Perhaps the starting point is the difference. My POV then was despite there being a ton of interest in the position, there wasn’t a quality candidate that stood out and thus, Dunphy reluctantly stepped in to prevent the program from falling further. The program needed a credible coach at the helm OR a major splash with someone who would be able to bring in talent and have it translate to wins. I believe La Salle is too conservative nor in a position financially to do so after the Ashley Howard debacle. Multiple credible people wanted the La Salle job then. Some had ties to the area or to La Salle. Some of them were highly decorated. None of them went and played for La Salle and was a HOF-level Coach like Dunphy is and was. And after Dunphy's tenure here, if La Salle is still in the A-10, multiple credible people will want the job in a sea of applications that will come Puri's way.

You just might not have ever heard of them...which I think is actually a plus. This is where I'll land again when Dunphy decides he's had enough. Assuming we aren't getting someone insanely overqualified, I want someone I either didn't know of or wouldn't have thought of until they're hired or leaked as a candidate. That was where I was post-Howard and I'll be there 10x harder with Puri in charge of this one. Let him go outside the box and see where we land.

MVC
Matthew Graves - Indiana StateBrian Wardle - Bradley Ben McCollum - Drake Scott Nagy - Southern Illinois Casey Alexander - Belmont Cuonzo Martin - Missouri State Steve Prohm - Murray State *(second stint) Ben Jacobson - Northern IowaRyan Pendon - Illinois State Roger Powell - Valparaiso Rob Ehsan - Illinois, Chicago David Ragland - Evansville So two, maybe 2.5 out of 12. AACAmir Abdur-Rahim - South Florida John Jakus - Florida Atlantic Aaron Fearne - Charlotte
Andy Kennedy - UAB Penny Hardaway - Memphis Andy Enfield - SMU Ross Hodge - North Texas
Michael Schwartz - East Carolina Eric Konkol - Tulsa Ron Hunter - Tulane Adam Fisher - Temple Paul Mills - Wichita State Rob Lanier - Rice Austin Claunch - UTSA So two of 14. --- It's not a thing that usually happens. We clamor for it here for some reason and it drives me insane. There will not be a shortage of good coaches applying for the La Salle basketball coaching job. You just might not have ever heard of them...which I think is actually a plus. Can you do the MAAC and Colonial?

My opinion was formed based on how things played out in public, granted, we don’t have much media coverage but nothing was really positive about the process back then. Dunphy wasn’t exactly jumping at the opportunity and it was evident. I even believe there was an article saying Dunphy was assisting La Salle in their efforts to find the next head coach. Maybe I’m confusing that speculation with what’s been reported on this board vs actual media reporting. Maybe I’m wrong, I hope so. And I hope you’re right that there will be high quality candidates to take over which quite possibly can be after this upcoming season.

MAAC
Tom Pecora - Quinnipiac Chris Casey - Fairfield John Dunne - Marist Kevin Baggett - Rider Bashir Mason - Saint Peter's Greg Paulus - Niagara (not a lol guy but Greg Paulus) Tobin Anderson - Iona Donny Lind - Mount St Mary's Jim Christian - Canisius Siena - Gerry McNamara (not a lol guy but Gerry McNamara)
Started strong in my research but only 3 of 11. Including two of my most hated players of all time.
Colonial
Charleston - Chris Mack Drexel - Zack Spiker Hofstra - Speedy Claxton UNCW - Takayo Siddle Towson - Pat Skerry Delaware - Martin Inglesby Stony Brook - Geno Ford Monmouth - King Rice Campbell (and future La Salle head coach) - Kevin McGeehan Northeastern - Bill Coen Elon - Billy Taylor NC A&T - Monte Ross William and Mary - Brian Earl Hampton - Ivan Thomas
I thought there was going to be more at this level, but there isn't. It doesn't happen that often. This board really wants to know the future but the future is a job opening, nothing more than that.

In fairness, a lot of the coaches brought in from the outside haven’t done well either.
Obviously other factors are affecting the success/failure of the programs.

My argument is not about the success of the new coach. Just the rarity of what is often proposed on this board.

Its like "what are the odds this guy who was a good player for your franchise is your best GM candidate". Sure, it works out sometimes, but its nearly impossible you're picking the best candidate for that role.
(Also, Penny Hardaway should be bolded.)

He wasn’t an internal hire. If we’re bolding former players there’s like 3-4 more that would be.

Oh, I thought this was for all potential Legler-y picks.

It was for a broad ‘succession plan’ idea so maybe it was. Almost 90% of coaches mentioned were just hires though. And that’s what La Salle should do. If Tim wants to put his resume in, I’m sure he’ll get some legacy points. Ash Puri won’t hire him though.
