A few years ago, there was a plan to demolish them and build a towers-style dorm setup. There were also plans to do away with North Dorms as part of this after the towers were built and have more "green space" and parking over where North Dorms are.
Those plans changed.

Nostalgia can be a wonderful thing for we alums... but the crammed boxes where people lived 20 to 40 years ago does nothing to attract a student with today's particular expectations and needs. Declining enrollment underscores that. From a revenue standpoint, you need housing on campus to be modern and adequate or else people may use alternatives that are readily available to them elsewhere, whether that be off campus or another university altogether. From a value standpoint, anything that can be offered needs to justify the rising costs. 20 to 40 years ago, that housing provided a great alternative for working families in need of a good value. Today, if similar value can be found at countless institutions, they'll need to find ways to differentiate, and attaining more modern housing must be one of the appropriate fixes under consideration.

I was surprised when I toured with my daughter in 2019 that they took us through the North Dorms. The pretty much looked as they did when I graduated in 93. I think the newer dorms on South Campus would have been a better sell. Those are much nicer.

Great two years.

Except Freshman don't get into Basils easily right? Maybe they're keeping it real. I did two years in E&F. Great two years. They said it was too far to walk to South Campus on the tour. I think we owe it to our university to submit feedback to admissions higher ups of the costly failure to enroll students because of some perceived need to keep the view of campus within artificial constraints. If people are incapacitated, give them a shuttle bus for the duration of the visit. In fact, a shuttle loop should be recommended for all first time guests to get the lay of the land. Anything considered embarrassing or an eyesore on such a tour can either be omitted from the route easily, or else be addressed with a targeted capital investment. I for one will be writing a letter. I just don't think my feelings on a message board about this is doing anything other than probably falling on deaf ears.

I told the admissions officer directly. He was a fraternity brother of mine who since left for Wagner at the end of this school year. I gave him a good deal of feedback about the tour.
For example, one parent asked the girl giving the tour, "These facilities look dated. Are there any plans to improve or upgrade them?" The girl said she didn't know of any. Not her fault that nothing had been communicated to her and she hadn't been equipped to answer questions like that from prospective students.
In contrast, when my son toured Nova in 2016, there was a 3D model of the new facilities plans on display in the Connelly Center, and the tour guided highlighted the new theater, dorms, parking garage, and pavilion that would be built over the coming years.

Even though I only lived there my Freshman year (ended up getting one of the last rooms in Basil's my Sophomore year- which was the year it opened), I've always had a soft spot for North Dorms and kinda thought all Freshman should live there for one year. But that's nostalgia. And I also realize my Freshman year was 18 years ago, and they were not exactly state of the art then. Assuming not much has changed in those buildings (and honestly I don't see how they really COULD change in any meaningful way), you're showing early 80's era dorms to kids who's parents probably went to school a decade later than that at least.
I don't like to kick the school about this kind of stuff normally, but if you really aren't going to show them the nicest dorms on campus because it's a 10 minute walk, I think that's a serious misstep.

When i took my son and his friend on a tour they showed the new dorms first. Funny is the young man who was giving us the tour seemed to know nothing about the school. I ended up answering more questions about the school than he did.

I lived in Francis my first semester in the mid-90s. E&F was absolutely disgusting and awful back then. Hated every second of living there. Switched to Neumann my second semester and never stepped foot in that pit ever again.

I probably didn't go in those dorms more than a half dozen times total but my memory is they were very dimly lit. Just an unhappy place to be.
(And assuming I'm right it was 6 or less times, my underage violation percentage there was 16.67% or higher.)

I told the admissions officer directly. He was a fraternity brother of mine who since left for Wagner at the end of this school year. Not knocking you. I find we feel exactly the same way about this issue and similarly strongly. We have often teased you about defecting to other schools but I am certainly going to encourage my children to expand their options as well. And yeah, sending feedback to someone who is transient in a position with some turnover is probably falling on deaf ears to a great extent. I'm interested in seeing if the VPs, and President, and the more permanent fixtures on campus have gotten this feedback of yours or if they are unaware. Given that you're not shy, I'm sure you gave a piece of your mind to anyone who gave you a listen. Curious what kind of action, if any, they're going to be taking to address your tour feedback. To not review feedback from tours and implement some corrections is both lazy and irresponsible on the part of not only the admissions department, but the university as a whole.

To not review feedback from tours and implement some corrections is both lazy and irresponsible on the part of not only the admissions department, but the university as a whole. Well...he wasn't exactly transient. He had worked in the admissions office from 1999 until this June, but got an opportunity he couldn't pass up. Unfortunately, there was an administration in place that wouldn't listen to feedback at the time...even from the people within...even from people on the President's Council. When I asked him why the tour guides weren't aware of any future infrastructure plans to help sell the school, he told me they weren't allowed to officially share anything. It put the whole admissions office at a disadvantage. It was the classic new leader mistake of coming in and thinking you know everything better than the people who had been there and knew the people and the culture. Change was needed, but how a leader enacts the change and builds consensus is more important. That was missed. And yes...looking is important as you go through the process. You are a ways off from it. The reasons La Salle was a fit for me weren't necessarily the reasons it would be for my kids. My daughter was closest to going there, but in the end felt there would be different opportunities for her at Duquense. So far, it seems to have been the right choice for her.

North Dorms was a gigantic step up the next year.

I have great memories from E&F...from what I can remember. I was there in the mid to late 70's, and lived on first floor Francis my freshman year. My roommate and I were the only freshmen on the floor of a bunch of swimmers, track guys and one of the basketball players. They took us under their wing and we had a blast. They sure knew how to party.
We moved over to first floor Edwards for our soph and junior years. Again there was a few basketball players on the floor and again, lots of partying. We all moved up to the apartments our senior year and the fun continued.
The best part of living on E&F was that we were next to the gym, so it was easy to play pick up basketball for hours. The added bonus of course was that we just had to hop over the wall to hit the Hideaway or The Explorer's Den. Great times for sure!
