I'm flattered by the kid, but I have to agree with Mister D.

Vinales is certainly athletic enough to play defense, which is 80% desire imo. Garland had pretty much the same reputation, that of a pure scorer, and was doing a fair job at the close of the season. Two things would scare me with this signing, the first being he would have to fit the role assigned. The 2nd worry is that G is finally attracting a different type of recruit. Despite rational on the board, recruits may not view it that way and this really could cost us a pretty good guard or two. We lost a kid outside of Memphis yesterday to UMASS. I think that G got involved late. He was 6'5 guard who is hoping to become a doctor and really seemed quite intelligent in his interview. Just a two star, but attracting bigger interest late. I think he may be a good pickup for them, but really right down G's alley. I have to believe Gis going to screen Vinales pretty hard. The one thing about a soph transfer is that he's unlikely to go that route again, therefore making him a good "listener".

The great thing about the teams run this year is that it has opened doors to players that wouldn't have given us a second look in the past. Look who G has landed ( Roberts, Washington and Stukes )and look at the players he is recruiting (to numerous to mention but you get my point). G will probably land one more guard this year if he is satisfied in the caliber of person and player. Next recruiting period (Nov.-2013) G will probably be looking for two more guards and one 6-6 to 6-7 swingman.

Vinales is a very talented kid, and if he's willing to share the ball, would be a nice piece at La Salle. As far as his production against the better teams, I think you have to take into account that their scouting reports all revolved around stopping him. At La Salle, that wouldn't be the case and while he won't get to shoot as much, he'll probably find himself getting many more open looks and not having to work so hard to get them. Think this is pretty accurate. But as MisterD said, I think there's more to be excited about a player transferring down from a BCS conference than going up. Either way, I think he'd be a fine piece. But I don't know if he fits G's ideal player mold - all he does is score. He doesn't have assist totals, he doesn't rebound particularly well, and he isn't a defensive shutdown man either. I'm only going on stats and when I saw him rip the Explos, but I'd think G would want more of multi-tooled guy, especially with Dj's departure. I realize Vinales put up his numbers against lesser competition, but his averages compare very favorably with the returning La Salle guards. He averaged more assists than any of the La Salle guards, including Ramon. If he can cut down on his turnovers, which he probably would since he wouldn't be the focus of opposing defenses anymore, he'd fit in pretty well. I didn't see him play enough to know how good or bad his defense was, but if he wants to get on the floor at La Salle, he'll have to be willing to do it. He certainly has the tools to be a good defender. Vinales - 2.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.1 assist/turnover ratio, 1.4 steals, 36.5% from three Mills - 2.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.9 assist/turnover ratio, 1.0 steals, 37.9% from three Garland - 2.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.5 assist/turnover ratio, 1.2 steals, 27.8% from three Duren - 2.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.7 assist/turnover ratio, 1.7 steals, 39.0% from three I don't care what school a player comes from. If he can play, he can play. Like someone else posted, Xavier got solid years from two guys who transferred up from Monmouth and Towson, and I think it's safe to say that Vinales is as good or better than both of them. If G thinks he's good enough to play at La Salle, then I'm all for it.

Can we still take Vinales now, given DJ's return?

And I agree. We've gotten away from the "no talking about guy's personal lives" rule a bit too much around here. Again, I'm not saying you are making it up, but you're not going to be able to produce any proof either. I'm not going to delete or locks the thread, but I'd really like this kind of stuff to stop.
If it gets reported on somewhere: different story.

I think that this was a try at humor, based on the unfounded DJ post (ie: We'd rather lose Dunn than DJ).

I was kidding as I was referencing the talk earlier in the week. I didn't want to explain my joke last night as it took the fun out of it. I wouldn't want to lose either guy. I apologize for the confusion. I will use a smiley face next time!

Mother of Taylor Dunn's girlfriend (LaS women's team member) was awesome at the A-10 Brooklyn tourney game vs Butler. Gave the refs and Rotnei Clarke harsher verbal abuse than I did. Props to Taylor's academic accomplishments, called out by Dr. G at the banquet. Long time forum follower, first time poster. Probably my last until Klitschko-Povetkin fight at the Ogontz Armory end of August.

Any chance a scholarship opens up? Seems a shame to lose a kid with Vinales's talent, and I doubt he is going to pay his own way for a year.

Unless someone announces a transfer, no. And we're getting past the window when players announce departures. 350+ transfers are looking for new homes this season, and I wouldn't want last pick out of those numbers.

We have no room at the inn.
The program has come a long way since G took over and couldn't get kids to come to La Salle. Now we are turning away good players after a Sweet 16 appearance. Nice problem to have.
I see ex-recruit Dominique McKoy committed to Duquesne. As I was reading the story I couldn't help but think how he felt. Turns down La Salle to go to Rhode Island and his coach is fired. He then goes JUCO and is sitting in his dorm watching us play with a chance to go to the Elite 8. Regrets. Crazy stuff.

You never know how things will turn out. Yes. I mentioned him last month. G tried his hardest to get him to commit. He was at the Nova game which we lost by a point or so at Gola during Murray's last year. I remember someone telling me if he didn't commit in that environment he was never going to commit. Kid looks to be ending up at Mount St. Mary's. It is true that sometimes it is good to miss out on kids you had hoped to get.

Another kid who considered La Salle and ended up at URI was Jonathan Holton. He got kicked out of URI for secretly videotaping him and a girl having sex, also went to a Florida juco, and just committed to that three ring circus going on down at West Virginia. Imagine having to coach this kid, Murray, and Juwan Staten. Huggins thought last season was bad.
