There's been speculation on here that Dunphy took a low salary (and some thought maybe no salary) to help the school. La Salle's FY2023 tax filings were released on ProPublica today. projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/231352654La Salle operated $13M in the red in FY2023. Dunphy's first year salary was $511,557. Interesting that Ash was also paid $529,959 that year, of which $385K was designated as "severance" in the Schedule J: projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/231352654/202401069349301880/IRS990ScheduleJAlso of note in the Schedule J - Dunphy's initial contract was to end on April 5, 2024 - only a 2 year contract. I guess this explains the speculation at the end of the season. COMPENSATION FOR THESE EMPLOYEES IS SUBJECT TO AN INITIAL WRITTEN EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENT AS NOTED: FRANCIS J. DUNPHY, HEAD COACH MEN'S BASKETBALL - EFFECTIVE 4/6/2022 - 4/5/2024

Interesting. Explains a lot.
Wonder if he is now year to year. Would be best for both sides.

Can’t believe it’s that much. Not how it was told to me.

Surprised by the salary as well, I assumed it would much less based on the narrative that he was giving back to school in a time of need!

Considering he made 2M his final season at TU, 500K is a huge discount.

500k for a sub-500 record.

I am sure he is the lowest paid A10 head coach... He gave his alma mater a steep discount...
Don't understand the criticism AT ALL!! By far, the La Salle could get at the time...
The gym renovation is well underway as we speak... A10 level talent is on board...
Things are looking up for the Explorers

Yea I’m not understanding either. I think expectations need to be reset here. He’s not working with much at La Salle and yes, La Salle could’ve gotten someone else for less than 500K with a sub .500 record but my money would be that coach would have topped out at 10 wins the last 2 years, significantly lower talent level AND even less hope than we have today.

I think there is a little bit of surprise at the amount. The narrative had been that he was "doing La Salle a favor" to "save the program". Many, including me, interpreted that as paying him less than we paid Ash, given the financial circumstances of the school. We can't compare what he made in his last years at Temple to here. Apples and oranges.
I'm not sure how much better the program is now than if we had just let Ash finish his term and gotten an up and coming head coach from D2 or a lower tier program whod have been thrilled to come in and make $350K. Are we better having paid over $1M for 2 coaches in 2023 while the school operated $13M in the hole? We are still in the PIG and below .500 on a weak OOC schedule, and we know this isn't a long term play with Dunphy.

No regrets from me. It has been a pleasure watching a well coached team the past 2 years.
My biggest concern is the succession plan. Appears to be cloudy right now. At least for me.

My biggest concern is the succession plan. The succession plan is just like every other school does a succession plan. You post an opening. Take 500 resumes. Pick the best guy. Don't need to do anything else. Just be normal.

I'm not sure how much better the program is now than if we had just let Ash finish his term I agree with the sentiment but from what I hear, this was untenable.

Yeah, I guess the need to hire the successor from within when the incumbent retires or leaves in todays world is not as important when you can't retain your best players because they all leave to look for greener pastures is not as important.

and i have to disagree with you on ash. keeping him any longer would have been a huge mistake. Yeah. I was thinking purely financially there looking at the fact that we were paying for both and we might have been able to only pay for Ash for one more year and get someone else in. But I get it that the team culture was horrendous under him and as Joe said, it was untenable.

Totally understand and agree.
Perhaps the starting point is the difference. My POV then was despite there being a ton of interest in the position, there wasn’t a quality candidate that stood out and thus, Dunphy reluctantly stepped in to prevent the program from falling further. The program needed a credible coach at the helm OR a major splash with someone who would be able to bring in talent and have it translate to wins. I believe La Salle is too conservative nor in a position financially to do so after the Ashley Howard debacle.
So while I typically agree that sub .500 record from someone of Dunphy’s stature and pay is typically unacceptable, I think an exception in order. Unfortunately with La Salle, there’s always an exception or some “what if” at play and that’s usually because of poor decision making imo.

It's also not what happens at this level the vast majority of the time. Sure it does. Happens a lot if the program is successful.

Like at Villanova where Wright's surprise announcement and the hiring of his former assistant were announced concurrently.

Anthony Grant - Dayton Mark Schmidt - St. Bonaventure Chris Mooney - Richmond Ryan Odom - VCU Drew Valentine - Loyola
Billy Lange - St. Joseph's Keith Urgo - FordhamChris Caputo - George Washington Matt McKillop - DavidsonTony Skinn - George Mason The bolded coaches are internal hires. I'm only counting Valentine and Joyce because Neptune left Fordham screwed and Urgo was a snap hire. McKillop was gifted the position by his dad. It doesn't happen as often as you think. And I think it is rarely successful.

I'm really surprised at the negatives here. It's been a number of years since I enjoyed the games as much as I did these last two seasons. We were competitive in most games and while driving to the games I almost always thought we had a chance to win. There was more interest in the program then I can remember in a number of years and as Del stated, he has recruited an A 10 roster. I am thrilled that Dunph reupped and I think we are lucky to have him.

Yeah, no complaints/regrets here. If the $150-200K between a base level option and Dunphy really upsets people, I don't know what to say.

Which conferences would you like I’ll do them.

Does conference matter? Maybe it does but I would’ve simply focused on the historical aspects of hiring internally over a period of time. Perhaps that is an oversimplification though. I mean if we really wanted to geek out we could do that then later in conferences, then perhaps 3 and 5 years into a coach’s tenure. Then start looking at did they leave because of underperformance or because they moved up and defining a move up as a conference move or maybe the program. Like I said, total geek out.

I would like to see other mid majors. You may be right in this cause when I look at the A10. 4 higher performers came from the outside which was higher than I expected.

MVC
Matthew Graves - Indiana State Brian Wardle - Bradley Ben McCollum - Drake Scott Nagy - Southern Illinois Casey Alexander - Belmont Cuonzo Martin - Missouri State Steve Prohm - Murray State *(second stint) Ben Jacobson - Northern Iowa Ryan Pendon - Illinois State Roger Powell - Valparaiso Rob Ehsan - Illinois, Chicago David Ragland - Evansville
So two, maybe 2.5 out of 12.
AAC
Amir Abdur-Rahim - South Florida John Jakus - Florida Atlantic Aaron Fearne - Charlotte Andy Kennedy - UAB Penny Hardaway - Memphis Andy Enfield - SMU Ross Hodge - North Texas Michael Schwartz - East Carolina Eric Konkol - Tulsa Ron Hunter - Tulane Adam Fisher - Temple Paul Mills - Wichita State Rob Lanier - Rice Austin Claunch - UTSA
So two of 14.

It's not a thing that usually happens. We clamor for it here for some reason and it drives me insane. There will not be a shortage of good coaches applying for the La Salle basketball coaching job. You just might not have ever heard of them...which I think is actually a plus.

I’m assuming hiring internally is basically hiring someone already on staff but wouldn’t you consider Penny at Memphis an internal hire? Let’s be honest here, he only got the job because hes a famous player from there. Maybe that muddies things a bit though and shouldn’t be considered as part of this analysis.
