Congrats to Coach Dunphy on being honored by Malvern Prep yesterday: Fran Dunphy shared that he was humbled to “go on a wall that has Jim Stewart's name on it — it is pretty special for me.” He continued by sharing with the faculty, staff, and students that, “Jim Stewart was a true leader in everything that he did. If the world was more like Jim Stewart, we'd be safe and secure, would be nicer to be more sympathetic and empathetic. Everyone would feel that they had value.” Not only did Dunphy attend Malvern Prep, but he also coached basketball for a time at the urging of Jim Stewart. Dunphy closed his talk by sharing a story of a player who had reached out to help a student in need and he reminded all Malvern Prep students, “If you think life is about you, you're in for a boring existence. If you think life is about others, you're going to have the time of your life. You're going to feel good about yourself, and you're going to work hard.”

They must have some sky high standards if he’s just getting honored now.

One of the first recipients identified in that article was Charles “Chic” Kelly ‘88. He was a teacher at Malvern when my boys went, and his brother Tim officiates a lot of our games (and I think is one of the better refs). Tragic story about Chic. Was a walk-on hockey player at Merrimack and went head first into the boards his freshman year at practice and has been a quadriplegic since. He's been fighting with the NCAA to up his insurance coverage for years with no success. SI did a feature on him back in 2011. With the money the NCAA has, it sucks that he's being paid out at 1988 rates. www.si.com/more-sports/2011/07/28/chic-kelly

Sounds almost identical to Travis Roy from Boston University. Paralyzed 11 seconds into his first shift in 1995.

Congrats to Dunph!! Stew was a great man, very much like Dunph. Coached my grade school football team for 50 years and ran the swim club we hung out at during the summer.
