John Feinstein said on his radio show this morning that the Associated Press (AP) has classified the A10 as a High Major and Big East as a Mid-Major conference. This designation is important with regard to how many reporters actually are sent to a game. Mid-major games without ranked teams get no real coverage.
"The times they are a changin."

and more general write-ups in local papers around the country. This is pretty significant news.
I've felt since Day one of the Big East 2.0 that the A10 could match or beat any team they threw out there
You give me Nova, I give you VCU You give me Xavier, I give you Dayton you give me Georgetown, I give you GW you give me Marquette, I give you SLU
where it really gets messy for the Big East... you give me Seton Hall, I give you La Salle St. John's, I give you St. Joe Providence? URI
and so on...MAYBE the Big East's top team is better than the A10, but 2-10 the A10 overall far exceeds the Big East.

Honestly, this went on the other board and its kind of stupid. The A10 had a better year than the Big East last year but I am not willing to say it will be that way going forward. While currently we may be better VCU is our only brand name program in the A10. Dayton and SLU aren't there yet. UMass also isn't there yet. GW really isn't close. La Salle could be a one hit wonder. SJU doesn't know what consistency is. URI hasn't made the tournament in years. Don't get me wrong I really do like SLU and GW a lot but if someone told me we could exchange them for Marquette and Georgetown I wouldn't even hesitate.
I don't think the Big East is destined for 2 or 3 bids every year. I expect 4 or more this year and going forward.
Why? The Big East currently is recruiting at a much higher level. Last season, Georgetown had a number of injury issues, Marquette and Butler had coaching changes and Providence also had issues with it's players both on and off the court. It was the first year for the Big East so to say its the end in a way is probably ill advised.
I think next year that league is going to be outstanding. Marquette's, Xavier's, Providence and Seton Hall's 2014 and 2015 classes are really good. Nova and Georgetown also should be very good as well.
Also, why it is ill advised to beat up on the Big East. IF they continue to under perform 2-3 teams getting into the tournament the A10 getting raided is a ticking time bomb. If they have success with this 10 team league with 4, 5 or more bids a year we won't have to be concerned.
We don't need to push the Big East out of the way for the media attention. The A10 has to have success year in and out. Most importantly programs like UMass, Dayton, GW or SLU need to become name brand programs in the A10. We can't just have VCU.

Not saying it's a permanent scenario- just trying to demonstrate that the A10 should always be in the same sentence as the Big East because the Big East will never repeat it's original success

Don't get me wrong I really do like SLU and GW a lot but if someone told me we could exchange them for Marquette and Georgetown I wouldn't even hesitate. I think the media designation suggests otherwise. Marquette will be a big question mark withthe coaching change. Georgetown gets the talent, but blows games and seasons year in and out. If the Jesuits were as smart as they say they are, they'd replace JT III with a bright talented coach. But they won't because they are PC. Thus, they are doomed to underperform and in time will watch the A10 pilfer their TV money, to which I say - Amen!
