Wow, just heard that. First thought is Butler might beat the Celtics this season with all the personnel moves. Second thought was Butler Nation probably jumping off the nearest bridge. Move to the new Big East and they lose the main reason for recruits picking Butler. Sorry but the next guy will have a tough time following Stevens.
Will this be another Pitino like situation? The NBA is a player's league. I thought Stevens was biding his time til the Indiana U job became available. Now he'll get megabucks but will he be happy...or successful.

Stop it hoops.
No more G is being considered talk.
Butler will elevate an assistant I would think.

There is nothing money can't ruin because people are never satisfied with what they have no matter how much they have. There are very few who don't let money run everything and the first person I can think of from way back was Paterno and the pro job he turned down in 1971 who actually turned down more money for what he loved which was Penn State. About 100% go for the money even when they are set for life with what they are currently doing because 'greed is good'. Whoever created that quote is the most ignorant human being that ever walked the planet.

1) Butler's going to hire from within. It's what they always do. It makes doubly sense this team of year, too.
2) It's completely insane to think that the coach of the 5th place team in the A-10 is now coaching one of the most legendary teams in sports history.
3) Here's a great what-if: What if that ref doesn't call that dubious 90-foot whistle for Butler against Pitt the second year they made the championship? They lose that game. Butler certainly has enough juice to get to the A-10 but are they a Big East team?
4) La Salle finished fourth. We beat Butler. We went further in the tournament than them. The Sixers job is open. DO THE MATH!

Man, Butler fans are kinda crappy. There's a lot of attacking on Brad because he left two days after they made the Big East move official, they'll suffer in recruiting, etc.
Uhm, guys, he made your program a national powerhouse.

The Pitino / Celtics disaster was one of the first things I thought about when I heard the news about Brad Stevens. Something tells me that Stevens is a little more grounded than Pitino. I think the Celtics actually gave Pitino the position of GM and named him the President of the organization. What a train wreck. Stevens will be interesting. The Sixers are still fiddling.....

Unbelievable news. Deserves its own thread. I think Stevens knows Butler is going to struggle in the Big East. This may have been the time to leave a great program he built. I updated the bracket with this news: www.explorertownbracketologist.com

Holy hell. Just caught wind of this. Big loss for both Butler and college basketball. This would put Shaka in line for all the top jobs now, with Stevens gone.
Butler fans are going ballistic and lining up on the nearest bridge. Going to be rough transition.

Horrible timing for Butler too. Almost everyone has found a coaching home by this point. And while they usually hire from within, the heir apparent Matt Graves left for Southern Alabama's head gig earlier this season. From twitter, Graves already ruled out a return for the higher profile job at Butker.

I was 4 when this happened, but this reminds me of Bill Parcells when he left the Giants in '91. It wasn't so much THAT he left, it was that he waited until May to do it, by which time Bill Belichick and Tom Coughlin had gone elsewhere, and they were left scrambling to find someone at that late hour.
They ended up with Ray Handley.

Stop it hoops. No more G is being considered talk. Butler will elevate an assistant I would think. Sorry, I couldn't resist the temptation, plus it was a way for the thread to have some direct relevance to la Salle hoops Stevens probably made the reasonable assumption he could take the gig - make more money than he ever could imagine, get fired from the NBA and then get the next big time offer from a college gig and be in a great place. I mean, it's the highest level in the sport, you have to take the chance when it comes up. Good for him, I hope he's the next Greg popovich or Larry brown

I also read that tweet saying Stevens' top assistant had stated for years under the impression if he ever left the Butler job was his. After Stevens kept turning jobs down he finally took a head job this offseason and then Stevens leaves. He's gotta feel a little like Charlie Brown kicking the football right now

Anyone furious with Stevens is simply admitting how valuable Stevens is. I hate the Celtics and still hope he does well.

Almost unanimously, the Butler fans aren't mad. They're just heartbroken. Many of them are saying that they'd follow him to the end of the earth, even today. But I think the best word is confusion or shock - he kept saying all the right things, only to flop on his word today out of the blue.
I think many people expected him to wait on one of the Blue Blood teams (myself included), not the NBA, and not exactly this season. He's just too well respected for anyone to really slam.

NBA TV says Stevens deal is $22 Million for 6 years. Not bad for a guy from a non BCS conference. Shaka next?

My favorite Butler post was from someone who said that Stevens must have looked at the Big East and figured they couldn't compete and that's why he left. You have to love some fans basically calling the coach a coward. Some others devastated because the most important time for recruiting is upon them and now they have no coach.
Is it me but $22 million for 6 years doesn't seem like a big bump? I suspect that might be max salary at Butler however. I also think his deal is half per year of what Doc Rivers made...not that that matters.
Happy 4th to everyone.

The sky is falling, the sky is falling. Butler will be fine and Stephens just liked money more than Butler. People move on all the time and things are fine and this will be no different except that Stephens better like losing because he will get plenty of that with what he has inherited at Boston. Only question for Butler is if any commits back out which could hurt them in the short term (1-2 years).

Don't underestimate the grind of recruiting. College basketball recruiting seems like it is absolutely terrible.

It is 900 unless you can afford to pay players like some of the big schools. Did I say that they would never do something illegal to get an advantage certainly not in college sports. BARF

Yep. Brandon Miller promoted to head honcho. Smart move doing it in just a few days, limiting the question mark from impacting the team as much as possible. Link Here.

It's crazy that are really people trashing Stevens for being 'greedy.' The man is probably now set for life, and his kids for theirs too. I'm sure he was making at Butler was quite generous, but $22 million is $22 million.
And if he's a total flop in Boston, he can go right back to a top college job, just like calipari or pitino, and he maybe even ends up back at Butler someday. One thing he said at the news conference is that now he can continue wearing his Butler gear. It explains why he took a pro job instead of a higher-paying college job.

Hawkisdead guy was already set for life making million plus each season for what the past two or three years plus more in the future at Butler. Repeat after me GREED IS GOOD and you know that is true just look at the good ole USA only 16 plus trillion dollars in debt with no fix in sight because it is way to late in the game to correct.

Question how did Bryce the asshole harper make the all shit team with 24 rbi's. Last season hardon made snookie of the year with stats that D.Brown has already passed. Harper's stats were the poorest rookie of the year stats in memory. Has hardon been sleeping with the commissioner wife. Absolute disgrace to the players who deserved it. Hope the son of a bitch runs into another F.... wall
