TCN aired a replay of the 1969 game last night. I know they have aired this before, however, after watching last nights telecast I realize how good Kenny Durrett, Fatty Taylor and Bernie Williams were but without the contributions of Ed Chesny and Stan Ladarchek I don't think LaSalle wins that game. I was hoping some of the gentleman that are part of this board and part of that era of LaSalle basketball could confirm or deny my assumptions and maybe elaborate on those two ballplayers.

Yes, I was in the stands that night. Chesney, more than Wlodarczyk, won that game for the explorers. Stan got in foul trouble trying to contain Howard Porter who had about a hundred rebounds that night. Ed kept Porter in check (relatively speaking) and contributed more to the offense than Wlodarczyk. One of the best moments in the game was Chesny on a breakaway and actually dribbling more than 3 steps for the layup. Big men did not handle the ball like that in those days. That was what made Durrett so special. Fran Dunphy also made a big contribution off of the bench that night. Larry Cannon did not have a great game that night but he was the heart and soul of that team.
You may have noticed that the offense ran through the high post manned by Wlodarczyk and Chesny. If there had been a 3 point shot in those days that team would have won that game by double digits. Villanova packed it in to keep Durrett and Cannon from running the baseline. Bernie had range. Vlllanova was a great team and the game was sloppy but that explorer team was truly great.

I have the game on DVD but it was on last night and I watched it again.
I was surprised how passionate the La Salle fans were. Maybe it is because I haven't seen a top ranked La Salle team play another Top 10 Big 5 team at the Palestra but looked like a far cry from today's La Salle fans which are some of the more quieter fans in the city.
Larry Cannon did not play well at all although he did get a key 3 point basket. Fattie Taylor was a real pest it looked like. La Salle looked up court for fast breaks at every opportunity of the defensive glass.
The game was much different that today's game and both Dunphy and O'Hanlon mentioned that.
It looked like a great time to be a Big 5 fan back then.

What did not come through on the broadcast was how loud it was at the Palestra that night. I think my friends and I stood during the entire game, and the stands were shaking quite a bit. An incredible atmosphere. Unlike today, and despite having some great players on their own team, the Villanova fans were in awe of our team that year. Most never expected to beat us that night.
