I know it's far off but there's two big state school jobs out there that G's name has been tied with in Rutgers and Minnesota. I think both are long shots for him to bounce but if it happens, who are we going to look at?
Is anyone on the current staff a good replacement?
For non-staff people, I would think:
1) Jeff Neubauer. A blast from the past who has done a very admirable job at Eastern Kentucky. He's made the NCAA tournament at a place that I can't imagine is an easy sell.
2) Doug Overton. He has some coaching experience. Speedy's back in the fold now and Lionel was at all the tournament games. It would be a really good PR hire.
3) The Lehigh/Bucknell coaches. If any of those guys want a bump up from the non-scholarship Patriot League to the A-10. Both nailed some really quality recruits, obviously, and put together some very good teams.
4) Andy Toole. There would need to be some serious vetting since he was a Rice protege but Robert Morris is a good little program.
5) Matt Brady. A St. Joe's guy who got JMU into the dance this year. The CAA is a dead man walking conference now that George Mason's in the A-10.
Anyone else?

Hell no to Brady. He's a climber. Screwed Marist big time to jump to JMU, they ended up having to sue him. He'd be trying to string 2 good seasons together so he could jump as soon as possible.

Ah yes, I forgot about the Marist lawsuit. That's toxic.

G is not a candidate for Minnesota.
I cannot think about potential coaches while G is our coach. I don't want another coach.
La Salle needs to do whatever it possibly can to retain him. He is the perfect fit for what La Salle needs.
I really hate this type of banter. I know it comes with the territory but man we can't even savior our season without the speculation.

"If G goes," we'll deal with it then. This thread is an abomination unto BasketBa'al.

This is one reason I jokingly said after the last game that I wish we could shut down the board till October. I'd rather talk about potential replacements for Brennan, but that is just as touchy a subject.

Look, I want G to stay just as much as everyone else does. But this is the reality we're facing. No doubt Brennan and Bro. Mike are already thinking like this in case they can't match what Rutgers might offer.

Reality is something that exists outside your head and the heads of bloggers who opine on which coaches schools "should" or "might" considered for various jobs. No one has reported that any school has contacted G, much less offered him a job, and he said last week that there had been no such contact. This is just pointlessly negative speculation during what should be a happy time.

I imagine it will be a lot easier to find a coach now than when we went looking for a coach the last time.
I really don't think G will leave. Like it has been said before, he's being mentioned with bottom-feeder BCS jobs, which basically is what La Salle could be if we were in one of those leagues so it's really not a step up. Plus, he proved that at La Salle you can go to a Sweet 16 so it's not like there is much room left to go. At this point I would only expect him to leave if someone were to offer a job like Wake Forest, St john's, Seton Hall - mid level but solid BCS positions.

I don't think Northwestern took a serious look. They moved on Collins while we were still playing in the tournament. I would be shocked if G moved on this year, but the university should be proactive about keeping him by offering a significantly better contract. I suspect ADs looking at coaches would understand the difficulty of the job G has done here, but it might be tough to justify his hire to restless fans on the basis of one great run in nine years. When we repeat this and sustain success, the pressure will get more intense.

Two things I have to say:
1. Those who think G would not be interested in Rutgers because it is a "bottom feeder" - G took the La Salle job when it was the most toxic job in the country. He would take the Rutgers job in one second if the money was there. It is a BCS job in a fertile recruiting area and there is no doubt in my mind he would think he could turn that around when he though he could turn La Salle around. Whether the money is right is the question, along with how much La Salle will play this game and his desire to stay at La Salle.
2. G value will never be as high as it is now. If he wants to leave he knows this is his best opportunity. The thing that sucks for him is not a lot of jobs are open higher than La Salle which is very unusual. The FGC coach just got $1.5M next year from USC. Think G feels slighted?

LaSalle is negotiating as we speak with coach G. LaSalle loves G and wants him to stay. LaSalle will give him all they can. Remember the entire coaching staff usually gets a bump when this happens. I think he stays.

G has earned a good-sized raise, and I'll be unhappy if he doesn't get one, but Northwestern hired its coach before G said no one had contacted him, so unless he was lying he wasn't anywhere close to leaving. If Rutgers or somebody were actually interviewing him it would be one thing, but, as yet, that's not the reality.

No coach will ever admit that someone contacted them for a position. That's just negotiating.
Actually, one coach did do that -- ex-Manhattan/Seton Hall clown Bobby Gonzales used to call reporters to say he was being interviewed for job openings when he was a Jasper.

I would think a program above A10 level would want to see G 1) have another successful season (perhaps with 1 or 2 wins in the NCAA tournament 2) recruit well for 2014 off this season. If so, then he could be attractive. And there's always the chance he'll do a Martelli and decide to stay at la Salle.

How many years would they give him to turn things around? A hell of a lot less than La Salle did especially since they're going into the B10. Add to that the fact that the place is a train wreck and will be toxic for recruits (yes, like La Salle was, I know, but maybe even more so unless they dump the AD). I'd be surprised if he went unless he got say $700 to 800K a year for 5 years.

The only big contract positions at Rutgers are head football coach and C. Vivian Stringer. G maybe can get 700,000 at the top end, but he won't be given a king's ransom in comparison to what he may get down the road. The program has a lot more problems with it than the whole Rice thing. This is not a desirable job.

The team has a very good shot at making the NCAA's and advancing again. Doing that two years in a row validates a mid-high level BCS school hiring him. One run may be enough for Rutgers to hire him but that's it for right now. There will no doubt be more attractive job openings next season for him to be considered for. Another thing that I think might work in La Salle's favor is that G may want to stick around for Tyreek, Sam, and Tyrone's senior seasons. He really loves this group of kids and I think he's confident enough that next season will go well enough that better situations will pop up for him next year. I could see him taking the Rutgers job, but I think he enjoys being at La Salle enough to stay as long as they give him and his staff a nice new contract. I'm sure he'd like a big fat contract (who wouldn't), but I don't think it's all about money for him. I get the impression he is genuinely happy at La Salle, and that counts for something.

Is Rutgers a better job than G's current position? No. The basketball program is buried within a school that is desperate to keep up with Penn State on the academic and football side. The program is also buried within the recruiting region. G stays. He will leave for a position that is better than his current one. This is not the one.

Forgot to mention this, but G is scheduled to be on 97.5 with Missanelli this afternoon at 4:30. It will be interesting to see if this subject is brought up and how G responds.
I won't have access to a radio at 4:30, so if anyone can give a recap afterwards, I would appreciate it.

Football definitely, but they're more or less academically comparable. PSU's academic clout is tied up in part with name recognition that comes from the football program. But I agree. Rutgers is not a good job, I really can't see G going there this year.

If I'm G, I'm looking for a school that is committed to basketball. I would love a basketball only school. For a person like G, the best job that may open up next year is Seton Hall. That school has an alumni that is so desperate to win. They will pay big money for a person to win. It's also in a very desirable basketball only conference. I think if G goes, it's next year.

If G believes what you are saying then I think he would want to stay and hopefully work something out with La Salle as well. Again, I am not saying he will leave or wants to leave. Just throwing out reasons he would consider the Rutgers job.

I agree more with KJ on the second point. The real question is, what would I do if I were G? In that case, I'd look at what I've done long-term and short-term and compare that to the risks and opportunities of alternatives on a short-term and long-term basis. Based on that, I'd stay another year and see what can be built up further at La Salle compared to other alternatives. To boil it down, I'd weigh
Odds of turning around a down program (e.g. USC, NW, Rutgers) on a timetable the alumni will support and in a different league. IMO, it's unlikely for G to meet the test assuming he was in the running for all three. It took 7 long years in the A10 to see success for G. It's unlikely football schools will tolerate non-performance over a similar time frame, it's likely the spankings will be worse in leagues where there is a huge talent differential over what he'd inherit and the spotlight in the Big 10 and Pac 12 would only magnify those pressures.
Odds of increasing value by staying. Much better- at least for the next year. The risk of losing current value is really low. G went to the Sweet 16 on a limited budget. No one can take that away. The odds are that this team will make the dance next year. That only solidifies G's future value when the alternative prospects might be better.
Odds of being king and building sustainable value by staying long-term: pretty damn good. If you look at the smartest coaches and see what they are doing, they are upping their value and staying put. Stevens and Smart could have left a number of times for more dough and a bigger budget, but chose not to. If I had to look at the coaching carousel and the pressures of being at a huge school with huge pressure, I'd opt to build an empire off of a strong foundation I built over trying to right a sinking ship where the rats are leaving on a daily basis. Even if the money in the latter case was better short-term, I'd avoid it. If you step up a level and your turnaround plan works 50% faster than your last gig, you still may see the door in year 4. And then, the prospects of finding a MAAC-like job start entering the brain. I can't imagine that cash flow scenario is better than building value and staying and being a long-term hero or even king, in the process.
