We got a commitment from a Russian kid. I was told his name in February but never thought it would come to fruition. I mentioned his name in passing to some others on this board.
He is supposedly very good. 6"7 combo forward. My god he fills a need for us.

Is he part of this 2014 class or is he 2015? He's a 2014 recruit but will most likely not play this season. I was told the NCAA will probably make him sit out this year since he played in a semi-pro Czech Republic league this past season and may only get 3 years of eligibility. I was also told his game is similar to Halil Kanecevic's.

That would be fine with me. My Father is always going on about why aren't we bringing in guys from overseas, especially front court. Good to see, and honestly I'd be fine with not seeing him until next year.

“The impact was big, (GBA coach Julian Betko) has played already in NCAA and he has experience in terms of knowing colleges and coaches, basic on the conversation and research about La Salle University and their coach, who is great coach in my opinion and the coach who can continue make me better in NCAA and helping to achieve my goals in future,” Sakhniuk said. Sakhniuk averaged 16 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 1.5 blocks per game in four games against American high school competition with Get Better Academy during the NPSI in February." collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/06/14/lasalle-lands-commitment-from-ukrainian-forward-yevgen-sakhniuk/

For all those that wished for a true small forward this must be Christmas Day.
Interesting to see where and how he fits into G's system. Is G going back to the Green -Barrett -Mbala days of multiple 6-5 to 6-7 guys? Price -Roberts Sakhniuk -Brown and maybe more?
I would think and hope, G will have another forward on his radar. Someone in the 6-8 or bigger range who is not a developmental type in the '15 recruiting class.
Welcome to La Salle and USA Yevgen.

Don't be a stranger Mik. You knowledge and passion for this team has been missed on the board.

I was thinking the same thing about a lineup with mostly 6'5" to 6'7" players. We really need to land another 6'9" or taller player to play next to and/or spell Tony Washington next season. Two starter skilled bigs would provide G with greater strategy and rotation flexibility. A transfer big would be terrific.

"We got a commitment from a Russian kid." "La Salle has received a commitment from 6-7 forward Yevgen Sakhniuk (Ukraine)" Ah, guys, these terms are not exactly synonymous. Even putting aside present unpleasantries between Ukraine and Russia, when I was at La Salle Ukrainian students and professors did not exactly consider themselves Russian (was during the cold war). Anyway, seems like a good recruit. And especially if he only has 3 years, it's better he play in 2015 (with graduations). This year he'd probably be no more than the 4th big man.

Difference now than the Green/Barrett/mbala days is that those guys never had a true PG - there are two on the roster now. Seems to me that playing the 4 guard lineup is going to be a bit of a feature this season

I'm in Russia right now, staying with some people from Eastern Ukraine (originally) who consider themselves Russian. But they have relatives supporting the new government in Kiev. I don't know, I guess the point is that while people feel strongly about these things, all nationality is constructed by people and depends on complex and sometimes contradictory factors. Still, not knowing much about him, stats look good, but I'm only looking at a small sample size. Welcome

Maybe he can teach in La Salle's Central and Eastern European Studies master's program?

The Cold War -- the Russians built the Berlin Wall, invade Hungary, put missiles in Cuba, invade Czechoslovakia, and exile dissidents to Siberia. I understand all of that but when they cheated us out of the Men's Basketball Gold Medal in the 1972 Munich Olympics it really made me hate those commie bastards.
