You can feel the disappointment in G's words . Time to go get that shooter!

The way I saw it: - Ndoye happened to have the game of his life so far. - A highly questionable foul call on Zack in the first half changed the dynamic. If not for that call, Zack could have continued covering Ndoye one-on-one hoping that he'd cool off (which he did). - If that suspect call was not made, JW would not have had to double team Ndoye as much, which left Simmons open for followups (he had six offensive rebounds - almost all stick backs). - Tyreek missing the two technical free throws somewhat deflated us and altered the momentum. - The failure to call a foul on Tyrone's drive. - Jermaine Davis did a good job drawing the offensive foul and seconds later was open under the basket, but JW didn't get it to him. - Garland was miserable shooting day but had an OK floor game with 5 assists.
( BTW, the first 3 were most important in my mind ).

69, I think the bigger message is that yesterday was a microcosm of this season. The team we saw yesterday is a highly flawed team, our record indicates that, and it's less about individual moments/whistles/decisions but those larger flaws that we couldn't overcome.
That said, I don't disagree with those points.

I read this this morning also and it certainly caught my attention. But after reading I was left itching for details. I certainly have my guesses but would love to know the coach's particulars here.

I think what he is saying is Garland should have been the 6th man like he was last year. The only way you can start 3 guards 6'2, 6'0 and 6'0 is if you are going to use a fast break offense which G didn't do (I think he should have). I got the sense that Garland is an assertive guy with a burning desire to succeed on a mostly laid back team, just like Galloway last year. The problem is that he just doesn't have the same skills. He stepped into the assertiveness void and although well intentioned, often did more harm than good. Last year's SW Philly floater was frequently blocked this year. G did a lot of yelling on the sideline but didn't make the adjustment that might have fixed this, e.g. playing Duren exclusively at point guard and using Garland as 6th man (or running an up tempo offense that would negate the height disadvantage and utilize Garland's skills, his incredible speed and driving ability in a free form fast break offense).

I don't think Giannini had many other options than what we saw. So you run Garland as the 6th man and you start who? 6th man or not, the team isn't as talented with him off the court AND you're still going to have the same issues, whether he's off the bench or starting. And I'm not sure this team had the skills to run an up-tempo offense, we were barely a threat from anything past 15 feet.
Not trying to be a G apologist, just not sure if there was an alternative.

So glad to read G say he has got to recruit better talent. I know he goes on to say that it is not easy but he can't bring in MAAC type players anymore. We just were not athletic enough. We will not be able to compete in this league for the long haul unless he does so. My advice would be to still recruit the kids you feel you have no shot at in the hope that they will transfer to us if it doesn't work out. One thing for sure is that the A10 is for real. All the teams have done a great job of elevating their programs. I was at dinner last night with a guy who played D1 college hoops. He said the Big East stinks and the A 10 is better. Wow. People are taking notice. The finality of the end of the season is painful. I was encouraged by that article though. I think G is going to work even harder now.

I am wondering whether coach G was reconsidering the offense we play given the personnel we had? Another glaring issue to me was our defense. And while playing Jerrell more, and Jerrell and Steve together more added more punch to the offense. On the defensive end too many times it amounted to trading baskets. Our D and interior D in particular was poor too often. At heart I think coach G is a man-to-man defense guy. I believe that our guys were probably most schooled in man-to-man. I suspect next year much more emphasis will need to be placed on zone D from the get-go.

I think G was hoping for Lewis to start. I think other teams have found out how to shut down Garland and Mills in the lane which is why these two can't go one on one. Tyreek has better moves around the basket. Garland and Mills need to be set up to beat defenses with their speed, not in a standaround offense.

I agree. Stand around offense sums it up. G better go back to the drawing board. He needs to play to the strength of our players. Our D was just as bad this year.

Wouldn't be surprised if you saw G target a few very specialized players, such as a 3 point specialist. I know the all-around guard has been his best friend, but having someone who could have helped shoot our way through zone defenses.

One would certainly hope / have assumed that G would have recruited a legitimate 3 - point specialist ( ie, Ethan Wragge - type ) long before now had one been available and interested in playing for La Salle.

Not trying to take anything for granted. Difference both players (Roberts and Price) both in their freshman years alone shot better than Garland did in any of his 4 years... Garland was that much of a handcuff on offense this year... Having two scorers on offense will open the defense again... Which will help the bigs in the paint and guards with penetration We saw that last season..

Look for G's recruiting targets to be "passion and energy" guy. Would help if he could shoot the 3 too. Hykos never heard G thought Lewis would start this year. If that's the case then that would have been G's biggest miscalculation this year.

Mills was a just a shooter nothing else.. He was easy to defend... Garland had no perimeter shot and teams just packed it in against him making the floaters more difficult than the previous year... Duren while shooting above 40% but didn't shoot from the perimeter as I would have liked... But he, like Garland, found finishing at the hoop to be difficult as center, forwards and other guards were allowed to play off of Garland giving Duren less room to finish around the basket.. Next year look for Roberts and Price to start scoring early based off of kick outs from Stukes and Shuler.. Stukes can finish around the basket while I am interested to see how Shuler will do as help defenders will adjust and stay out to watch the shooters like the previous year..

Who is the "dribbler"? Stukes is no Duren. Roberts is supposedly a "catch and shoot" guy. Price might have skills to put ball on the floor but he is no Garland at best. Haven't heard what is the plan for Shuler. Posters here have Shuler in penciled in but does G?

That should have been the plan for Mills THIS year with Duren and Garland but it didn't happen. Next year will be different? Hope so.

It wasn't just G who miscalculated this past season it was to one degree or other everyone who analyzed the team. I have stated before other than not being a good shooting team from the guard position Mills, Garland and Duren were a very small threesome who yes could dribble well but could give you next to nothing off the glass and were bullied by any player who had good size (height or weight). Next season Price and Roberts won't be bullied and both can give you solid shooting (and rebounding if called upon). If I were G I would always have one of those two players crashing glass with Wright and Zack to eliminate our rebounding problem. After the season Schuler had it is obvious he is a talent and will be surprised if he is not our point with Stukes and Lewis seeing time at the 1 and 2 positions. Price will probably always be 3 or 4 with Roberts being 2,3 or 4 position guy. I expect T.Washington to be first back-up behind Wright and Zack because he is every bit as big as Davis but has better hops and is more athletic. Lewis will get his playing time but if he doesn't improve on last season those minutes should be few. DJ is DJ and will see the floor a reasonable amount of time. That is how I see things which is usually wrong.

Do you do any research before making comments? I frankly shocked I am going to even bother and try and educate you if you are make comments like that.. Let me just conclude Garland with this.. Huge defensive liability whose only positive value was derived from offense of which he had one of worst shooting seasons in the history of the school's starting shooting guard.. First off did you notice how I said Garland's defender would help and not Mills' defender teams would sit on Mills allowing Garland and Duren to penetrate but the problem was the defensive players for a vast amount of time would just sit back and challenge the shot by Duren and Garland.. Duren had plenty of times this season where the defender played below the pick and he could have shot a 3 pointer but he didn't pull the trigger... He is more of a spot up shooter than maybe many on this board would like to admit... Giannini failed by being loyal and playing Garland too often.. He was a negative value player both in defense (which we knew from the season before) and actually below average in offense this year.. Which is amazing especially since the team was not out a lot of games that they lost.. STL, VCU... Garland had a good game vs VCU but like the STL game I would have preferred to see Lewis get more PT over Garland and moving Duren to the 2-guard.. At least Lewis produces positive value on the defensive end of the court..

Explorerman there you go telling the truth again. I don't want to get on T.Garland he just had a tough season but gave us great moments last season. Going forward in the long run this season may help next year's squad due to lower expectations. Still believe Washington, Schuler, Stukes, Price and Roberts is best group G has brought in his years at La Salle. This group gives you size, quickness and athleticism.

Read what I wrote. " Price might have the skills TO PUT THE BALL ON THE FLOOR but he is no Garland at best." That was the ONLY thing I referred on the concept of the dribble drive/one on one offense.
Lewis? The same guy who averaged a personal foul every 7 minutes and most of them 25 feet from the basket? The same guy who shot 26% from field and 20% from 3. Who looked for his own shot and not distribute the ball? Who had how many turnovers and forced shots? The same guy G took out of the rotation late in the season.
There is a stat coaches look at. PF's + TO's/ minutes play. It's called the bad play ratio. Lewis had 55 pf + 33 to's = 88/394 minutes. In A10 it was 36+19= 55/230 Garland had 47+52 = 97/916 minutes. In A10 it was 26+31= 57/484
Funny when G went to the box and one on L.Galloway, he used Garland and Mills not Lewis.

Jellybean I figured you were just talking ball handling skills and nothing else regarding Garland and Price. I agree with you Stukes is not Duren but if Amar can improve his shot he will have a chance to be a big contributor with his smooth playing skills and solid ball handling. Two players most interesting to me are Schuler and Washington because I believe Price and Roberts have already proven from their freshman seasons they are legit A10 players and possibly high level A10 players in a year or so.

Thank you. Roberts IMO is the surer thing track record wise. Price was to say the least a little disappointing at Auburn. Inconsistent. I believe Price has more upside. Both will be huge factors. The thing about Stukes is he was not the point guard at La Salle High. I am told he played more of the role on his AAU team. Duren was a point guard from the moment he was born. It will take time for Stukes. Stukes knock in HS was him missing key FT's at crunch time. Hopefully it's an anomaly. Washington is a shot blocker. I would hope G decides to use more full and 3/4 court pressure with him (shot blocker at the back of the press). Shuler is interesting situation. You tell Stukes to come to La Salle AND redshirt because you are going to "hand him the keys" like you did with Duren. How does that effect Shuler?

Price was going good last saeson until an injury set him back. My point next season is Schuler until he proves otherwise with Lewis as back-up. Amar can play 2 position along with Roberts or Lewis. Sculer has everything in a point that you want (speed, can shoot the three, canrun the team plus a great foul shooter). Starting five: Wright, Zack, Price Roberts and Schuler with Stukes, Washington, Peterson, Lewis and Brown as next five.

The thing about Stukes is he was not the point guard at La Salle High. I am told he played more of the role on his AAU team. I saw Stukes play 4 times his senior year at LCHS and twice the previous summer for his AAU team, and he played primarily the point in all six games. He rarely played off the ball.

I really hope Tony gets eligible. Having that third legit big (a real big-big, at that) will really make life easier up front when our Zack and Jerrell take the bench. And the shot blocking factor makes me giddy, imagining him and Steve out there together.
