Keys to the game against SJU:
1 - stay within the flow of the game and don't get caught up in all the emotion and try to do too much or win the game in one possession
2 - keep the ball in Jones' hands as much as possible. The guy makes bad decisions and dribbles too much; he takes the Hawks out of rhythm. He can get hot shooting the ball but he doesn't make them function as a better team
3 - deny the ball to Kancevic anywhere on the floor. I would put Galloway on Kancevic and Mills on Jones
4 - Pass the ball on offense and work for open shots. The Hawks hate to play half-court basketball, especially on defense. They like to Block shots and get out on the fast break for alley-oops and dunks. Patient offense with purposeful ball movement will do a couple things. A- it keeps them playing defense longer than they want, B- open shots hopefully lead to made shots which allows La Salle to set up on defense. Pressuring the ball 90 feet will slow down the Hawks and the more they have to play half-court offense the mroe apt they are to turn it over. The hawks turn the ball over...a lot.
5 - if Aiken wants to stand around on the 3-pt line on offense I say leave him be and keep Zack down low. No need to take a foul 20 feet from the basket when the center is trying to drive to the basket thinking he's Kevin Durant. If he wants to shoot the 3, go ahead and let him. He takes 3 per game and averages making less than 1 per game. Don't let his presence on the eprimeter open the lane for guys like Roberts and Kancevic to pass the ball on the interior.
6 - Keep Roberts 10 feet from the basket. The guy is a monster athlete but he has very little post moves and usually has a difficult time getting a good shot with his back to the basket.
7 - the Hawks trio of Kanacevic, Aiken and Roberts turns the ball over more than 5 times per game. Need to convert those turns into points in a hurry which then allows you to get back to setting your defense and pressuring the ball.
Bottom line is this. The Hawks want to get out and play highlight reel hoops and the longer you keep that from happening the more frustrated they get and more sloppy they become as a unit. The Hawks are not a deep team by any stretch of the imagination. Making them grind out long defensive possessions should pay off late in the game. Foul trouble early will be beneficial as well. Aiken and Roberts are great shot blockers and don't bite on upfakes, our guys need good body control and ball movement to get them out of position and hopefully draw some whistles.
