Nice piece. Knight transformed players from iron to steel or iron to scrap. You loved him or hated him - there was nothing in between. He would not exist in today's campus environment (con) but produced champions, stars and legendary coaches (Coach K most notably) (pro).

Bobby Knight was honest when he said Brooks was the best college player he ever coached.

I neither love nor hate Knight, but I've always had a feeling that he may have had some sort of undiagnosed mental illness. Back in the late 90's he did a Playboy interview that was amazing and insightful, but also weird and ultimately became violent. I'm always happy to see evidence of his good side.

Its possible, but its also possible he had niche brilliance which allowed him to be an unchecked asshole for most of his life.

The good and bad in everyone...Knight is a curious case.

Dude had snakes in his head. Said some really twisted stuff. That doesn't change even if he was a great basketball mind.

But I push back against romantic notions that he is simply a throwback to to a tougher age. I think of him the same way that I think of Phil Spector: a true game changer, but also a true loonytune.

Yeah, plenty of guys have done plenty of winning without acting like he did. It's not just a generational thing.

It's possible to be a great coach and bully. Bob Knight was both.
