One of my big hang-ups with La Salle NIL contributions is even if La Salle has a good year and finishes 4th in the league and wins 20 games but fails to make the postseason, were my contributions a waste? If this happens, my worry is half of your team is gone the following year.

I can't believe I'm even considering this, but if somebody wants to QB an Explorertown grassroots thing where we try and buck up 100K via 100 or 200 dollar collections, let's just say I'm intrigued. This is pretty delusional

Ha ha. But I wasn’t thinking of it being initiated by Pat. I was hoping for some adult supervision from Baptiste to terminate an obvious non performing coach mid season. They terminated him anyway. Schools do it. Didn’t get the big pushback for terminating during a season but some people here have a sacred cow they worship as far as that point goes.

This is pretty delusional Maybe it is, Maybe it isn't. What is the alternative? To keep having the same exact conversation over and over again about how people don't like the concept of NIL, discuss not wanting "pay to play", suggest that congress gets involved, discuss how congress is inept, pivot back to a conversation about post-1992 failures and the wind up in the same exact place on a new thread? Let's not discourage those that are still enthused about trying to get involved in any way or donate to the program or NIL by telling them/us why it is useless or delusional.

If you want to say this board was the impetus, fine but there is really no need. The delusional comment is directed to the fact that many including admins have stated there are about 30 posters here. How you get that up to 1,000 and then take an average of $100 from each IMO is delusional. But hey go for it if you want

It is grassroots in the sense of people on this board pushing ourselves and others to get involved and donate even if at a smaller level. I am trying to get people enthusiastic at a basic level i.e. Grassroots. I never suggested that we or I start a new fund. To be honest I wouldn't know the first thing about that. Explorer's United, as far an I am concerned, is the way to go. I am just looking to speak with people who want to get involved and get others involved in donating to that, even if it as at a $100-$200 value. And if there is not an interest, that is okay also.

I’m not going to give a dime to the NIL stuff. I won’t tell you what to do with your money. But like someone said before — none of this was intended for colleges to buy players from each other. I was thinking it was going to be more “the NCAA and the conferences give a cut to their players” and “Caitlyn Clark is really famous and can make some money.” I would rather give to the school’s general fund or what have you.
Like… we should just drop down to the MAAC. The resource war isn’t about arenas anymore. It’s about how much a sketchy NIL collective can grab. We’re a small Catholic school without a big following. We have next to zero chance of competing for players looking for NIL cash against most of the A-10 if other programs get serious about this. GW and Fordham and Richmond and Davidson and Duquesne have a lot of wealthy alum (and wealthy students.) VCU and URI are large state schools. Dayton is such a strong program.
We should be smarter and more realistic with our resources. Compete with who we can compete with. The A-10 isn’t a consistent multi-bid league anymore. The only reason we had two this year is because Duquesne won the conference.

There are a lot of scams out there.....'the grandparent one, you won a prize, we're calling from the IRS" etal.......the NIL is now one of them. Even over-educated yahoos can fall for them...this is proof. Buy a player......LOL. 1,000 give $100 each and then next year it will be how much? Like a time share, but only one place to go. Colleges have to be laughing at all this, not their money.

I am having trouble wrapping my head around anti-donation comments. Like I have said, no pressure to do anything with your money. But I am questioning the purpose of again and again talking people out of supporting the program. The anti-NIL discussion is not a new one to this board, so it’s just a broken record at this point.

I would love for La Salle to remain competitive in college basketball. But, realistically, financially, there is just about zero chance that happens. Even with good intentions. This is the just the beginning of the new NIL landscape. The tip of the iceberg. There is no way a La Salle, or a St Joe's can remain competitive with Penn St., or Florida, or Texas.
In 10 years there will likely be a super conference of schools willing to pay. Then some sub-conferences acting as minor league feeders for the big schools. La Salle has to start playing chess, not checkers, and start entering into serious & long conversations with similar schools, with a plan & rules for how they want to operate their college sports teams in 10 years.
It is time to return to a MAAC-like conference, where all conference schools agree on a realistic player payment cap, or decide that sports are to become more like club sports at many schools -- competitive, but not a salaried position for their athletes.

It won't work in the short or long term. Basically you are buying a team for one year until the kid gets a better offer, then he's "outta here". Junior Colleges for the Cash Cows. But lets get those "mite" boxes going. Maybe we can get the government to fund it.....LOL.

Joe - a lot to unpack in your post and this is the first chance I've gotten to really thoroughly read it and comment. Some interesting points added by others as well.
We aren't going to be competitive in the NIL world for many of the reasons you've outlined...not the least of which being the ask from multiple avenues to give to La Salle. Heck...I received a text in the summer asking me to contribute to buying airplane banner to fly over the shore advertising La Salle because admissions had no money for it. It gets exhausting feeling like we are constantly being hit up for money....and we are because of the financial shape of the school that's been well documented on here, in articles, and in public 990 filings.
You can't win a war when you fight on multiple fronts, and it feels like basketball-wise, we are trying to spread our limited resourced over multiple fronts. I'd imagine if Glaser were bequeathing the money today, he'd probably be looking more at the collective than facilities. Of course...that doesn't buy a name on a building and get us a bunch of mercenaries year-to-year. That also doesn't build a lasting legacy.
Is the answer to give everyone the same, or scale it based on what grade a player is or their tenure with the school? Maybe, but I'd imagine resentment building up from the guys playing 35 minutes a game versus the guys riding the pine and only seeing significant action in blowouts or against Rosemont. This also seems to turn the team into a union, and there are already examples of that happening in college sports (I posted an article about that at Dartmouth that you moved it the "Other" thread because it wasn't deemed "La Salle relevant", but it is essentially what you are proposing. Does this get us out of the PIG and out of the bottom third of the A10? Who knows.
The downside of giving everyone the same is that we know players will leave for more. They already are. A bunch of A10 schools have lost players to the Big East. La Salle and St. Joe's have become Providence-prep - is it 4 players that have gone there in the past few years from these schools? Tyler Kolek went from Mason to Marquette. Burton went from Richmond to Villanova. Now Brickus to Nova. Sure. Brizzi went from Nova to Davidson, but it seems more go the other way, and with NIL...that will get bigger for the more talented players.
Big5 mentioned the idea of a salary cap per league. We will be in the "have nots" of that. No way we can afford a salary cap like the Power schools can, and that salary cap may actually end up dictating what league we ultimately join. I could imagine a world where conferences setup these caps, and if you aren't competitive, you sort of self-select to "go down". (This ignores other sports besides the revenue ones, but it isn't far-fetched).
Maybe the answer for La Salle is to "do nothing". Wait for this all to be legislated by schools and leagues with larger fan bases and more lobbying power. Wait for the lawsuits to be settled. Focus on building a culture and identity and on our facilities instead of going out and buying players, and accept that we will have guys for one to two years if they are good and maybe longer if they buy into the culture and system. If our identity is to be a team that bombs 3-pointers and plays hard-nosed defense, then get those players...get the guys that are hungry and sell them on the culture and identity. Again, does this get us out of the PIG and the bottom third of the A10? Who knows...all I do know is we aren't going to be competitive in NIL. We just don't have the excited fan base to do that, and I agree with Joe and it feels like "throwing good money after bad" (or "catching the falling knife" to borrow an investment term). It feels pointless to me.
Would a doubling of our collective funds have given us more players and gotten us more wins? Maybe, but I doubt it would have moved the needle significantly. Would it have made us competitive enough to compete at the upper levels of the A10? Doubtful. The guy jumping ship for 350K wasn't the answer, throwing the money at Brantley so he stays isn't the answer. The answer is to acknowledge truthfully that our collective is minimal and will continue to be, so why bother even focusing on that.
The outcome of all this is that a lot of people are going to lose interest in La Salle basketball - and in a lot of college basketball programs. I've spoken with people who haven't renewed their tickets and have no plans to, both because of team performance and the idea of buying players. The fan base is dwindling, and while there will be a nice bump next year for the new arena, it will be like people going into an Open House with no intention of buying. Let's not even play that game. Build an identity and culture, focus on the facilities, and be who we are while the dust settles on all this.

I think it is almost impossible to put a long-term plan in place given the potential changing legislation and conference realignments that are happening. All that is out of La Salle's control and will likely look much different in 2029, 2031, and 2034. Our horizon should be 5 years and just accept that we are about building a team culture and making the game-day experience enjoyable. The rest can sort itself out...but those other pieces are in La Salle's control. It will start with a coach, which I assume we will be looking for at the end of next season...and La Salle has to get this one right.

I think you hit on a lot of good topics here, but there's not going to be an easy solution to any of it. The biggest underlying problem that you highlighted was when you mentioned that there is no one young on this message board. The only way to improve our standing long-term (locally, regionally, or nationally) without one of the 30 weirdos on here winning the Mega Millions is to find a way to get students to be interested in the team. And I don't know how you do that. Pizza giveaways and half-court shots are fun, but they don't seem to be doing the trick. I am 37 now, and I don't know what makes 18-22 year-olds interested in 2024. Male students, female students - I don't really care. If students continue to not be interested in the team, then the future is only going to get more bleak as people on this board pass away or move away or forget their login passwords. There has to be a way to do it, but I don't have a clue what it is. And it seems like all the well-intentioned efforts to improve student interest have not yielded much in the way of results. Maybe the new arena will help, but maybe not. Just my two cents (which, admittedly, is more than I have given to the NIL collective). I am a current student at La Salle, and the most upsetting thing for me is that we have 800-1100 student living on/around campus and there will only 50 in the stands on gameday. While winning is obviously the most effective way to improve attendance, I can say that there is a student run organization that should be in place at the beginning of next season with the goal of improving attendance at all sporting events and trying to boost overall school spirit. The hope is that we can use the excitement of the new arena as an initial draw and retain a decent student section now that it will be behind the basket and not 30 feet from the court. If anyone has any suggestions/ideas, please message me as I'd love any feedback that may help.

I am glad you posted this giveanks1 this stuff is happening everywhere...
This is perhaps the worst case in a while... but is this going to stop Hugh, the car dealership, sleaze ball...
Nah...
Gotta love all of the Sun Belt, SEC school-domiciled politicians... Dragging their feet with this to get protection for this kid... So the boosters, who, funny enough, are the politician's biggest donors, create havoc. Not even with schools like La Salle, St Joes, etc., but with the kids and families after they commit.
