Kinda a crazy he hasn't visited anyway officially yet. Will be at the exhibition game tomorrow.
Marcus Helton?@marcushelton1h Theodore Roosevelt (DC) 2014 PG Johnnie Shuler is on the way to La Salle for his first official visit. #DMVhoops @shuler_kid

Make it happen G..... This would be a FANTASTIC pickup for a player that is coming on the scene hard late in his HS career!
4 Guards would be a must if Johnnie joins the program...

Someone make a sign and guilt him into coming. Not serious, but still...

Does anyone know how Johnnie Shuler's liked his visit. Would really love to have the young man on next year's team joining A.Stukes and K.Lewis at the 1/2 position. Don't know how much J.Price and C.Roberts will see of the 2 position and assume they will play 3 for the most part with some 4 when we go smaller.

Know someone on here was sitting pretty close to him, for whatever that's worth. Forget who, but maybe there's some insight. The crowd and atmosphere were great for an exhibition game, so I think that'd be a plus.

They sat Tony Washington next to Shiuler at the game. They exchanged greets when they met and then I didn't see the two say one word to each other that I saw. Just odd the two had no communication sitting next to each other.
Probably me over-thinking things but I would hope the two would have had some rapport as potential teamates.

As someone who does not follow the recruiting scene, what's the consensus on this kid as a player? Would he be a big time get?

As someone who does not follow the recruiting scene, what's the consensus on this kid as a player? Would he be a big time get? Not 4 or 5 star player but a very valuable and productive point guard. I might add very exciting too. Valuable insurance at PG position and the fact is he is one of those smaller really quick guards. After this year we have guards who are tall. We all know our past history of having problems defending small quick guards. Can not go wrong grabbing a Washington DC tough guard. A Pappy Owens discovery. Glad he enjoyed his visit.

“[La Salle] has nice buildings on campus. Nice dorms, nice gym. Everything was just nice,” Shuler said.
Nice gymnasium? At least he knew to not call it an arena...

If he commits, I'll chalk this up to Tony Washington whispering sweet nothings into his ear all game long.

Johnnie Shuler would give us the type of player we don't have and that is a very quick player who can guard the Chaz williams of the world. We need a minimum of three guards who play the 1/2 position and as of next season we would only have two players in K.Lewis and A.Stukes. I realize that C.Roberts could play the two (and at times may) but with his size and skills he along with J.Price and D.J. are more suited to the 3 or 4 positions. If J.Shuler does commit G can focus all his attention on 6-8 or bigger player for the remaining (2)schollies for 2014.

Out of the schools that have offered him, Seton Hall, Fairfield, and Quinnipiac are out of scholarships. Saint Louis has one left but has already gotten verbals from three guards, two of them being points. Towson has one scholarship left but has already gotten verbals from four guards, one of them being a point. Boston U only had two scholarships to give and gave one to a combo guard and has one left.
Unless he wants to wait on the high-majors that were tracking him during the summer (Miami, UNLV, Villanova, VA Tech, and DePaul), you have to believe it looks good for La Salle. Like Jellybean said, he's a perfect fit with all of the big guards on the roster for next season and beyond. Need another smaller, quicker guard on the roster to cover those same types of guards that will be going against La Salle.
One thing he mentions is not committing until the start of his season in December. I'd be surprised if G would accept that. I think he's going to need to make up his mind and sign early (signing period is Nov.13-20) if he wants the scholarship.

I like that he said he thought the players were cool and funny. And that G lets players just go on offense as long as they play D.

We all know our past history of having problems defending small quick guards. Can not go wrong grabbing a Washington DC tough guard. A Pappy Owens discovery. Glad he enjoyed his visit. For a comparable in terms of recruiting progress think Stukes. Stukes was a late bloomer into the basketball scene by the time he committed, his school profile was starting to grow. If Stukes would have waited, he would have had more A-10 offers or higher. He was just very competitive against some of the best high school competition in the country (Newton, Jordan, etc). When you have a player does not look outmatched and in some cases outplaying those guys (see links below), you know you are getting value. He is just a late bloomer. Remember just because someone doesn't have Kentucky, UCLA, Duke knocking at their door doesn't mean that they are great player.. things happen and players overlooked ala Steve Smith, Adam Morrison.. cityofbasketballlove.com/2013/01/la-salle-hs-ends-neumann-gorettis-win-streak/cityofbasketballlove.com/2013/04/donofrio-classic-recap-april-10-2013/Shuler is very similar. We are talking about one of the best Senior PGs from one of the most talented areas in America for basketball. He is very underrated and easily should be higher than a "3 star" just based off where he plays and where he is on the pecking order. He made school changes early in his high school career which naturally puts you slightly behind in the recruiting exposure arena. He has the offers from other large conference schools (STL and Seton Hall) and is garnering interest nationally ala UNLV and Miami. He isn't a regional recruit anymore. Benefits for him to join us, we play a style that puts his strengths as a player at the forefront. He will get immediate playing time and the new TV deal (what are we 22 televised games and 20 are nationally televised??). The talent on next year's team is going to crazy and an expectation to make the NCAA tournament is absolutely there. Benefits for us is that we is a fantastically talented player that facilitates. With the offensive arsenal that we are going to have next year, it puts less pressure of Shuler to score which is great for a freshman. He can hit the open 3, when either Price, Lewis, Stukes or Roberts kick out to him. What makes this a great situation for us, if Johnnie does commit is that it allows G to focus on a big man , it confirms our recruiting presence in DC and it gives us a true PG.

Maybe they told him we only play exhibition games in there... Maybe we blindfolded him and someone lied with the description of the buildings. "'And over here is a state of the art weight room."

We better get him signed before he sees another arena if he thinks ours is nice, Johnnie must be easy to please. Thanks for the info on him as a player. Feels like it's been an issue forever with smaller, quick guards beating us so would love to see us get someone who could help us in that area.

It was Shuler's only official visit so he hasn't been able to compare our gym to other places except for ones he visited unofficially.
I would agree that G should put on the press to get him signed for next week instead of letting him get on in the spring. That would be dangerous. Hopefully G closes the deal.

Kjmac I agree with you regarding the early signing period. If J.Shuler doesn't go with us by Nov. 20th he would just be holding us off to see if a better offer is coming his way. This is a bigger gamble on his part than G's because the A10 is a pretty strong conference and G is a very good recruiter. I hope Johnnie decides on us but you never know.

G gets the kid to visit, he says he had a great time, really liked the campus, and is thinking seriously about committing, and people feel the need to turn it into another facility trashing thread. I don't get it.

That's what I get for making a lighthearted joke, I guess. Should have known it would have opened the flood gates. That fact that La Salle is where he is leaning is phenomenal news, though. Hoping he doesn't slip til the spring, would open the door for some big name schools scrambling for guards.

G can also talk about bringing Miami to the Palestra.
but sounds like the kid is down to earth and realizes the value of playing in a packed small gym instead of an airy NBA-like arena (like temple) or a ski lodge.

Emphasis on the word "playing".
As long as we have G and remnants of the Sweet 16 squad, we're going to be safely on the plus side even with the facilities' minus. If we get that taken care of ... things could be really, really fun.
