Never forget the 1992 MAAC Championship tournament win over arch-enemy Steve Lappas and Manhattan. Paul Burke was out with emergency surgery, and it was a last go-round for a mostly senior team. Milko Liverst was an absolute bear! The team celebrated into the night at the hotel pool and all the intensity and pressures transformed into joyousness that they will never forget.

If my memory is correct, the annual Tap Off Rally game always pitted the freshmen against the varsity until 1965. Allegedly, the staff believed the ‘65 freshmen team would run the varsity out of the Wistar Hall Gym. Many students were in attendance to see the mismatch, but to their disappointment the blue and gold teams were both composites of freshmen and varsity players.

Cool Would have been the Cannon, Williams Wlodarczyck, led Freshmen team. Not sure who else (Did the legendary Sky King make it onto that team?) I am guessing Hubie Marshal and Left Ervin and crew would have been bested by these guys . Interesting, love to know the full roster of that Freshmen team.

Isaih King’s obit from 2 years ago...Sky King’s Obit from 2018Because as he wasn't at La Salle very long he slipped from my memory. When his name resurfaced I googled him and found that he had passed away. I never met him or saw him play but do recall seeing his name on old ABA roster. RIP, Isaih.

January 2, 1998, Villanova vs. La Salle at the Spectrum After losing only once in the Lionel Simmons years in limited scheduling we had dropped both games to Villanova in the mid 1990s. The Explorer’s starting line-up was stacked with talent in 1997-98. Against Villanova it featured Donnie Carr (16 pts), Mike Gizzy (?), K’Zell Wesson (14) and Victor Thomas (10) but it was freshman C Garrett Bragg who made the difference. Having a career game with 14 pts on 6-8 shooting, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks he helped pave the way to a 72-65 Blue & Gold win. Garrett used his size (6’ 11”, 275 lbs) to advantage out-muscling the evil Wild-kittens. The game was definitely a sweet victory although the season was disappointing. La Salle went 5-11 (A 10) and 9-19 overall losing in the opening round of the A-10 tournament to Overbook 72-73. Villanova, coached by Steve Lappas, went 8-10, 12-17.

I'll play along: I will provide games/yrs: 86/87 NIT Finalist L to So Miss. For the first time, I witnessed a sold out arena and tremendous Blue and Gold support. 86/87 NIT semis W in Madison square garden. Scored 4 pts in the garden. Made history. LOL 86/87 Nova reg season win. I believe Legs hit the game winner at Dupont. 86/87 Nova NIT win. I believe Train hit the game winner at Dupont. 86/87 NC lost at the Palestra after a bogus offensive foul call on Rich Tarr as Lebo pulled him down. Later, I spoke with Matt Dougherty (Kansas recruitment) while I was an assistant at Glen Mills and we debated about it all over again. LOL 86/87 Depaul lost at the Palestra Dallas Comegys and Rod Strickland who handled the rock like no other I'd ever seen before. 86/87 Temple lost at the Palestra, Nate Blackwell outscored us by himself in the second half with 25pts to our 21pts as a team 86/87 first time ever on a plane as a freshman. Didn't know the sky had potholes in it. LOL 20-13 record Feel free to comment on any of the games mentioned that you witnessed. Bobby, I was at that 86/87 NIT win over Villanova. One of my all-time favorite memories. Some of the older folks around here will recall that during those years a radio personality by the name of Steve Fredricks used to have a sports talk show on, I believe on WIP. I always thought Fredricks was a jackass but that’s just MHO. Fredricks used to co-host Rollie’s show on WIP and it was generally an hour of sycophantic hero worship by Fredricks that was frankly nauseating. Also, Fredricks used to do play-by-play of the Villanova games which aired on WIP or whatever station Fredricks was on. Fast forward to our matchup with the Villanova in the NIT at DuPont. As memory serves, that was the week that the SI cover story about Gary McClain’s cocaine use (and IIRC he also implicated some teammates) was about to or had just dropped. Rollie was getting some heat in the media for perhaps turning a blind eye to the drug use. At the beginning of the game, there was some question as to how the home Nova crowd would react to Rollie because of the story. Well ol’ Daddy Mass waited until the last possible second before tip-off to make his appearance and Fredricks jumped to his feet to lead the crowd in a standing ovation and even gave a big grin and thumbs up to his buddy. I recall it was a fantastic game and as Bobby pointed out came down to the last shot. If memory serves, Lionel went, if not full court, at least 3/4 court handling the ball and hit a last second jumper to win the game. Our seats were right across the court from Fredricks and I made sure to take a glance at that dope, his mouth agape in disbelief, just to savor the moment. I swear he cried. Great memory!

I really enjoyed beating them the most over my career. Nova screwed the Big Games up by leaving the Palestra and I still don't like it. Every Big 5 game should played the the Cathedral and no other place.

I will add my two cents on favorite game/memory. I go back to the early 80's and my senior year we beat the hated wildcats of Villanova 90 to 80. If memory serves me correctly, it was late in a close game when Ralph Lewis stepped in front of pass and went streaking down the court for a tomahawk slam. The place went wild, however, Stevie Black would not be denied and on Villanova's next possession stole the ball and went down for a fast break reverse dunk that blew the roof off the Palestra.

Steve Black and Ralph Lewis, two of my favorite players and tandems and what myself and Train was being compared to upon our entry at LaSalle. I remember the coaches always comparing me to Ralph in the sense of how we played with similarities and got better as the years went on.

88-89 We started out the season with a L to the CUSE, who were very talented and coming off being NCAA finalist featuring D. Coleman, Billy Owens, Sherman Douglas and Stephen Thompson. The few things that stood out to me other then us loosing to them was: 1. Having been told that I would not be starting just before departing from LaSalle to the airport. Thus focusing on being the best 6th man that I could and the best against the opposition and country. 2. Going to this great Italian restaurant in Syracuse. It was like they were fattening us up for the Kill. 3. The Team waiting for coach Rines to arrive so we could hear his take on the upcoming game. Highlight of the conversation and its goes like this: Steve Wreidt, who was our 7ft Freshmen center as he was laying in the bed relaxing, Coach Rines says to Steve, " you nervous for tomorrow?" Steve says "no I'm not nervous and I'm ready" Coach Rines says "I don't know why you not nervous because Derrick Coleman is going to Kill You." We laughed so hard and til this day still get laughter. 4. Seeing Derrick Coleman come out of the locker room looking like he was 7ft tall all arms and legs and going Damn. 5. Entering the game and hitting my first 3pt on my first shot and then building a house. 6. Doug and S. Douglas going one on one to the tune that Doug outscored him but forgot to be our point guard and Coach was so pissed at the half that he asked Doug, " who do the fuck you think you are? (No answer from Doug) Coach then answers his own question with "Jesus of Nazareth!" A classic to this day.
88-89 We go to Tennessee and win the Acme Boot Classic against Geo Southern and Austin Peay. We received a pair of cowboy boots and Coach P met his current wife.
88-89 We come back home and blow out St. Josephs for our first Big 5 of the season.
88-89 We Win the Josten's classic against Penn and Long Beach St. Thought I played well enough to make the All-Tourney team but it was not to be with a 15ppg and 3.5rpg coming off the bench. I was very happy that we won but the disappointment set in for the second year in a row of not making the all tourney team in this classic. It was a goal to help my team win 1st and make all tourney.

88-89 W versus St. Peters for our 1st MAAC W. The South Phila High Tandem lead the way. My best performance to date: Train 36pts, 12rebs- OG 20pts, 5rebs.
88-89 On to taking out Nova at the Dupont in overtime victory and storming off the court with the most exciting finish in our Big Five stint and maybe one of the best.
88-89 We head to the ATL to take on S. Carolina and whip their butts bad. 15pts,6rebs and off to trying to get one tourney award. Next up is Georgia in which they would not let us win. In other words we got the shaft. I remember us knocking down 3pters like they were going out of style and when we looked up at the score board we seemed to be always down by 10pts. They kept calling BS fouls and sending them to the effing line. I recall coach screaming like crazy at the refs and me telling coach, "No matter what we do, the fucking refs are cheating and they are not going to let us win as I ran past him on the court. He just said keep playing as to really say, Yeah i know. Train and OG led us with 19pts. Now I was pissed to the 3rd power for not only loosing and stopping our 8gm winning streakbut not making the tourney team. We did get to go out on the town though and got a chance to see Evander Holyfield and The singer Sherrell at this night club. It was a happening spot.

88-89 We were favored to beat TU at the Palestra, and I guess we thought that they would be struggling but it turn out that we built a skyscraper and our last ditch effort fell short.
88-89 Scored what would be my career high 25pts v Manhattan. The crazy thing was I had 18pts in the first half and even more bazaar which coach reaming out the team for playing selfishly and not passing me the ball more in the first half. I was like yeah what he said. It was the first time that I really heard coach speak up in my favor. Go figure.
88-89 The 2 game Bus Trip from Hell. We started at going to Army and the Bus driver looked like Freddie Kruger, no shit. So we were doing our usual on the bus trip but if you sat by the right side window you could clearly see over the cliff ass the bus drove the roads to West Point. It looked as if he was going to drive right off the fucking cliff to the point Mrs. Meme stated that she thought we were going to die and dreaded driving with him anymore. We beat Army Train 28pts, 13rebs, Og 20pts, 4rebs. So then is on to American DC. Doing what we do on the bus trip, playing cards and hearing all those soda cans role up and down the bus. We cap off the trip with a blowout twin bill by beating American. You know this SPHS thing is kinda working Train 39pts, 10rebs and OG 18pts, 6rebs. Back on the bus for food, fun and those noisy soda cans.

88-89 We invade South Bend in confident to take down the Irish. We jump on them early, I remember them wearing those football thigh pads, I to avoid thigh bruising however we were bruising them on the scoreboard and had them on the run. Being able to ignite the team in the 1st half by scoring 18pts in 14 minutes. I remember Ralph Flowers saying to me that he hoped coach started me in the 2nd half because of how hot I was. But that didn't happen. The second half was a battle back and forth. Again the game seemed winnable and coach again bellowed about playing unselfish. I remember scoring only 2pts in the second half in 10 minutes of action of 5 FGA. It came down to the SPHS tandem at the end. Train having a chance to put us ahead with seconds to go but missing the 1 & 1. Joe Fredrick whom I was guarding got the ball and dribble to the elbow closely guard by me and hoisted a jumper over my outstretched arm hitting the shot. We ran a play to get Jack a look with seconds to go and his got a good look but missed and it was not to be that night. I remember Ralph patting me on the back in the locker room reiterating what he stated earlier, I guess because it would have been something that ND would not have been expecting.
88-89 Of course, our biggest win on the national stage 101-100 v Fl St. Well whats to tell, It was something special to be apart of and on the winning end. 26-6 record 2x MAAC champions, NCAA tourney.

If anybody could pull up the series of articles that were done by the Daily News a few years back on the 60th anniversary of the Big 5. I know there were articles on the La Salle wins over Nova and Detroit that year.
If I am not mistaken the last game that the '69 team played at the Palestra was a barnburner where Detroit's Spencer Haywood had like 36 points and 45 rebounds. (just a guess at those stats).
I think the '69 La Salle team was the greatest Big 5 team of all time but I am not a rational objective observer on that one.

I am surprised that no one mentioned the 90-89 SJU game in 2008.
Easily one of my favorite college moments. The final seconds of the game with a whistle causing a lane violation, giving SJU the ball with less than a second left was easily one of the most nerve wracking times of my life.
Three months later we were at a formal at the same location as TKE from Saint Joe’s. As we were both leaving the venue, we chanted 90-89 from the time we spotted red to the time when we arrived back on campus.
I know and understand the logistics and reasoning around why La Salle / SJU stopped playing at The Palestra, however, the rivalry has never been the same since.

Freshman year. Loved Brooksie and the 79-80 team. Brooks, Kanaskie, Mo Connolly, Butch Lynam, Greg Webster, Don Word. Darryl Gladden. Well balanced team with Brooks dominating. High expectations, only to start out of the gate at 7-6, which included the 108-106 loss to the Danny Ainge BYU team in Utah. Finished the regular season from there going 10-2 which include a win over #8 Notre Dame (Kelly Tripuka) at the Palestra. The 2 Losses were to Joe by 1, and to #1 Depaul featuring Mark Aquirre. 4 wins in the ECC tournament, only to follow with a L against Joe Barry Carroll and his Purdue Team in the NCAAs. The ND win still stands out in my mind. Great win in front of a packed Palestra, great celebration on the roof of one of the dorm buildings facing Olney Ave followed.
SI also had a pretty cool profile of Brooks in one of its editions that year...a black and white photo of Brooksie posing with a basketball on the corner of 20th and Olney next to the La Salle College sign.

For years (and still up at Gola on the first floor), there were pictures of the student section from that game, focused on me and all of my friends, but the mascot is standing in such a way that he blocks me, and only me, out of the frame.

I'm just cut off in the one picture (I'm right next to the guy in the bottom right) and the larger picture is the example of the mascots head and hat totally blocking me out.
