Fran Dunphy says he’ll sit down with the university president and leadership within the athletic department to figure out what his future holds when asked about potentially retiring.
“I want what’s best for La Salle”
Let me say I really hope he has another year in him. We are so lucky to have him. He is a terrific coach and we are so lucky to have him. He deserves to leave when he wants. Selfishly I want another year from him.

Makes me think he had a 2 or 3 year deal...maybe just through the Ash payout?

I really hope he comes back. Our best players really seem to like him and are willing to play FOR him. I'd like to see the results he gets with his recruits/transfers and the refurbished arena.

Gentlemen, I say this with the utmost respect, but I can only ride this Dunphy train for another 2 years, max...
Yesterday, I was half joking when I said to offer G the job. Today, I'm still there. At least call over to Mullica Hill and take John's temperature on coaching again.

Surely they talked about Dunphy's future plans with Deuce Jones during the recruiting process....

I always believed that Dunphy came back because he rang the bell with donors. Now that the renovation is underway that’s a big check
However he has done a great job coaching and the team is a credit to the university. I hope he stays another year or two

Not to jump in the middle of the huge deal over which town Giannini lives in now … next year has to be totally Dunphy’s call without pressure. If he wants year one in the new arena, he gets it. If he’s finished or exhausted, let him go. He’s done more than his job so this is solely his decision.

No thanks to G
Dunphy will be an interesting situation, college basketball is a different animal than he is used to. Jay Wright simply left, he didn’t want to be a part of this new system. Pitino is crying to the masses. “every good player in the MAAC got poached away”… Interesting look will be where did those players go.
Dunphy is admittedly behind on NIL. The school NIL is in the 6 figures after just rolling out. Not the worst feat.
Very interesting offseason where the roster needs a nice recharge and reboot.

Not sure what Dunphy is telling to potential recruits but I can't believe he is recruiting guys but telling them he won't be here. I also can't believe he is telling recruits that he will coach a few years of he doesn't believe he will still be here. Just doesn't strike me as a person who would lie about that to recruits. If he is and remains healthy I hope he has two or three more years in him. Despite the team's overall record, I enjoyed watching them. Competitive despite size and depth disadvantages, made me feel as I drove to Gola that we had a chance.I liked feeling that way. He's a great coach and will be hard to replace. I understand that he won't last forever but really hope he has a couple more years. That being said. I'm sure he and Ash have discussed who his replacement should be and if that person is available and interested then Dunphy may believe he's done what he can to get us moving forward.

We also likely lose our best players if Dunph leaves, so let’s hope he stays. I am confident he will want to do another year.

We will lose most of our players for sure if Dunphy Steps down. For me losing players isn't my concern. It is losing Dunphy. None of these players are so special La Salle can't find someone like them. La Salle can't replace Dunphy from the coaching side.
I don't think anyone will match what we have in bench coaching strength that we have now. Recruiting? Yes, I am sure we can find someone that on the surface can get higher level recruits than we have, but the ability to coach up and develop them? I don't think we find anyone better.
I don't think La Salle can win without a system coach now. This assumes when Dunphy leaves and we need to find a new coach. I would like to drag that decision out as long as I can and ride Dunphy's guidance.

below are links to the full postgame presser (la salle part starts at 18 minutes) and an inquirer article by jeff neiburg. i really have a problem with a quote that mark schmidt felt the need to throw in there. he claims dunph took the job "when no one else wanted it". i call bullshit on that. plenty of people wanted the job, just not anyone that the decision makers at la salle were 100% in agreement on. i've never seen dunph so emotional. he genuinely seems to have really loved coaching this group of kids and they loved playing for him. would love to see them all run it back. i hope there's a way la salle can make it work. i can't remember the last time i've taken a loss this hard. i can only imagine how the team and coaching staff are feeling right now. i feel awful for all of the kids but especially for shep because you just know the kid is taking missing that last shot hard. he was a huge part of this team's success and he needs to remember that. www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/i-want-whatever-is-best-for-la-salle-after-explorers-season-ends-fran-dunphy-talks-future/ar-BB1jS9qQ

from the article: Dunphy indicated that he had a contract for next season. La Salle does not talk publicly about personnel and contracts. Dunphy said he will take the next few days and sit down with athletic director Ashwin Puri and school president Daniel J. Allen, who he said he had “great faith in.”

Not having a succession plan for Dunph will only hurt recruiting. In light of his age, every potential recruit will be wondering when, not if, Dunph will step down. The best solution is to move Dunph to 'associate' coach with meaningful responsibilities and a 2-year contract. This will help with player retention. Replace one of the assistants with someone with good recruiting connections. The athletic department needs to get moving on this issue.
Let's not forget. We were 6-12 in conference and below .500 for the season.

It ran it's course and he did a lot of good but I would not go back to him. I would have interest in Martelli. I do think we need a systems coach here ultimately but only one that I could plug basketball gym rats into so I could increase the talent pool for the program. Martelli could persuade me to put that on hold for a while.

His lack of head coaching experience will bother some but he's been a successful assistant at Bonnie's, knows the league and was an assistant here. Certainly an interesting candidate.

Give Dunph another year, and get a plan in place. Michigan won like 9 games this year. Maybe get Phil on our staff a year early... it would cost us extra money, but would be the best staff in the A10.
I'm sure that Phil wants another bite at the apple.
