DurenDuren, if I skipped class or study hall (which I didn't even have mandated, of course), I could still get a scholarship or financial aid at another school. No reason a player shouldn't be able to do the same and no reason a school should be able to decide "we don't want you but we don't want anyone else to have you either". That's creepy boyfriend stuff. Completely agreed. But I'm going to assume you weren't an NCAA DI athlete, as well. He should be eligible for scholarship/financial aid, but I don't think he should be given a waiver from Clearinghouse. He has the right to play ball elsewhere, but because his actions had forced the hand of UMass, I think this should be treated as opting to transfer on your own part versus the St Louis player who had his scholarship pulled to create room so they could be players on the transfer market. This happened because he violated team or university policy, which is as good as contract. I can't imagine the UMass staff really wanted to boot Morgan, given that they were serious contenders with him. Without, much more of an uphill battle. I'm not arguing scholarships, or if players should get paid (that's a whole different battle I'm not interested in discussing). I'm arguing eligibility, and I don't think he should get a free pass because he can't get his act together long enough to stick at a school. Getting someone to pay for his education is okay with me.

A lot, not all, of these kids couldn't go for 1,2,3,4 yrs at most colleges based on their academic achievements. If a sport gets them a sniff to show what they can do, the trade off of being fed/housed/travel/coddled and maybe going to a few classes with TONS of academic help/plagiarism/chicanery is a reasonable trade-off for the possible win-fall of a pro contract. And add in little or no debt. So some want to pay these kids? He11 no. I say we make them apply based on their academics and then lets see what happens (whatever happen to the well-rounded student/athlete)...............yep,there goes the TV contracts/networks (although the level of play has gone down hill over the last 10 yrs, IMHO)................colleges have sold their souls, but it has been a 2 way street.
