Cataldi was an adjunct at La Salle for a few years. I had him. He was somehow even worse at teaching than he is at radio.

First off, I don't listen to that big nosed Boston bastard at all but I did tune in, curious to see if they even talked about La Salle basketball (of course, over the Eagles). He was horrible, saying what ever school Coach got his doctorate from should ask for it back and some other personal insults. I have a feeling he was trying to drum up calls because he said no one had called to talk about the game. He went on to say his wife had a degree from the school so he was allowed to criticize, etc. I was half tempted to call in and retaliate but I probably would have been cut off so I switched back to SIRIUS. Can anyone confirm if his wife really is a graduate?

I have heard Cataldi say his wife loves La Salle so perhaps she is a graduate.
Truth is the entire morning show has been brutal to La Salle for some time. Morganti might be worse than Cataldi taking shots at La Salle.

Awful lot of ill will towards La Salle in the local sports media in the last decade. Much was mean spirited. Hopefully we have turned a new leaf.

Forgive my previously diagnosed "pompous New Yorkerism" but my friends and I spend hours complaining about WFAN, but anytime I have to listen to WIP, I'm so thankful for the FAN. Its because there isn't a human alive that would take Cataldi or Eskin or whoever's knowledge against Francesa's. You can disagree as much as you want, but Francesa (and Russo) were encyclopedias who gave bad opinions, not dummies who existed to incite other dummies.

OK, forgive me for asking this here but it’s not worth starting a new thread. I was told second hand that on Friday’s WIP morning show, Angelo Cataldi said something to the effect that the Explorers let the city of Philadelphia down by not winning Thursday night. Maybe someone heard it? I stopped listening to his show months ago because I think he’s a carpet bagging idiot. If we let the city down, then what did temple, Nova, SJU and Drexel do???

Regarding Angelo Cataldi, It does not warm my heart to know Cataldi taught or teaches at La Salle. His on air tactics frequently play upon and appeal to some of the baser parts of the audiences's humanity. It is all about selling his product, his show, his personality. In a playful way, he creates and foments controversy. He routinely takes thing to extremes. I wish it was not so but he is obviously very successful. Maybe that is how he got the teaching gig? Certainly, everything he does in his schtick is legal. I find his clownishness annoying. And, in my judgement much of what he does is in bad taste. But it sells. I do find his attitude toward women as disrespectful, and over the line. But he pulls it off without taking much return heat. I stopped listening a long time ago. I would certainly skip his course.

I find it hard to believe anyone pays attention to him. The Philly sports talk radio is so pathetic that I stopped listening years ago although time to time listen in for a couple of minutes to see if any improvement has been made but No. Years ago they used to talk on factual things and had good conversation but more recently (10-15 years) it is more like a reality show based mostly on insults and what they try to sell as comedy. Just a couple of minutes listening to Cataldi's studid nonsense is simply not enjoyable. I look at Cataldi as I look at Stern if you can't impress the public with knowledge see if they will buy SHIT and they (public) DO.

On my second or third day in Philadelphia, I turned on WIP since it was usually mentioned in NY as being Phila's equivalent of WFAN. After about 15 minutes if waiting for the hosts to mention something relating to sports (they were talking about a movie, don't remember which one), I turned it off and never listened again...until this week, when I fired up my radio app to listen to Tyrone Garland being 'interviewed.' What a joke that was.

It is the callers as much as the hosts. Those people on 97.1 between noon and 2 pm out of the blue decided to give a prize to the first caller on hold who could name three LaSalle players. They went through 9 callers before someone could name even one. I know Big Daddy Graham, Gargano, Macnow, Charry and Ria Hughes are huge Big 5 fans. Unfortunately the callers know nothing about the Big 5 teams and only want to discuss Vick, Bynum or Halladay.

Howard is an innovator, and is also a brilliant guy. He may not be your cup of tea, but he's an original, and the "baser" parts of his show have always been exaggerated.

I have to agree with neumann on this one. Even though he's a New Yorker, Stern is a great interviewer, innovator and entertainer. Cataldi is a hack who let some initial airtime success go to his head. He's a no-talent dunce.

Re Angelo. His job is to get you talking about him. You are taking about him. There is no questioning his talent in that regard. Don't forget, he won a pulitzer before diving into the shallow end of the entertainment journalism gene pool. I don't listen to his show personally because I find his brand of comedy beneath me intellectually but its right in the wheelhouse of the average sports fan.

To get back to the original topic i think there are a couple things that were not mentioned.
1 - Our success this year and the amount of returning players we have will lead to higher exepctations like the ones heaped on SJU this summer/fall. It will be interesting to see how the guys react.
2 - Our tournament run will hopefully (likely) give our "brand" some more merit with the Selection Committee if we take care of business during the regular season and hopefully get us a better seed or keep us off the bubble
3 - with the departure of the usual TV teams for the A10 with Xavier, Butler and Temple alongside our entertaining style of play and more national reconizability (is that a word?) I bet we see ourselves featured more on the A10 package with ESPN than in the last 3 years combined. Hopefully these are all road games.

I think us and VCU will be the most prominent on TV from the A10 next year, and think the game @nova will definitely be on ESPN... (was on espn3.com last time we played at Nova). We're going to get everyone in the A10's "best shot" next year due to the fact that we had the most postseason success in the conference. Opposing fans will be juiced to play us. How we handle those road environments will be the key to our season. I think we finish no less than 3rd in the revamped A10.. and think we should be able to expect an A10 championship given the talent we have returning and the talent the league is losing. I can't wait for fall...

Thoughts on at some point next season being ranked?

I think we'll spend a least a couple weeks ranked.... we have a winnable Paradise Jam scheduled against BCS and name schools that are very beatable, plus early tilts with schools such as Nova and probably Temple... and Miami also offers a chance to boost our resume next year. I could certainly see us spending a good chunk in the top 25.

I wonder if we'll end the season at #25 this year in the final poll. I'm sure we'll at least be in the "others receiving votes", no?

Good points, as usual, and here's what I think 1- That's a given, but it's a high class problem I will embrace without hesitation. The big distinction between us and SJU was that they got the preseason props (a) based on one extra win over us in the NIT, not due to 3 NCAA wins, which makes a huge difference and (b) they backed into that status largely due to Majerus not coaching, X losing key players and TU having big graduating senior losses. Ours will be earned more in relative terms, but VCU and St Lou will get a lot of votes, so we could wind up in the 3 position, which is fine since it matters most how you finish. 2- It will help for a year, but we'll have to earn it since our conference RPI will take a hit without TU, X and Butler. ESPN no doubt will prop up their investment in the ACC by hyping it and nuking any upstarts like the A10 any chance they get. Remember all the moaning about the ACC teams and SEC teams that didn't get in, but we did? 3- This is a fair bet. What's the over and under for the number of times the Southwest Philly Floater gets floated? Not complaining though -- any press is good press, even if it's been recycled by the media a million times.

They did the same thing we did, lost a home NIT game.

I think our top priority needs to bring in someone who can win the dunk or 3 point contest. This is a disgrace to La Salle and Philadelphia.
