Losing a double OT to a decent team does not ruin my day-ok it did-but am concerned about the lack of interior defense and rebounding. Hope it was just a bad day.

Good write up, Coquii. Was it Richards(?) the big white boy bench sharpshooter, man he was lights out from three until the last 4 mins or so. Put a couple daggers in us.
That team took us out of our element by playing our same plan. I'm looking forward to playing a team with less speed and slower hands, let us get our perimeter play going.

I thought Khalid Lewis could have helped us today.

Just got back, made it a round tripper from NY today.
I couldn't wait to check the board after the game to read all the "now we'll never make the tourney this year" talk. Thanks to those who delivered.
I didn't read the game thread all the way through, but the key point in the game to me was the timeout called by G on the inbound play with 40 seconds left in OT. Just a really bad (and baffling) decision considering it was their last time out, with predictable results. In that spot just trust your guys and save the time out for when you get trapped, which is exactly what happened.

Disappointing loss but this was certainly a WAKE UP call for the team. They must defend and rebound better then they did today. The coaching staff has some work to do.

No matter what the pre-season expectations are for Manhattan, a team like La Salle - with the expectations for them, should NEVER lose to a Manhattan.
This is a bad loss.

Yes the rebounding was an issue and its just 1 game of course but the thing that did not speak well for us and dinged my confidence at this point----up by 3 with 35 sec left and possession in the first OT. In the drivers seat and the team then went on to blow it. Veteran guards looked bad at crunch time. This is their time to shine.... if you're really any good that is.
I hope our guys and the coaches address and fix this problem. We could see alot of close games like this. This is gut check stuff. Good guards execute and do not self destruct.
Hats off to Manhatan they were tenacious seem to beat us to most loose balls.

Got to get the rebounding issue in check. Ike Azotam is coming to town and he's a monster on the boards.

They aren't magically going to be average. Same guards plus Ramon. Sorry I can't gloss over how they layed an egg at crunch time today. As indicated hoping they see it and correct it. They blew a winnable game, 1 they were largely out played but winnable at that point. I thought our veteran guards were better than this also. I was frankly surprised by it.

The guards were smart and tough enough to come back from down 8 late. Would Khalid help? Beats me. But a few rebounds and close-outs on jump shots wins this.

We blow a winnable game every year. Every team does. I don't think you can stick this on our guards though. You can't stick this just on the guards though. So one game changing error occurred, while our bigs couldn't get a rebound if their life depended on it. Hell, Manhattan had more offensive rebounds than we had total rebounds... This isn't on the guards.

I did acknowledge the rebounding situation as being an issue in my first post. But felt most let down by the guard play at crunch time. And yes they played very well at other times. Yes, brought us back into the game from 8 points down. But ........I sure hope the coaches are not saying the way you closed out that 35 sec was excusable.

Thank you for calling them an ok team. People calling Manhattan a very good team are drinking kool aid to make the sting go away. I'm disappointed and that's because I think we should win that game at home. I'm allowed to think we should win that game, I will now move on from the loss. Not sure how anyone knows how good Manhattan is considering that was ga,e 1. Kind of like sju being #1 in the a10 last year. Let the season play out.

There wasn't one point during the entire game when I said "We should be blowing these guys out of the water." Their talent level was right there with ours.

I think they were very good. If nothing else, they posed as a very tough match up for us. Just one of those games where things didn't go our way.

Just back from the game. I will now regurgitate my thoughts on you all. I'm not going to check box scores or anything beforehand, so I don't retroactively change my opinion.
On the non-game stuff: 1. The crowd size was excellent. 10 minutes before tip its always pretty empty, then fills in. But today was much moreso. By National Anthem time, only section E2 was not mostly full. The first few rows of that were Manhattan fans, so my guess is that's where their allotment was. The students spread out to over there in the early part of the game, making the whole thing pretty much full.
2. Speaking of the students, after intros, they started the "All We Do Is Turn Up" chant but it was drowned out by that loud techno music they always play right before tip. Maybe they can go radio silent after introductions from now on, and let the students do their chant.
3. I liked the new video, highlighting a lot of last year's highlights, but I hope it doesn't permanently replace the previous intro video that focused on a lot of the history of the program. A combination of both would be ideal.
4. Agreed on the banner "ceremony." With no one out there to take part, they really should have just done it before the game. It looks good, and is the same size/color as previous banners. You could argue a Sweet 16 shouldn't be placed alongside a national Championship, but "1987 NIT Runner-Up" kind of dilutes the waters already. I'm fine with it all.

Now as for the game, most people have hit a lot of my points already, but I feel like I'm not totally in line with anything I've heard yet, although I take pieces from most parts.
Yes, it would appear Manhattan is a good team, and got the better of play for much of the afternoon. We should have won that game in the 1st OT, but guess what, we should have lost it in regulation. Both teams alternately choked away and stole that game through the first 45 minutes. I can't just look at what happened in 1OT without admitting we should have been dead long before that. In my hissy-fit throwing in the stands/ parking lot/ halfway through NJ, I said it would have been better had they just lost in regulation, to spare us the heartache. But that's really not true. They showed great fight, and that shot to tie it in Regulation by Garland was huge. Not that he needed it, but should be a confidence builder.
That said, while Manhattan is good, let's not overstate the case. We're going to play better teams than them, and we're going to have to beat some of them. They're good, probably an NCAA team and one of the better MAAC teams in recent memory- they ain't Kansas. Without overreacting, we really need to reach a point where we win that game. At home, against a "lesser" conference team, close late. It's a frustrating loss, made worse (in our minds) by it being the first game of the year.
I believe they really need to win the next 3 games. Quinnipiac and Siena at home, then @ Penn State. That would get them to 3-1 heading into the Paradise Jam. Those tournaments can get screwy, unpredictable things happen, I'd like to see us head in to it on a roll.
Actual Game thoughts:
1. The rebounding aspect has been beat to death, but it bears mentioning in every post. With our style, we're usually going to lose the rebounding battle. It's sort of the trade-off to a guard heavy, 3-point friendly team. That said, Manhattan grabbed I'd say 95% of the "50-50" balls today, and you can't have that. Some possessions it was 3 and 4 balls that were there for anyone to grab, and it was Green every time.
2. I thought Duren looked a bit skittish today. His shot wasn't dropping, and it sort of underlined that the team is at their best when he's facilitating, and using the dribble-drive. When he shoots a lot, it generally means things aren't going well elsewhere.
3. Wright and Zack did a good job in the 2nd of staying out of Foul Trouble. However, that may have been why they were so badly beaten on the glass. Simply put, they both need to stop getting 2 fouls before the 10 minute mark of the 1st Half. G had to play 4 guards and Rohan Brown the last 4 minutes of the 1st Half, and the only real offensive option was shoot a perimeter 3, and hope it goes in because there was no shot at a rebound.
4. I said it during the game, but this team misses Ramon Galloway. Nothing you can do about it, true, but his defense especially was missed today. There's always something to be said for having the best player on the floor be on your team, and most games last year, we did. The best player in the floor today was George Beamon.

Now, as for the board.
I think most people have a pretty balanced view of today, although everyone's mileage may vary. I really don't want to hear about our NCAA chances on November 9th, you'll drive us all crazy. You can think this was a bad loss, or not too big a deal, but still be reasonable, and most have.
That said, I'm seeing a few people who only pop up when things are bad doing their usual schtick. Get over it; it's not cute anymore. This team made the Sweet 16 eight months ago. If you're really so high-strung that this one game can cause you to become irate to pre-2011 levels, you need to find a new hobby. This one's not good for you. Or you're a troll, in which case logic will be of little use to you.
Good news is we get a quick turnaround, game in less than 60 hours. Basketball is back.

Quinnipiac and Siena at home, then @ Penn State. Good point on that shot to tie in regulation. May have put us through a ton more torment, but it could help in the long run. Still thought it would have been Tyreek taking the shot from outside, using Garland to draw defenders on a drive inside with a kick back out. Those next three are no cake walks either. Vaslos pointed out that fits that Azotam could give us, on a Quinnipiac squad that led the nation in rebounding last season. Get a good win on ESPN, build back that confidence, and set yourself up for a tough game against a much improved Penn State in Unhappy Valley.

I have no problem giving them credit but you can't call them a very good team it was game 1 of the season. The loss sucked just call it as it is.
