Back again for another year of weekly RPI updates letting us know where everyone stands. Once again, I'll be using realtimerpi.com. I'm getting an early start on this, a Friday, so that we know where everyone ended up finishing the year last year so we can compare early on. As always, the early RPI standings can be ridiculous to follow because of the giant swings but still they're fun, especially in a year where we have tournament aspirations.
Final 2011-12 RPI Standings
20. Temple (0-0, 0-0) 31. St. Louis (0-0, 0-0) 38. VCU (0-0, 0-0) 41. Xavier (0-0, 0-0) 69. St. Joe's (0-0, 0-0) 73. St. Bonaventure (0-0, 0-0) 77. UMass (0-0, 0-0) 81. Dayton (0-0, 0-0) 87. La Salle (0-0, 0-0) 109. Duquesne (0-0, 0-0) 116. Butler (0-0, 0-0) 126. Richmond (0-0, 0-0) 167. Charlotte (0-0, 0-0) 187. GW (0-0, 0-0) 240. Fordham (0-0, 0-0) 256. Rhode Island (0-0, 0-0)

Looks about right to me... 4th place to 8th place in the league is going to be wide open for any of those teams listed.

I believe that some of these internet sites use an average over the last 5 years as their preseason rating. Don't get excited til they have 5-6 games under their belt.

Just keep winning and the rest will take care of itself

Agreed. I'm going to wait a week to let the RPI shake out. With the marathon going on and some teams not even playing yet, I'll start posting the rankings once we get everyone at least a game in.

Those Blue Hens won at Virginia last night ...59-53. Does that help our RPI. Was that a fluke? ( extreme lack of knowledge here.)

Opponent record is 50% of the RPI formula.
We can help our RPI with quality wins, but the quality of our opponents wins is useless. The frequency of their wins helps. Go Delaware!

OK. Maybe the Hens are better than I thought and beating them is a very positive sign. \ Thanks for the explanation.....

It helps in that in all likelihood we will be a bubble team at which point, te number of wins against top 25,50,100 RPI teams comes into play

How is RPI calculated this early in the season?

Or the fact that Virginia was without their best player and only dressed 8 players.. that could have had an effect

How is RPI calculated this early in the season? The ones that show us tied in first place are only using the current season math which is practically meaningless on such a small sample size because the teams that we have played have to be rerated as the season progresses. The ones that show us in 80th place are using 5-year trends for RPI which are also meaningless at this point because the rosters have changed. Pick your poison.
