Shepherd tweeted that he will be exploring his options and enter the Transfer portal. Disappointing!

That's really disappointing but not surprising. He probably felt like he should have got more time on the floor and frankly I would say he should have.

I haven't seen enough this year to know his skill level, but he's noticeable for sure. Just explodes off the ground.

I hate to see him go because of his potential. I assumed he would work on his ball handling and mid range and 3 point shooting in the off season. No team can afford a wing player who the other team wouldn't guard when he's in the corner. If he develops a better shot and becomes a stronger ball handler he will be awesome wherever he plays. I'm disappointed to see him go and wish him well.

Bummer.....The optimism I felt last 3 games is fading quickly...

Damn. I loved when he started getting minutes. He was a crowd favorite at the Gola with his explosiveness, and i thought he was going to be a key player for us next season. He made the games fun to watch in person because you were always waiting for him to explode to the rim or rise above everyone and grab a rebound.
It begins.

Shepherd is supremely athletic but never seemed to harness it into his overall game. He's a much better dunker than he is a shooter or defender. There are others currently on the team whose departure would hit me much harder.

Athleticism is fun, he was a highlight real for his dunks and he's was a good rotational player. He filled a role we majorly need when it came to collecting rebounds and providing some offense inside. However, we tend to get way too caught up in a player's athleticism than their actual abilities. He shooting mechanics are pretty much broken and he wasn't the best defender. The minutes aren't there for him entering next season either and he wants to play. I hope he finds a great fit and has a great career.

I wish him nothing but the best going forward in his life and career. I just don't believe this is a huge loss for La Salle basketball. This team has other needs which Shepherd would be unable to fill.

This is what college basketball is now for schools like La Salle.
There will be more that leave. A lot of players will be out there over the next 2 months.

Lots of potential for sure and appreciate his waiting for season to end prior to announcing, also hope he stays. Agree he needs to improve parts of his game mentioned previously, and thought his defense yesterday was lacking. Whatever his final decision might be, wish him well. Upside, frees up opening for an impact wing which team lacks.

Better ball handling, better shot and court judgement all very see-able in his future with more seasoning. I have no issue with the coach's gradual usage of him. I hope he is not put out about that. To me his rawness was observable (even to this layman). I wonder if his concern is guys still playing ahead of him next year? I do believe if he ups his game he could change that knowing Dunphy.

In all games, he was 7th on the team in minutes played, points, assists, 5th in blocks, 4th in rebounds.
In conference only play when he really started getting floor time, he was 5th in minutes, points, and blocks, 6th in assists, and 3rd in free throws made and rebounds.

This is my assumption, given there are positive rumors out there about much of this roster returning I don't know where he fits in outside of being a good rotation player you very much would like to have. In theory La Salle is going to get a big man. Shephard can only really play the 4, maybe 3 depending on the rotation and would get lost in the rotation if the Drame's return and you have a legit PF. Simply put you can't have 2 or 3 players on the court that struggle to shoot outside of 10 feet. I'm assuming he wants to start and given the roster the mins just aren't there.

I believe Dunphy did not put him in the first half until after nine minutes had been played. The whole season I've been complaining about not giving him enough minutes. La Salle doesn't get many super athletic players. I think lack of playing time was the biggest reason and I don't blame him. Dunphy blew it on this one but he otherwise did a superb job of coaching.

If he was 7th in minutes for all games and 5th in conf games it would not seem minutes should be the issue. If you recall Fran’s comments they would be talking to everyone in the coming week. I doubt this has occurred yet. It would seem he made his decision before the season was over. As to Fran blowing it I trust his judgement based on his experience and record.

Every kid should enter the portal every year. With NIL and no downside, it just makes sense.

A number of us have mentioned the same critiques about his shooting, ball handling and defense and I suspect these were part of the ongoing narrative between Coach and player. Shepherd is showtime gifted as an athlete but his skillset is raw. Unless he works hard on improving his skills he may get fewer minutes depending on where he goes. As to hoping he returns I suspect that is a longshot. I wonder if Deshaun already knows where he's going as I suspect tampering is rampant with the portal. From Dunphy's perspective he now has two scholarships to give and as soon as he has two commits he wants, he has to take them so how long can he wait to see if Shepherd changes his mind.

Every kid should enter the portal every year. With NIL and no downside, it just makes sense. There is a downside. When you enter the portal, the school can start recruiting to fill your scholarship spot. If Dunphy finds someone better than Shepherd while he is exploring his options, Shep could be out of luck.

Coaches don’t do this though Maybe I’m misunderstanding but coaches 100% tell players if you enter the transfer portal and change your mind I can’t guarantee you a spot back. Multiple coaches are on the record saying this and it happened to kimbrough under Ash Howard.

You think Dunphy will wait around to see what offers Shepherd gets and wait for his decision? No way. He has a roster to fill and wants to get the best players available. You tell your girlfriend that you want to date around, and then she finds another boyfriend, you're hosed.

Multiple coaches are on the record saying this and it happened to kimbrough under Ash Howard. I’m pretty sure Kimbrough decided to go to Hartford and then Hartford decided to go D3. Slightly extenuating circumstances assuming my memory is correct. I’d love for someone to provide a documented example where a kid who wasn’t a problem (and Shepherd is arguably a favorite on this board) wanted to come back to a school and was told sorry but it’s been filled.

Given the type of coach Dunphy, his reputation and character I bet of Shepherd changed his mind he would make it work.
I’ll dig up where coaches said it but Cal said it last season when the rule went into effect. In terms of Kimbrough, it was reported by Mike Jensen that Kimbrough entered the transfer portal with the expectation he would go to Rutgers. Rutgers pulled their offer and when he turned back to Ash he said no we already filled your position. It was on a podcast just trying to remember which one.
