Watch Explorer alum John McCarthy lead the Philadelphia Union vs. New York Red Bulls tonight in the Penalty Kick series after the two teams tied in regulation, 1-1. John McCarthy has been the goalkeeper of choice for the Union during US Open Cup matches as Sylvestre is ineligible. And McCarthy showed a lot of gusto by fending RedBulls off, after the Union went down a player, for an 80 minute stretch, making nine saves and allowing just one goal over 34 shots.
Tough spot to be in given that Blake is sooooooo good.
That was my thought coming into the season, that he would get next to zero meaningful playing time. But since he's proving his worth in Blake's absence, I think he's going to make a career somewhere after this. Whether or not it's in Philly full time doesn't seem to be an impediment to his career trajectory. He'll be at a minimum MLS capable as long as he stays healthy for the next 5 to 10+ years, and teams would be smart to sign him after seeing what he's capable of.
