Jon Rothstein- a terrific follow on twitter for hoops fans- was on campus at practice today. Lots of great things to say about the squad and noted in particular how the front court looked really good, Steve Zack in particular was looking real good. Not getting my expectations out of line I hope but he seems to have legit improvement. We shall see

Is it possible for the Steve Zack expectations to get any higher? I've never seen a player get more pub and accolades for off season work. I hope he's a dominant beast but it worries me as a gun shy La Salle fan to get too excited about anything.

Zack continues to impress Rothstein...a day later. Jon Rothstein (@jonrothstein)
10/9/12, 2:02 PM Can't get over how good Steve Zack was for La Salle yesterday. Reminded of UCLA's Travis Wear. Good on offensive glass, lots of intangibles.

If Zack is as improved as we are led to believe we are Final 4 bound. I just can't see such a big leap happening. Nothing against Steve but histroy shows us it rarely happens.

I agree- I'm sure they improvement isn't as dramatic as it sounds, however, if the improvement is at all measurable it is good for us in the long term- just because it hasn't happened much at la Salle, doesn't mean it can never happen
In other news- Galloway has a slight concussion- hope he can get back with no lingering effects after last years scare game 1

I don't get how high Rothstein is on Zack and our guards and then at the same time picks us to finish sixth in the league.
I know the league is jam packed with quality teams, but his tweets on the Explorers over the summer and early fall make us out to be a real high caliber squad.

Issue is whether he is now a really good player or merely improved.

You could see that Steve def. had the foundation to improve... He just didn't have the ability to train.. No reason for a writer to continue to gloat about a player (it is not like he is a relative) especially when it puts his credibility on the line..
Steve Zack probably will be a spot start against teams with a larger center... BUT even with him being one of the first guys off the bench, it is a remarkable improvement and one that could pay HUGE dividends in the long run!
Especially if Wright's foul trouble starts up again..

Remember it is not like he was a speculative add.. I mean a big man who is mobile with good hands is huge combination. Putting on muscle (weakness) happens often because he is exposed to a weight room and trainer everyday for the first time in his life.
Per ESPN Recruiting (Scout Grade: 82):
Strengths: Zack is an extra long and mobile center. He runs the floor well and cover the court laterally pretty good for his size. Zack has good hands and can catch and finish on a consistent basis. He rebounds and blocks or changes shots in and out of his area as well. He is a good low post position defender and possesses a good work ethic.
Weaknesses: In addition to adding strength for physical low post play Zack will need to continue to build his back to the basket offensive skill package.
Bottom Line: Zack's defense is ahead of his offense at this stage of the game with his ability to rebound and block shots. He is capable of becoming a good offensive player as well because of his size and mobility. Zack has very good upside.
