May not be the best matchups RPI wise but for potential wins wise I like these very much I expect GW to be a little better and SJU about the same, so those two aren't RPI killers. I don't have high hopes for Bonaventure or Duquesne though.

SJU (of PA) @ Palestra once and Gola or Hagan for other game?

Well, if we played them once this year, it would have been a SJU home game and it would've been at the Palestra. So I would assume it's their "turn" to give up a true home game. But honestly, I couldn't fault them for not wanting to play 1 game at Gola and one game at the Palestra.
Hopefully this doesn't end up meaning no game at the Palestra. Good match-ups otherwise.

I have to agree. I do think however GW could be pretty solid this year. Just picked up Maurice Creek from Indiana who was great freshman year but was plagued with injuries. He supposedly recovered and wants more playing time could be a big contributor to them along with Armwood.

Can't ask for much better than that IMO. St. Louis, VCU and Mason at home too. Just win baby.

Yeah, this looks like a pretty great schedule in terms of maximizing in conference wins.

VCU looks pretty rough....leading the league may be a real possibility.

This can be our conference now. Let's grab the bull by the horns and make it our conference.

God I hope there's at least one game at the Palestra.
Anyone going to the golf outing Monday? Find out the deal on the SJU game ASAP.

Dayton schedule is also loaded in great home games. I am a little concerned about them, GM and GW.

It's already been said, but RPI strength isn't outstanding but the potential to rack up wins is there. Glad we aren't going to St Louis again, feel like that's a bad place for us.
Dayton, Richmond, and UMass on the road are no easy matchups. Gotta come out firing or you can very easily drop games to those teams. And GW will be very improved too.
Side Note - Neat they stuck VCU and Richmond together for a home and home though. Rivalry time.

Why not TWO games at The Palestra?

Actually, I kind of want the game at St. Joe's to be at Hagan while ours is at The Palestra just for banner fodder.

Kick their asses at Hagan in front of the SJU (of PA)hardcore season ticket holders.

Conference record 13-3 if we play up to our talent level, 11-5 if we slip a little and 9-7 if we are having a bad season. Me says 12-4 for a second place finish and a future 2014 NCAA berth.

I look forwards to kicking saint joes and temples asses in philadelphia no matter where we play this year.
I like the 12-4 record behind UMASS. UMass set themselves up, dont see them losing more than 1 game away. Think due to the schedule VCU could fall to third.

While it's true this weak conference schedule maximizes La Salle wins, I'd have rather played say VCU or St. Louis twice instead of Duquesne or St. Bonaventure. If you beat either of them so what, if you lose it hurts (like a certain early season loss last year).

I think St. Bonnies might be decent this season. Duquesne is going to be pretty awful again though.

Some Hawks are already gearing up for a double beating by La Salle, but I think they are undefeated* or something crazy like that against the Big5 at Hagan. They even took Temple there last year. So the pessimist in me says that Hawks could steal one from us, especially if they manage to get one home and one neutral game out of this season like Penn did that time we played them under "neutrality" three years in a row at the Palestra. Get ready for Martelli complaining about how we went 7-1 against this spread and his team should go 3-5, even if two of those games are between us, he will only blame scheduling for that disparity between our records. Or, he always has 2004 to hang his hat on. hawkhoopclub.proboards.com/thread/13125/lasalle

I can't blame either team for not wanting to play 1 game @ The Palestra, and 1 at the other team's gym. I hope they can be pragmatic and agree to play once at the Palestra.
Or maybe bring back the old-school Palestra doubleheader, but make it a baseball style double-header. Go in to the locker room, have a meal, fans can go get re-loaded back up, and play the nightcap.

Honestly I am not concerned about duquense or bonnies because this team shouldn't lose to them. If they do they do but keep in mind CCSU was the second game of the season and we didnt have Garland. Those should be four easy wins for us plus we either beat VCU or SLU at home that be nice. Love to beat UMass away get some payback.

I don't have high hopes for Bonaventure or Duquesne though. St Joe's and GW will both be solid teams this year so playing them twice is fine. But the league didn't do La Salle any favors pairing them up with the other two. Playing one of them twice is fine, but having to play both of them twice could really hurt La Salle when it comes time for the selection committee to make their at-large picks. At the end of last season, a home win over #231 Duquesne dropped La Salle eight spots (37 to 45) in the RPI. Imagine what having to play two 200+ RPI teams late in the season will do. Based on the numbers, there's a good chance that SBU and Duquesne will be the 12th and 13th place teams in the league. They both took huge hits from graduation and/or transfer, and because of that, will depend heavily on multiple newcomers to step in and have a significant impact. Maybe one or both will surprise but typically that isn't the case. Every other team in the league returns most of their core players. I thought the league would do what they've done in the past and try to balance out these partners by putting the league into tiers and having everyone get matched up with one team from each tier. But for some reason, La Salle got two bottom tier teams. It's really not all that bad a thing that La Salle doesn't have to play SLU or VCU twice, but the league should have matched them up with either Richmond, Dayton, or George Mason instead of SBU or Duquesne. Hopefully the Bonnies and Dukes will be better than expected.

This is sort of off-topic, but with regards to the tournament next year, it would be nice to actually see us make some noise in the A-10 tournament, and seal the deal that way. It's been 5 years since we actually won a game at the venue most of the tournament was being held at. Won a few opening round, campus site games, and got a few byes, true, but how about stringing some consecutive day wins together.

If I'm La Salle I want to play as many games at the Palestra on a weekend as possible this season - I have to think that a decent opponent on a weekend at Gola will sell the place out, and based on that logic, I decent opponent at the Palestra could draw significantly more revenue/fans.
I will bet my paycheck that a weekend tilt of SJU v La Salle will sell out in 2014 if we decided to play there si instead of keeping the gate for 3,200 fans, why not keep the gate for 6,500? I know the rental fee is pricey, but even if it's a bottom-line break-even scenario, the non-financial benefits of giving the Hawks a beating in front of 6,000 of your own fans (500 SJU fans) would be well worth it.
Or, maybe if the league gurantees we get to play SJU twice next season we do a gig where we play at Hagan and the Palestra this year where the Palestra gate/expense is split and then next year we play Gola and Palestra. If it's a National TV game, i would think the league would like the idea of showing a packed 6,500 seat venue instead of a 3,500 seat venue.

The schedule is good for wins but not for RPI. We need to win as many OOC games against quality teams as we can to pump the RPI. I'd rather take SLU over SBU. I can take a road loss at SLU, but Olean is always a tough place to win and we could be set up for a "bad" loss on the road at SBU as a result.
Last time we had an on campus game with SJU was when Hagan opened and they steered the game from the Palestra to Hagan. Given this, I'd be in favor of pushing for one game at Gola and one at the Palestra this year followed by one game at Hagan and one at the Palestra next year and so on.
Something tells me Phil will come up with some reason not to go along with this. We shall see.

Last season's game sold out. My wish is that both games this season and going forward continue to be played at the Palestra. Play one in early-mid January and the other the last week of the season. It makes sense for both financial and traditional reasons, especially with both schools having limited capacity in their on-campus facilities. The January game will have the usual buzz that comes with a Big 5 game at the Palestra along with the excitement of getting off to a good start in the A10 schedule. The late season game more than likely will have a huge impact on the A10 standings and has the potential to be another Palestra madhouse. I would not be surprised if Martooni is pushing to have at least one game at Hagan this year (since this would have been their home game if there was only a single game). He knows if both games are at the Palestra, the chances that the Hawks will get swept are significantly higher, and that would just kill him. That would be something if Phil was pushing for one game at Hagan, because that would be a complete reversal of his stance that all Big Five games should be played at the Palestra (which he flip-flopped on last season when they played Nova and Temple at Hagan). I vote for both games at the Palestra for as long as they have to play each other twice a season.

I would hate for us not to have a St. Joe's/La Salle game at the Palestra. That game is the second best rivalry game in the city and trails only The Holy War in terms of interest. Heck, with how resurgent our program is, it's almost on par.
The atmosphere last season was as good as it gets in college basketball. It was spine-tingling. The dunk near the end of the game was amazing. I still remember some old-timers holding up a La Salle banner right when The Hawk Is Dead chant started.
The St. Joe's/La Salle game needs a name badly. I personally like The Brothers' War but I need someone with some swag to make it stick.
