because of that UConn size (Okafor, Boone, Villanueva, etc.). Unlike 2004 St. Joe's, La Salle never suffered a decisive loss. I'm not old enough to remember 1969 La Salle, but I'm old enough to remember 1990 La Salle and 2004 SJU very well. In my life, I would rank 2004 St. Joe's behind 1990 La Salle, 1988 Temple and the Nova teams in 2005 and 2006 when they had a healthy Sumpter (you could argue they win 2 national titles in a row if he doesn't get hurt in 2005 tournament. They beat eventual champ UNC in 2005 Sweet 16 without him only to have that travel called...and then really missed his size in 2006 loss to eventual champ Florida, when they couldn't hit a 3---this coming from someone that hates Nova). The Brunson/McKie/Jones Temple teams were good, but weren't quite balanced enough in the frontcourt (like SJU). Then when they had the frontcourt (Lyde/Barnes) Brokenborough, Sanchez and Karcher couldn't make a shot to save their lives.

Jameer may be the best out of the two sets of guards, but not by much. People forget just how good Randy was. He is one of the toughest kids to ever wear a La Salle uniform. Think about this. As a senior, he led the Big 5 in scoring (27.2 ppg) and assists (5.2 apg) and also found the time to average 6.3 rebounds and 2.4 steals. And he may have been 5'10" if he was lucky. Those are astounding numbers. I think Randy would have given West fits. And even though Jack Hurd struggled shooting the ball in 1990, he would have shut Carroll down. Jack was another kid who was tough as nails. The only place I give the 2004 Hawks the edge is in the post, and even that wasn't by all that much.

I wouldn't say La Salle beats Joe's bad but they are the better team and don't forget they had if I remember correctly (which I probably don't) Bobby Johnson and Bron Holland on the bench. West and Nelson never hed to face a duo of Overton and Woods in their perfect season although I would give them a slight advantage by a very small margin. Hurd was a stronger player than Carroll with Carroll being the better shooter.

Broderick the 69 team was the best Big 5 team ever, period. 4 NBA/ABA players in starting five with Dunphy and 6-7 (can't remember spelling - Polish name) back-up off bench. Team ended up 23 or 24-1 with only loss being I think 81-80 to S. Carolina in early season tourny. I know Nova won 86 tourny but simply was not as good as 69ers.

Yes, the only loss was to South Carolina in the Quaker City Christmas Tournament at the Spectrum. SC slowed down the game to neutralize our speed. Their PG was John Roche who went to the NBA where I believe he had a solid career. One of La Salle's key rotation guys was Ed (I won't spell it correctly but phonetically it was shes-nee) Schnezy. Incidentally, although the 1969 team was inelligible because probabtion for post-season play, they were ranked # 2 nationally behing UCLA led by Lew Alcindor, nee Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

I like where this thread has gone. While we are on hypothetical rematches, I would place my bank account on the all time La Salle team taking down the all time SJU team, but who would play? I'm no SJU historian but maybe someone could help complete that roster.
Lasalle: Giannini (coach) Gola (player / coach) Brooks Simmons Butler Legler Woods / Galloway / Durrett / Overton
vs.
Martelli (coach) Nelson West Cliff Anderson Mike Bantom Guokas G Senesky Pat Carrol

Love this topic, but I think it's tough to put Ramon on that all-time roster with only two seasons at La Salle. That's a discussion to have in a handful of years, to see if he carved himself a professional career here in the states.
