Thanks Glorydays for getting that annual Spencer Haywood posting. True. I have only fixated on his performance for 51 years and I’m just getting warmed up. Believe it was 41 and 32 for Haywood, who would later put out a hit on paul westhead in retribution for westhead benching him for drug use on the 80 lakers Cannon had a triple double in that game. 1 of 4 explorer triple doubles I’m aware of (2 by Gola and 1 by woods)

Under the Random moments spot of this thread, I go back to a non-description Play-in-Game at the Palestra on March 15. 1983. They were 12-13 with two regular season games left to play. They won them and then won three straight ECC tournament games to get into the NCAAs. Their opponent was Boston University coached by this young up and comer named Rick Pitino and his 6th man Brett Brown. You may have heard of him the Sixers Head Coach.
The Palestra was half full and I don't remember if it was just a single game or part of a doubleheader. Wasn't a particulary memorable game on the court but La Salle had three players with a double-double. Chip Greenberg was FR who had 13 pts and 12 rebounds. Truck Butts had 13 pts and 12 rebounds. Tom Piotrowski had 10 pts and 10 rebounds. Ralph Lewis just missed being the fourth member of the D-D club with 11 pts and 9 rebounds. Steve Black had 15 points but there were no rebounds left to be had so he missed out.
La Salle won 70-58 and moved on to face VCU. That win was the first NCAA win by La Salle since beating Iowa in the 1955 NCAA Semi Finals.

Some of my favorite random moments:
1) I was glued watching the big La Salle vs. Central Connecticut State game on CN8 much to the mockery of a few of my friends. Then it ended up as a 4OT thriller with Darnell Harris icing two FTs with no time left to win the game.
2) The very next game we played a pretty decent Florida International team. We were down 16 at the half and 12 with 9 minutes or so left. Then we ended up winning in OT. I was at The Gola for that and it was a really fun atmosphere. I forget who did what scoring wise but I just remembered that Jermaine Thomas was a really good basketball player.
3) I think it was the same season and we had a really tight game against Dayton. We won it at the buzzer (or close to it) after Dr. G drew up a really nice out of bounds play where Steve Smith was the decoy and it let my man Sherman Diaz get wide open for a three from the corner.
4) "The Whistle Game" against St. Joe's at The Palestra is and forever will be one of the best live sporting events I will have ever gone to. That was just Big 5 basketball at its best. Darnell Harris his senior year was ridiculously entertaining. He would just let it fly from anywhere.
5) Even though we lost, the NIT game against Minnesota was such a fun night. Ramon had a breakaway at some point in the game and threw down this crazy reverse dunk. A really underrated player from that era was Earl Pettis.

I honestly think all my positive memories were wiped out and replaced by the 2013 run.

I honestly think all my positive memories were wiped out and replaced by the 2013 run. I think we all fondly remember the Butler game. That was the best. I rank that even above a Phils/Brewers playoff game I went to in 2008 as the best live sporting event I have ever attended. (Also on the list: The first game in NYC after 9/11 where Piazza hit a legendary HR late in the game AND the Phils game that happened when Osama was killed.) But two games that get overlooked and were just as important: 1) We sneaked past Villanova that year in a wild OT win at Tom Gola. Ramon went nuts -- 26 points, 4 assists, 4 boards, 5 steals. But Duren stole the show. He tied the game with six seconds left with a three and also made the game winning layup late in OT. He ended with 23 points and 5 assists. That was Arch's freshman year, so we took down a team with the building blocks to win it all a few seasons later. 2) The wild VCU game which was right after the Butler scalp. That was in Richmond, which is just ridiculously hard to play at. We were up 8 at the half, coughed up a 17-0 run to the Rams, and then somehow ended up winning by 8. I was at a party at my friend's place. I was paying way too much attention to the game so left and went to The Ugly Moose (RIP) to catch the end. 3) The next year, we lost to VCU in an insane 2OT game at Gola. We had the lead in both OTs, too. A buddy of mine who went to VCU came to the game with me. What a crazy experience. Afterwards, we went to McNally's for Schmitters. 4) In 2015, we beat VCU in Richmond in 2OTs. Jordan Price had an all-time box score. 33 points, 18 rebounds (!!!), five assists and five 3s. What a crazy three-year rivalry we had with the Rams.

The South Philly Experiment final year of the Renaissance of La Salle back into National Prominence and The Civic Center and Oh what a ride it was! And also what was to come: To hear the sound of the Train and seeing all the smoke as we bust through the BIG L Sign was one Helluva Entrance and we didn't disappoint the faithful. Attachment DeletedAttachment DeletedAttachment Deleted1989-90 was something special indeed. From four flats on a Cadillac to Ranked 11/12th in the nation to graduation to professional hoops careers. Coming into that year, if correct, we were ranked 20th in the Nation and with a lot of goals to achieve. *We Started the year with winning the Coors Light tournament at Fresno St with beating Missouri St and Fresno St. It was a pretty good defensive effort because we didn't shoot it that well. Don't how all those soda cans got in the bathtub full of ice. * We then blew out Depaul on National TV giving them their worst defeat ever in the Rosemont Horizon. Another defensive effort propelling us to victory. L-Train and Dougie O pretty much carrying us offensively. It was cold as shit in Chi Town.

* We then opened up the Big 5 with back to back W against Penn and Nova. The Train was starting to cruise on the tracks led by the Philly HS locals South Philly High, Dobbins High and Ben Franklin High.
* We took the Train into the Big Easy to do battle with The Ohio State Buckeyes with all star Jim Jackson, Treg Lee, Chris Jent and Perry Carter who by the way drop stepped on my leg and I swear he broke it. He was built like Carl Malone. Any way we handled them by taking care of business L doing his usual conducting with 26p,13r,3a,3bs,2s and the train staff served the other riders appropriately before letting them off at loser station.
*Next up was Florida with front court of 7'2" Dwayne Schnitzius, 6'8" D. Chapman and Davis.
L scored 33pts, 10rebs, 7ast BJ 9pts, 6rebs, 3ast The Kid of Littiz PA tallied 14pts to help support our front court. The creation of our small team was effective especially on pressuring the ball and creating offensive mismatches on the outside spreading the floor and allowing Train to do his conducting.
*Big 5 game #3 v Temple Train will an abscess and all conducted us a 1pt victory. It was brick laying contest but we took care of business to beat TU for our 1st time in 4yrs and improve to 3-0 in the Big 5 and 8-0 on the season.

Don't remember the year but being at the Palestra when we beat a ranked Florida State team in front of a sell out crowd was one of my favorite moments. I remember Lionel and Jack Hurd had big games. That was 88-89 jr year when we won 101-100 and the fans stormed the court. I remember Lou Tilley trying to get an on the spot interview with me as the fans were just in pandemonium and we couldn’t hear a thing😂😂😂. That was the game that put us in the consideration for national rankings. One of the best college basketball games I've ever seen. It was a track meet. Remember it so well, I could probably go back and point out my exact seat. The place was loud, and it seemed like McCloud couldn't miss and we still beat them.

Who are you telling, you should have been out there helping me guard that Mofo😂. I gave it my best B.Jones/M. Cooper defensive effort and he was hitting those shots as if I wasn’t contesting them. I was like damn he hit that shit. I need to get a little closer. Damn he hit that shot again. Maybe I’ll get a little more closer. He finally missed one.😂

I am surprised that no one mentioned the 90-89 SJU game in 2008. Easily one of my favorite college moments. The final seconds of the game with a whistle causing a lane violation, giving SJU the ball with less than a second left was easily one of the most nerve wracking times of my life. Three months later we were at a formal at the same location as TKE from Saint Joe’s. As we were both leaving the venue, we chanted 90-89 from the time we spotted red to the time when we arrived back on campus. I know and understand the logistics and reasoning around why La Salle / SJU stopped playing at The Palestra, however, the rivalry has never been the same since. Great clip. I actually sat in the front row about three seats from the end. I was so close that I pointed out to the ref Pat Driscoll that SJU's Ahmad Nivins had blood on his shorts. It was not a drop but it was like he wiped his hand on it. I said to Driscoll " he's got to leave the game right?" Driscoll didn't say a word. Glanced at the Nivins and then handed him the ball. Hey I tried. In the era when refs spend minutes conferencing those three ( Driscoll, I think Joe Lindsey and not sure of the third ref) spent a grand total of FIVE seconds discussing. I don't think they had a clue what happened with that whistle? Anyone notice G's reaction? He buries his head in his hands after making a "why?" gesture. In otherwords, he didn't know what was going on. No one on the bench knew either to help him out. G didn't even argue the call. Sidenote, the whistle again happened the next year in the game versus SJU (PA) at the Palestra. Don't ask me why I happened to be looking at the SJU Band but I saw a female with the band laugh and put the whistle back in her pocket.

Ah yes, I took that video, and thanks to a friend I have a copy of this game on DVD. @thebestcandyman often upgraded me to floor seats back when I did his taxes. You can hear him in the background saying, "shouldn't he have gotten an intentional foul on that?" I think today they might have called it flagrant, but twelve years ago you didn't used to see it get called very much. (Rodney Green got mauled on the inbounds pass which prevented him from getting to the rim.) Also seen in the video is the late Jim Ahern, who sat right behind me.
