Good article. I couldn't agree more that this is major development if we can build that home court advantage. In my 4 years and since the atmosphere at Gola was hardly something the opposing team had to worry about. If we're going to play in a hole might as well embrace it and make the other team suffer for having to play there.

They would suffer far more if we didnt have commercials-or as often durind timeouts; I remember a time when timeouts were the prime cheering and heckling moments. Rollie hated timeouts- he knew Screamers venom was coming. If they need $, let them paint the floor with our corporate sponsors logos but let the fans dominate the arena.

Great article. I can only remember Gola being like that a handful of other times -- the first few games during its opening season, a few heated big 5 games, one or two games after we beat St. Joe's and were throwing some haymakers, Florida State and the NIT.
This was the first one that we actually won, if memory serves correct.
I think yesterday there was about 3 minutes left or so and we hadn't pulled away yet. The crowd started to do the Seven Nation Army chant (which looks like their favorite, as it should be since The White Stripes are true American icons) but instead they had some sort of in-crowd quiz. It just killed the crowd dead.
This is all new to everyone, though. We just got the videoscreens and that technology last season. We just got good last season. We just got fans yesterday.

Also, one of the things about Gola is that it doesn't take a lot there to make a lot of noise because of the wood bleachers and acoustics. The kids yesterday came up with some new defense chant (not the usual "DEE-FENSE") thing but something else along those lines. There was also an attempt at a "L-A-S-A-L-L-E" chant and I definitely heard a few old-timers do the fight song at the end of the game, too.
Screamer -- you should try and coordinate with the cheerleaders on the We Fight Hard chant, since they have the placards for that this year. A man of your repute should be able to get that going!
I think they also need to come up with a way to reconfigure the end of the game when we win. I love the idea of the players at courtside saluting the fans but human nature dictates that people just want to take off after a sporting event. They should play the fight song after a win, let the kids do the handshake, and then play it again a minute or two later.

Nice piece. Thanks for writing
Given this great turnout it would have been awful had we lost this thing.
First game, we are a work in progress (WIP) for sure. Nice to be a WIP that brings home the V. With unexpected guys (Zack and DJ) contributing vitally to the win it has to be a confidence builder for all about future prospects.

We won't know what to do when we win so long as the only two traditions we have are leaving before the buzzer to beat the exit traffic, and playing journey when we lose.

what happened at the end of the game saturday? Did people file out with 30 seconds left or did they stay? You can't fault people for wanting to beat the rush, you really can't. It's a shame that they don't want to be there till the buzzer but people do have lives to continue on with. Being the good Catholic I am, maybe they wanted to make it to the 5:30 Saturday mass at home? It happens at all kinds of sporting events, especially in the regular season.

I think the early exiting has more to do with there only being 1 way to leave the building more than anything. I can't begrudge people for not wanting to stand in line for 15 minutes to get out of your section, especially when the game is in hand.
Great turnout for a really fun day. But someone needs to fix the drink stations at the homecoming tent though, what a disaster. The long lines are bad enough and then they ran out of beer which almost caused a riot.

I agree with this 100%. I stay to the end because I am a diehard fan. However, the casual fan does not want to put up with the exiting of Gola which is a giant cluster that mirrors leaving Hayman when they allow you to park in the lot during break. One way in and out creates problems. I can understand some that don't want to deal with that to some degree.

no one can say La Salle people don't know how to party.
I still don't understand why the other doors don't open at the end of games to allow people another way out. What's the big deal about them opening up?

no one can say La Salle people don't know how to party. I still don't understand why the other doors don't open at the end of games to allow people another way out. What's the big deal about them opening up? the emergency exit was open for students on Saturday. The ushers didn't attempt to block it like they often do. the reason it has been blocked in the past may be because it is difficult to secure. When they've had lights out it is also very difficult to see in there. It is usually a steady stream of people and they can suck the life out of the place in a 3 point game with under a minute left. It also gets confusing for us when most people are already leaving and there is no momentum to start a fight song tradition and the words aren't on the video board or known by hardly anyone that's not a cheerleader. the only momentum is toward the exits and the admin seems to like that so that they can turn the lights off faster and save money.
