Interesting comparable. No need to charter a whole railcar to get to Brooklyn, I'm merely asking 7 random people to go to scrape together some coin and go to an away game! Gotta start somewhere... www.wric.com/news/vcu-fans-travel-to-a-10-tournament-in-school-spirited-amtrak-ramcar/Incidentally, for all off-peak travel times, Amtrak has recently adopted a new pricing model that is extremely customer friendly. Depending on how early you book these, the one way return train ticket might even be cheaper than the basketball game or a beer. Yes, I've seen some one ways go for as low as $5 to $10 on Amtrak which is cheaper than a bus fare or the tolls for the same distance.

I’ve been taking advantage of Amtrak pricing over the last few months. I recently did a trip to NY for a family of 4 for a total of $60! For comparison if anybody doesn’t travel Amtrak much, in the past I would typically spend at least $74 one way per ticket!

Yeah, its brutal. I'd love to do any travel from here up through New England and down through atleast Virginia by train versus plane or car, but the prices and travel times just don't make it worthwhile, esp with family. Like I just looked at Newark to Charleston, SC is 13 hours. Unless you have a fear of flying, you're not doing that.

Like I just looked at Newark to Charleston, SC is 13 hours. Unless you have a fear of flying, you're not doing that. I won't drive that far, and because of consolidation, most airfares are getting out of control, particularly for direct flights. And a whole lot of flights get canceled, compared to trains. On the train I can stretch, walk around, eat lunch, take bathroom breaks, watch netflix, dial in to a conf call, or read/relax/nap. These perceived drawbacks, as you say, don't really impact me at all. Would agree that anything south of Richmond is a gamble. But from there to Boston south station, rail is better (and way more accessible regarding price) than alternatives. Last minute surge fares notwithstanding, because they're usually even better than airfare by that point. Back on subject of La Salle to GW, Amtrak is still the best option, and group fares for extra discounts are icing on the cake. Even if the fare were comparable to gas and tolls, nobody ever remembers to factor in wear and tear. Easily another $60 or 100+ down the drain that gets ignored. You're that much closer to a dead battery, blown tire or even a total loss. Now if we could just get 3+ people to agree with the train schedule and commit!

There are three Saturday departures for $39 basic value fare (one way, nonrefundable rate, reservations required). They leave Phila at 2:18 p.m., 2:46 p.m., and 3:35 p.m.. Each of these trains get into DC Union station 2 hours later. You absolutely cannot drive there that fast with Saturday afternoon traffic.
The return trips, leaving DC at 9:10pm or 9:55pm, are just $10 for a one way value fare, because they're off peak times.
The $49 fare can be had for just 40.67 per person if you use the group fare promotion, reserving in advance as outlined in the original post above, and travel as a party of three.

hykos, i applaud your effort with this, but getting people on here to go to away games is the least of la salle's problems. people need to show up at gola and be engaged. the crowd for the dayton game was an absolute embarrassment. no excuses for people to not show up to see the 16th ranked team in the country. can't blame not attending on a shitty opponent. there was no juice on either the student or alumni sides. the players deserve better.

Need the students for sure. Alumni side routinely has no energy as well (other than the Gola boys and the one guy who yells at the refs). As an aside, praying the chant that happens at the 8 min mark of the 2nd half makes its way to the bagster after this year. The one where the PA guy (E!) does it with the cheerleaders followed up by the equally bad “Let’s. Go. L-S-U.” Wish I could say we were anywhere near LSU athletically.
