(OK, technically we all migrated over in early October of 2012, and even more technically Joe started this site in 2010 and we tested it out, but it never really gained a foothold, but close enough)
The Hawk Hoop Club situation, which I was just made aware of today, got me thinking (I don't have much detail, but the forum was shut down, and they're all filtering into a scout board, which is half free, half pay. Anyone with more details let me know). We've been on this board about a year now, which also coincides with the best 12 months this program has seen since at least 1969. I think it's gone great so far. We've had some bumps in the road, but overall, I was very pleased.
Having the ability to ban people has been great. I've honestly not had to do it too much, but I think the threat of it has been enough to dissuade most trolls from signing up, knowing their reign will be shot-lived. Keep in mind we had a HUGE surge in people signing up in March of this year for some reason I can't remember, and almost all of it was positive. We had our usual run of Temple trolls before that game, and I was able to suspend registration on the board for that day, essentially nipping the problem in the bud. Furthermore, we've had a big increase in the number of visiting teams fans making actual contributions, rather than just a few lonesome clowns causing problems.
I want to thank everyone for being so cooperative. I admittedly know nothing about any sort of technical thing, and Joe has been a great help in that regard. Joe's busy with Philahoops and also having a real job and probably a life, so he could very well have just left us on our own, but I thank him for continuing to stay involved. Every poster has been very helpful with making suggestions, following whatever few rules I've put in place, and reporting any problematic behavior to us in an appropriate fashion, with very few exceptions.
As we get ready for a new season, I'd like anyone's feedback on how things have gone, and suggestions for this year. For the moment, I'm NOT referring to design or "technical" things, but rather board culture, threads, etc. For instance, I removed the profanity filter at the beginning of the Tournament, and I think that's been fine. There hasn't been a run on f-bombs. But I'm 27, and admittedly curse like a sailor in real life. I understand if people would like to see if put back in.
Most substantially, I'm talking about the actual discussions: Are we good with how the Game Threads are done? should we use The Shoutbox instead? Should we have individual weekly threads for things like RPI Standings, Bracket projections, etc. or use 1 big monthly or season-long post? Should we make catch-all threads for things like "New Arena Talk" or just as they come up?
Those are just some examples, anything else anyone has ideas on, please feel free to put them here. THANKS!
