Neumann - they had all the momentum and played a great 2nd half, until they started milking the clock each possession. Had a chance to possibly put the game away with 5 min to go but sat on it. As I said, almost blew the Temple game that way and did today. Too much pressure from VCU to think you can shorten the game that early (he actually started with almost 7 min to go)

La Salle played a pretty good second half, for the most part. That's when the wheels usually come off for them.
They just don't have the horses this year to keep up with a VCU-type-team in double-overtime.

I hear what you're saying, I just see it differently. I think it was more in execution than gameplan.

What makes anybody think that VCU is that good because they are not. We lost because we stopped playing to early and horrendous officiating. Behind G but will always be recognized as an OK coach when handling in game decisions. We still don't know how to get a good shot at the end of a game. Zack had game won in regulation but instead of going up and drawing a foul with a second or two left he did some idiotic bullshit.

By the weay maybe J.Schuler can come in on the weekends and teach these guys how to shoot free throws because that was also a contributing factor in this loss. NIT will not be easy to make after our next loss to easily the best team in A10 which doesn't have many this season. G.W. and VCU proved they are frauds by how we played them because we were right there with them and we are a borderline NIT team.

64 records can be very misleading bacuase without looking it up how many big wins does VCU have. If I had to guess maybe one.

That's horrendous logic to use. GW and VCU are bad because we're bad and we played them well? That's an argument?

64 records can be very misleading bacuase without looking it up how many big wins does VCU have. If I had to guess maybe one. Well every team I told you they'd beat, you just would say that team sucks. Looking at their schedule now, there's not a huge amount of quality wins, but they're sure are a lot of them. They're a tournament team no question. So unless the thing they are "frauds" of is not being a national title contender, I disagree. This is not to excuse the loss by the way. See my earlier posts.

Looked up VCU and have beat no team currently rated in top 30. Did beat Virginia by 3 points VCUwhen the were rated 25 early in season but they now are rated about 35. VCU is living off reputation because they have beat no team worth talking about.

I don't agree with using that as the only criteria, but we could go round and round and get nowhere, so I'll just say that they make up for quality with quantity.

Said already, but the game plan was spot on. Executing the game plan late was the issue, but it'd be ignorant to talk about this without acknowledging that foul trouble probably dictated a certain portion of why certain things were done.
Khalid probably picks up more at the of the 2nd, and then we're dead in the first OT. When we hit the second OT, we were dead in the water. Our bigs were all but done, with Reddic left to rule the land.
Props to Rohan and Khalid's effort. Side note, if anyone wants to know about Jermaine Davis' relevancy, he didn't even get off the bench with Jerrell and Steve out and Rohan with 3. Meh.

We're like the extremely poor man's 2012-2013 Villanova. All the pieces are there, good things happen, but piecing together a run is about impossible.

It will be interesting to see the coach's post mortem comments. G needs to work officials especially when in my opinion VCU getting call after call, know he cannot and will out single out the officiating crew, but wish he would have complanied more during game. Worse officiated (one sided) game I've seen in recent memory...

Im not going to go as far as saying the game was called one-sided, but I think it was poor practice of the refs to repeatedly interject themselves into the game at crucial moments.
Okay, maybe it was kinda one sided, but we benefitted from calls too. But it's not my style to call total knit-picky stuff at the end when it hadn't been strictly enforced prior.
Couple handchecks, that backcourt violation (that wasn't).
Does anyone know if that's a reviewable play? G was trying to get them to go to the monitors but they refused.

Worse officiated (one sided) game I've seen in recent memory... I agree with you. Gotta wonder a bit when the TV announcer mentions several times that the official is now calling what the coach (Smart) was complaining about 3 minutes earlier. a palming call at a critical time in the game? ? really My bottom line is even if the officating is lined against you....you have to beat that too, no excuses. But, i saw some things today that were just miff worthy! is this Shaka Smart some kind of league darling? It seems to have gone out of fashion and now gets you a bad rap but years ago if a coach felt there was a one-sided zebra job going on they would take a T early to make the point. Even get thrown out. Jerrell may need some protection in this regard.

RE: Our veteran guards
- IMO, the most important shot of the game didn't involve overtime at all. At the 3:20 mark in regulation we set up a PERFECT three point opportunity for Sam Mills. Wide open. And he missed what would have been a back breaker with the lead we had. Just a few seconds later, Mills let a pass go right through his hands for a turnover (admittedly not easy to handle, but winners catch it).
- Duren missing the game clinching first shot on the one-and-one. It was an in & outer, but still a crucial, game deciding miss. Tyreek did do a fine job with the press - as did everyone with a fine use of Zack.
- Garland's second half was as good as he's ever played. He showed why he's a scorer and not a shooter. BTW, he would've stripped that ball if Mills hadn't been called for the reach-in. He was in perfect postion just waiting to pounce.
......................................................................................
ONCE AGAIN - as I've posted before, we start out great going inside to JW. Then G takes him out for no apparent reason other than rotation. Then he goes the rest of the half and much of the game with no participation in the offense. Heck - last year Jerrell showed he can play extended minutes. Let him do it!!!! That being said, Wright has to learn when it's wiser to give up a basket than take another foul.
And as much as I think Lappas is a dork - I agree with him that it is unwise to sit big men for the rest of the first half after they pick up two fouls. Rotate them in and out a little to keep them "in the game". A perfect example of this was Zack in the Bonnie game.
Agree Lewis is a defensive monster. Rohan Brown is growing in leaps and bounds. DJ plays good D, but allows teams to concentrate on the other four on the floor.
Finally - has anyone else notice that Mills has the "anti follow-through" on his shot? Shooters tend to follow-through with their hands and forearms, or at least keep them stationary. Sam seems to actually pull his back. I've not seen others do and it looks sorta weird.

At least they put forth an effort today. But bottom line, a senior and junior laden team just can not blow a 6 point lead at home with about a minute or so left in the game. You just can't do that. But it sums up this disappointing season to date. Really tough lost to deal with.

Really disappointed. Zack was wide open to win the game and threw up some garbage. He played well overall, but blew an easy opportunity to be a hero. I don't know if G has an issue with wright but he really doesn't get enough time. Probably kept him on the bench because zacks height was critical to breaking havoc.
VCU brought some opera singer up who was pretty much louder than the home crowd, really appreciate their passion. The refs can suck a d**k. As mentioned before it was one sided today, the 10 second call was bullshit. They called fouled out of position and a lot of soft calls as well. I think g needs to get a T and make a statement.

even up 10 in 2nd half, I had flashbacks to leading Nova by 8 with a couple minutes to play a few years back... wish I wasn't right for feeling that way.
that being said, 11-8 and not worried about NCAA bid. just hoping team can get some good wins in February (@umass, hosting St Louis, @richmond) to build some confidence going into the A-10 tourney so we don't exit in the quarterfinals for the billionth time.
re: VCU - 16-4, Reddic and Graham have NBA potential. with Wright playing a whopping 13 minutes (somehow 10 points) and fouling out, and Zack with 4 fouls... once we got to overtime the more talented team won.

Back from a VERY disappointing game. A few thoughts:
The refs sucked. Just absolutely sucked. The foul disparity wasn't huge, but the number of fouls not called on VCU for hand checks, bumping and bodying up was mind boggling. One of the worst ref jobs I've seen in a long, long time. The 10 second violation call was whistled too quick. The play where Tyreek had to leap the player should have been a foul even before he got to that point. It was bad.
Steve had no sense of the game clock on that last play in regulation. I think he panicked and just big time hurried his shot. He had time to literally lay it in against the backboard for the win or worst case he would have been hammered and gone to the line for two. It was there for the taking and he blew it there.
Same with DJ on the half court heave. He had time to get a lot closer to the basket before he needed to shoot, he simply panicked.
Even with the bad officiating in the game, we beat ourselves. Up 6 with a little more than a minute and the team fell apart. It was tough to watch in person. Rough, rough loss.
VCU travels really well. There fans were there in force and they were loud.
