i thought la salle joining the mcc was dumb but this is way worse than that. in addition to the $5m, they're going to need to give out an additional 15-20 football scholarships and they will still get left behind when the p5 schools break away. going to need to add women's scholarships for other sports to stay title ix compliant.
and their travel budget will explode, having to send all of their teams to: alabama (jacksonville st) florida (fiu) kentucky (western kentucky) louisiana (louisiana tech) new mexico (nmsu) tennessee (mtsu) texas (sam houston st)
liberty (in virginia) is the only school that makes geographical sense.
whoever at ud made this decision is out of their mind.

Don’t forget the NIL money for the players and recruits to compete in C-USA.

I heard this at noon. I need to collect my thoughts. Obviously as a FB conference the CAA was falling apart. I can see making the FB move to the Sunbelt….but $5M to join C-USA. I am totally bumfuzzled.

I am totally bumfuzzled. It's an investment. They probably accounted for some more massive returns from "buy" games as well as being televised more. So it's going to pay them some dividends in the long run. Right? The only problem I foresee is that they may lose more games, but at this level, they're probably concerned with FCS not being long term viable as a number of programs continue to either try to make the jump up to FBS, or fold.

Thanks, Hyksos. I am still pondering. I agree with your statement.
Yet, reflect on this “chasing big time football has led Temple to___________________..?
Now, that is a 10 point fill in the blank/essay combo. Answer in full sentences, please.

Delaware seems to have a better infrastructure and fan base than Temple so I suspect they will be more successful. However, like Temple, the conference provides little cache for the Hens. I presume the debate for Delaware revolved around trying to determine what the future is for college football and they must have decided that the move to conference USA was their best option. I'm sure the model for the powers that be is James Madison rather than Temple.

Delaware owns their stadium and it’s on campus, which is a huge advantage over the Owls.

So far, all good points. Here’s one that scares me….Temple got rid of baseball. I hope UD doesn’t do that.

imo, the biggest negative impact to delaware athletics because of this move is not on football. it's the other sports. i have to believe that martin inglesby is already updating his resume. other than one african kid, his roster is made up entirely of kids from the ne corridor and i'm sure he prefers it that way. kids from the ne part of the country aren't going to want to have to travel half way across the country to play 2/3 of their games against a largely mediocre collection of basketball programs.
i don't have time to look but ud typically fields very competitive teams in the non-revenue sports and my guess is those teams do the bulk of their recruiting in the ne corridor. unless they're going to find a way to help their athletes get lucrative nil deals, recruiting to delaware for these non-revenue sports will most likely get a lot tougher.

Knowing nothing about college football, what's the ceiling here? Maryland? Rutgers?

Knowing nothing about college football, what's the ceiling here? Maryland? Rutgers? This is what I always wonder about when Northeastern schools decide to make a big push on college football (See UConn, Temple, UMass). What's the best case scenario? You're not going to draw 40 or 50 thousand a game (or even 30 if we're being realistic). The only programs in this part of the country, which I'm defining as the Boston to DC corridor-as far west as like Central NY/PA, that you consider "major" programs at all are Boston College, Syracuse, Rutgers, Maryland, and maybe I'm forgetting one. The only other places that even play FBS are Army and Navy, which are their own entity, Temple, which has been well documented, and UMass and UConn who are both case studies in it going horribly. Unless I'm forgetting someone big, that's not exactly a list worth bragging about in the last 30 years.

Knowing nothing about college football, what's the ceiling here? Maryland? Rutgers? Good question. The wisenheimer in me wants to say Temple. The Hens have struggled enough with Villanova football over the last decade. There now exists an unhealthy fixation on Nova FB. One of my old friends (over 50 years with Season Tix to Hens FB) texted me last night "Now, who do we hate?" The real ceiling? The wingnuts are dreaming of becoming the next Liberty

They have SEVEN sports that Conference USA doesnt field a league in. And I’m not talking real unique ones like archery or wrestling. Like standard college sports that they’re going to ram their teams into any league that will take them (or drop the programs).
