Look, the neighborhood is not great. But it's not awful either. What most of those people are saying when they say "The Campus is Awful" is" "I sure do see a lot of black people when I drive through that area."

What most of those people are saying when they say "The Campus is Awful" is" "I sure do see a lot of black people when I drive through that area." Exactly. Thanks for saying it. I laugh because people use the terms "campus" and "neighborhood" interchangeably. Uber Street is one of the nicest streets in the city in my opinion. There was a funny story about the Duquesne football broadcast team driving to play La Salle. The one announcer was driving and the other announcer was sleeping in the car. When they woke the guy, he said he thought he was some rural place. Landlocked was another joke. The Armory is in talks. Quietly La Salle has acquired property around the school near Clarkson Street. Couldn't do that when David Cohen was alive. B&G will be completely gutted starting any moment now. In August, when school starts, it will have a completely modern look and new facade facing Olney Avenue. Improvements will occur very soon near Softball field I'm told. Told another project regarding student housing is also slated for this Summer. From a very reliable source, he told me that La Salle applications were +5% from the previous year and this was months before the success in the NCAA's. SJU was down between 3-5%. Gwyneed Mercy was down and Holy Family was down 15%. La Salle had FOUR Fulbright Scholars this year. How many did SJU have?

Well, there's a ton of litter and a lot of the buildings aren't well maintained. So there are some visual signs that the neighborhood isn't the best. But there are much worse and I suspect that a dirty, poorly maintained white neighborhood wouldn't get the same reaction.

Yeah, I mean the neighborhood ain't great. I think some people overstate their case when they make it seem like nothing is wrong. A lot of it depends on streets. My street, the 5700 block of Woodstock, was pretty dumpy and had a lot of garbage. But if you go one street over, you get places with well maintained fronts, clean, etc. It totally depends.
But the average 45 year old St. Joe's alum commenting on that message board, how much time do you think he's spent on 20th and Olney? Any at all? Has he read the crime statistics for the area? No. He's got no firsthand knowledge of anything other than there's a lot of black people when he drives by.

Speaking of middle age Hawk people.....One of my favorite Hawk incidents.....I was at a South Jersey pizza shop a few years ago picking up a pie. The middle aged woman working the counter was wearing a SJU of Pa sweatshirt. As she brings the pizza out, I innocuously mentioned that I attended La Salle. With a straight face and in total seriousness the woman says, “F&*ing sucks to be you than doesn’t it.” I dropped the pizza on the floor, started flapping my arms like everyone’s favorite rip-off mascot and walked out. I never went back. I still get a good laugh when I think about that.

Love how St. Joe fans like to rip where La Salle is and yet didn't they have students kidnapped a couple of years ago? Also I remember reading a street corner near their campus was voted the most dangerous in the city a few years ago as well. They are right on City Line Avenue but it gets seedy pretty fast when you go off campus.

Man, I hope the St. Joseph's of PA version of me doesn't read this thread. I'm seeing some absolutely abysmal spelling and grammar.
(Yes, I'm that type and I usually let it go during basketball talks, but academics are strongly tied in here.)

This thread has careened completely out of control. Most people only know La Salle's campus as the stretch they drive by on Olney Ave and have never actually been "on" the campus. I distinctly remember the 1st time Nova came to play at Gola Jay Wright walking around campus and commenting how remarkably nice the campus was and how suddenly you feel insulated from the surrounding area.
I think la Salle's campus is really beautiful, especially in the spring and summer, with some terrific views. No, the neighborhood is not exactly desirable overall but there are some nice pockets (Someone mentioned Uber street) but it's a product of the area's economics and demographics. There aren't a lot of high-paying jobs in the immediate area so there's not going to be a lot of disposable income for property maintenance. Plus, the city is responsible for the care of the common areas and if you aren't familiar with our city's efficient operation.....
As for the acceptance rates, i have to think that the long term plan is to get more and more kids into the school and generate some more interest and ultimately make yourself a little more selective. Plus it helps fund the enhancements Jellybean mentioned.
Anyway, I think the major driving force is the SJU fans are upset their glory ahs faded and that we were the pride of the collegel hoops banner in the city for a stretch this March.

Dear god, we created a monster...
On that note, I think Martelli and his staff are way off by not recruiting heavily in their backyard like we've been. I'm not complaining, but I understand why Hawk Hill is upset over this.
