I don't believe so. I think Ramon's NBA prospects are only going to improve with a few years of good play in Europe. I hate to bring his name up, but his path may be similar to that of another former explorer playing in the NBA finals next weekend.

I think Ramon would be well-served going abroad and getting some money to help out his family. He'll get in a high-level league. He could also light up at summer league.
We know he can play and has NBA-level athleticism. He's just a bit short for NBA standards (measured at 6'1" at the combine) and has that "isn't quite a PG and isn't quite a SG" pigeonhole.
Fran Fraschilla (who knows international hoops like no other) tweeted a few months back that Ramon was going to end up on a team like the Spurs or OKC after being in Europe for a bit. I could completely see that being his career arc.
Either way, 55 will forever be one of my favorite college basketball players.
I would love it if he could be at Homecoming.

It looks like Ramon is in Chicago according to a retweet he put up from CJ McCollum. Ramon's there with CJ, Anthony Bennett, Muscala and a bunch of other high-level guys.
He's on the radar.

I'm sure he's on the radar, but he is best served as a PG in the NBA which means he needs to work on that part of his game - as a SG he's too short but he could thrive as a PG that can get to the basket when needed but can facilitate more often than not.
He's also athletic enough defensively which will be a plus, but his biggest hurdles is the 6-1 height.

There's a lot more leeway for guys who come off the bench to not have a totally defined position. A guy who does a little a bit of everything, and can defend like Ramon can, can be a big asset to a team that has plenty of established guys around him on a 2nd unit.
I agree that his best path is probably a few years in a top European league, but I think he's got a real good shot to be in someone's camp come the fall, although chances of making a roster, and sticking, don't seem great right now.

You wonder if he'll have to remake his jumper as well. Coming from that low is going to be an even bigger chore at the next level.

Agreed, but there's a handful players with some absolutely atrocious shooting form that take it from low like that up there. Who knows, kinda separates you sometimes, but I see where it could bite you in the rear.

Ramon tweeted that he's in Dallas, and tweeted a picture of the Mavericks logo on the carpet in their locker room.
Is there something in Dallas right now? Or is he maybe meeting/ working out for the Mavs?

That is for Ramon's pre-draft work out with the Mavericks.

Ramon has practiced with a number of teams. He currently is with the Mavericks and I know from his twitter he already worked out with the Bulls. According to Dan Grzybowski twitter Ramon has worked out or is on schedule of working out with the Bulls, Mavs, Pacers, Bucks and Wizards.

Does the NBA draft still function where the 2nd round is almost a curse where its all stashable euros and non-guaranteed deals (where a player would be better getting his choice)?

Once you get into the 2nd half of the 2nd round, and it's the playoff teams picking, you are correct MisterD. A team like the Heat or Thunder can afford to gamble on a European guy who may not come over for 3 years, because they don't have rotation minutes available for a 20 year old college player anyway right now.

How deep in the second round was Rasul Butler. He's had a respectable NBA career. And it continued past it:
(from Wikipedia) "On January 18, 2013, Butler joined the Tulsa 66ers of the NBA Development League.[6] He was subsequently named the 2013 Impact player of the Year which is awarded to a player who joined an NBA D-League team mid-way through the season and making the greatest contribution following his in-season acquisition."

Rasual was REALLY late in the draft. I mean almost not drafted at all late. I remember the CSN feature on him from drafty night and he watched the draft alone in his room waiting and waiting for his name to be called and then it was called by the Heat. He was 53rd overall which at that time I think left only a few teams remaining to pick, Maybe like 3.

it's the same year the Sixers selected Jiri Welsh and Sam Clancy....clearly Butler would not have been a fit with your team, your town, your 76ers.

oh, but how could I forget, they traded Welsh to Golden State and wound up with John Salmons ultimately from San Antonio.
Looking more at the 2002 draft, Rasual probably had one of the top6 or 7 careers for guys in that class. There's a lot of players in that draft I couldn't stand in the NBA. I would put Rasual's career up there in the same group as Caron Butler and Carlos Boozer. The only guys that really did better were Tayshaun prince, Amare Stoudamire and i guess Yao Ming

Was going to post a separate thread, but am tired and lazy.
A question for those of you around longer than me:
How were we so bad with a guy -Rasual Butler- who went on to get drafted and turn into a solid pro with some real longevity? It looks like his years were the least inept in our decade plus of ineptitude, but still, we couldn't manage a .500 season with a soon to be pro on the team?

Rasual was a scoring machine who did almost nothing at the other end of the floor, plus there was no depth on the roster. The starters played nearly the whole game, every game.

It looks like his years were the least inept in our decade plus of ineptitude, but still, we couldn't manage a .500 season with a soon to be pro on the team? This was the story of La Salle basketball for a few years: one, maybe two guys on each team with simply outstanding talent, but the rest of the roster often just not scholarship-worthy...poor athleticism, terrible BBall IQ's, behavioral problems, bad attitudes, you name it. I have often said that as much as I wanted Kobe to make good on his long shot interest in La Salle, it actually would have been just as bad for the program long-term. Sure, we would have made a hell of a lot of noise for a year or two, but the program would have somehow managed to underachieve. It is inevitable. And Speedy would have parlayed all of that noise into another five or six years.
