When did St. John's stop mattering? Post Carnaseca? I grew up ~75 miles outside the city and they were as close as it came to a local team.

I don't think they ever mattered as much as history has pretended they have (I'm talking Big East era on, I have no clue about the 40's).
Mike Jarvis had them in the Elite 8 in 1999, but even then, I don't remember them being huge, maybe that weekend. It's just not a college town. Would be good to see them stay good again, but who knows.
...I either love or hate those uniforms but I legitimately can't figure out which one yet,

Can't say I disagree with the article, in many cases the classic uni's are classic for a reason though the addition of the skyline still keeps SJ's staple look.
I don't even know if most people would recognize Philly's skyline?

The interesting thing is usually the manufacturers have a template and all teams work off a similar concept. We'll have to see if it's a St. John's thing or a Under Armour thing.

St. John's was huge in the mid-80s in the heyday of Chris Mullin and Walter Berry. They sold out the Garden pretty regularly during that era, and the combination of them being a top-ranked team plus the Knicks being pretty lousy had a lot to do with it.
I doubt very much we'll see anything like it again. The allure college game just isn't the same since most great players are one and done.
That Jarvis team was very good but got no buzz up here at all. The thug element on that team was probably the main reason why, plus their run was very short-lived.
