There is some unfortunate sad news. A sophomore on the golf team passed away. Just saw on Facebook.

this is the old phi kap house, right? Sure looks like it 1801. I don't want to hi-jack this thread into arena discussion, but I'm going to (sorry). On the original master plan, the new arena was tentatively slated for Wister and Belfield. I am thoroughly opposed to that site, but maybe La Salle 'blessing' this project is a way to sooth any neighbors in that area before the arena is built? And this project could add some parking in that area for an arena. A question for the students on the board, with all the west campus expansion, are we alums on the board overlooking the possibility that a new arena could be built right on campus? What I'm asking is are there rumors about Olney/College Hall/Wister being torn down since whatever those buildings were used for has all been moved to new buildings on west campus? Just curious, though I honestly don't see College Hall or Wister coming down since (I think) they two of the original campus buildings.

this is the old phi kap house, right? Yeah. When I was there it was known as the rugby house, then just wister. The only real consistent party house my sophomore year: every thursday and Saturday. It's non row house status was what made it good. By my senior year though, I think it has basically been closed down.

I want to respond to belfield's post when I get home and don't have to type on my phone. But one more piece of trivia on the wister house: I was once bitten on the arm so hard it broke skin by a girl I was trying to hook up with at that house. I was dressed as a pimp at the time for Halloween. Interestingly, She was not dressed as a vampire, despite her proclivity towards biting.
We did not end up spending the evening together.

Outside investors building around La Salle is very good news. Expanding campus outward and spurring development adjacent to campus. Baby steps towards a safer/cleaner neighborhood.
The meeting where residents voiced their support for this Wister project was held at 431 East Locust. That area, west of the softball field, near the Philadelphia Tennis Club, and east of Miraculous Medal Shrine is pretty nice. Large historic stone homes etc. I remember when I was at La Salle I somehow ended up driving around that little section and I was really surprised, looked like Chestnut Hill. A far cry from Chelten and Chew - yikes.

La Salle's interactive campus map is down. They say they are updating changes to campus. Wow.
Also heard that McShain will probably come down. I assume College Hall consolidates some of the "old Library". What does that mean for Lawrence Building?

That house was home to some really alarming things when I was in school there.
Phi Kap and another frat were constantly fighting that entire year over some dumb, petty nonsense. I wasn't a part of that scene so I stayed away but La Salle is small and even smaller then so you did get to see and hear things.
I don't remember if this is the same night or different nights. I think they're different though. But here are two things that happened:
1) A few of my friends were at a party there in the basement. Some fight between the two groups started and in the process the lights went out or something along those lines. There was a big panic and people started a crowd rush to get out. My one friend twisted her knee up real bad and had to go to the ER because of it. They're lucky no one got killed.
2) This one was REAL bad. I was hanging out at LA with my friends and walking back to Neumann. All of these cops and ambulances started rushing past towards that area. There were all sorts of fights going on that week supposedly so I went to see what happened. It was CHAOS. So many people were around and fighting. And there was a bunch of broken stuff. I saw one guy -- he graduated but was still a cheerleader (!) -- kick out a car window. I'm not kidding.
Anyways, Mike Sielski wrote up a piece about what happened that night. One kid ended up with a major concussion or skull fracture -- something along those lines -- and was hospitalized for a few days. There were a bunch of arrests and a bunch of other injuries that went way beyond your usual college dust-ups.
If I'm remembering right, the one frat was down on Olney and their members marched down to that house and had various blunt objects with them. They essentially tried to storm it like it was a fort. The members of the house knew it was coming and had the place fortified and it was on. I heard a rumor -- who knows how true it is -- that kids who lived in the house were boiling water and tossing it from the second floor onto the other frat.
Mind you, there was a party inside with who knows how many people. And you can only guess how that went.
It was almost 20 years ago at this point so I don't remember all of the details. But I did see a kid kick out a window and remember someone being nearly killed.
Sorry if any of you were in either of the frats. But that stuff was really insane.

Hate to say it, but the reputation for that place didn't change at all until it was permanently shuttered. Similar insane issues occurred in the up until 2011 or so.
Think having apartment style rentals for off-campus housing available (versus row homes) is a big step forward for university growth. Shows that they're really sucking investors into the area.

I think everyone from our time had some good rugby/Wister stories. But the place was an absolute dump: smell of stale Natty ice, protruding nails around the back door (ruined a new pair of jeans that way, carrying a keg through), muddy, torn-up back lawn. But it was really the only place for freshman to who didn't know anyone to go on Thursday-Saturday nights.

I forget if the kid that was injured or the person that caused that injury is the son of a member of the Board of Trustees. The rumors of what went on that night were outrageous. I'd bet about 20% of what I heard actually happened, but it was the worst brawl I ever heard about while I was there as a student or worker.

That lawn... It would be one of the most uneven, treacherous pieces of land to have navigate in all of Olney. If I had a dime every time I saw someone fall in the mud.

I am not going to lie, I think this is a terrible idea. This has serious problems written all over it. If I was a student I would never live there, it sounds like you would get kicked out for some petty crap.

Oh I don't think that's the case at all. It's a private residence, the school won't have any control over who gets to stay and who doesn't. I think the community was concerned it might turn into a place where hundreds of students congregated and had parties. The quote in there I think refers to if people are being disruptive continually, they'll be evicted, like any nuisance situation.
Without it being built yet, it's tough to comment on, but the sense I get is that it will be a good place for students who want to move off campus in their Junior/Senior years, but either they or their parents aren't willing to take one of the only 2 options that leaves right now:
1. Move out of the immediate campus area entirely; or 2. Move in to a rowhouse somewhere just north of campus past Olney Avenue.
I lived on the 5700 block of N. Woodstock Street my Junior and Senior years. I convinced my parents to let me do it, but barely. A lot of people aren't able to do that, and especially if you're female, I'd understand why you wouldn't necessarily want to. On the other hand, I could see why living in the townhouses or La Salle apartments wouldn't be all that appealing as a 22 year old (especially Miguel, which has an SDR booth). This could provide a good half-step for some people.
Plus La Salle can get some money from this property for providing some security, and then afford to move more kids into student housing, which will make them more money.
Seems like a win-win to me.

That's the La Salle I have memories of, no matter how much they expand to the South and West, I really would hate to see that area disappear or be drastically altered. McShain can go, that building gives new meaning to outdated. It's twin- Benilde- came down like 6 years ago. Edit: On Wister, I fully support them no longer having classes there. (Stupid going up 9 flights of stairs to be on the 2nd floor). I'd just like it if they found a purpose for the floors above the bookstore.

A friend of mine was about to close the deal with a girl there one night, leaned on her, because he was so drunk, and they both slipped and fell into the bushes. One of the funniest things I've ever seen. He slept alone that night.

Speaking of the Ogontz Manor, weren't those unsightly buildings up for sale within the last decade? La Salle had some interest in purchasing?

I lived on the 5700 block of N. Woodstock Street my Junior and Senior years. That street will always have a special place in my heart as I lived in 5704 my Junior and Senior years. I had no problem selling the move there to my parents as they both grew up in Germantown, and it was substantially cheaper. I could see how some parents would be uneasy about it though, especially if they new your neighbors were reputed drug dealers. Nice people, but they made things a bit too interesting at times...

A bunch of those dudes trashed the Neumann lounge when I lived there and me and my friends were initially blamed for it. That was the closest I came into getting into real serious trouble.

Did St Alberts always have a wild reputation? By the time I got there, everyone knew that place was going to be reckless year in and year out. Self fulfilling prophecy? La Salle lost plenty of ceiling tiles that year. Actually all of them. I'll always remember opening my door to broken ceiling tiles littering the floor down the entire hall.

Nah, Alberts was nothing special from 99-03 anyway (I lived across the way in Bernie for 3 years), of the north dorms Hilary and Jerome were the wildest but the real excitement was often found in Neumann which was like the the wild west.

Neumann was "the freak dorm" when I lived there, largely due to its proximity to the Communication Center and those of us who were pretentious about movies and/or were hipster music fans.
Also, the access to the off-campus happenings at Bellfield were also important to the Neumann population. There used to be a parade of people marching back and forth there doing god knows what in the woods.
I only lived in North Dorms my sophomore year. I lived in St. Katherine's. There were a lot of honors freshman there, including one who led a singalong of "Closer To Fine" by the Indigo Girls right outside my door every single night. He was teaching himself guitar to that song. It was legitimately terrible. (Sorry if that's you.)
LA was absolutely insane my senior year. No guards plus a lot of seniors over the age of 21 led to a real good time. The Townhouses were also pretty wild, especially if you got in good w/ Jalil or had a buddy working North Dorms.
BTW, if any of you remember Jamar, the SDR with dreadlocks, he's a very successful comic book artist and a great guy.
