Here is one fan's breakdown of this year's team:
Tyreek D - Forced to play the first few games as a shell of himself with the injury. Tried his best to run the offense setting up others. Saw miss after miss after miss, subconsciously thinking about lost assists as they are part of the mark of a point guard. This while enduring constant foot pain and lack of usual mobility and quickness. Has had breakout scoring games, but he is not a scorer by nature - he realized he simply had to since no one else was putting the ball in the basket. He probably figures his senior year is as far from what he envisioned as possible. It looks like G is experimenting of late by having Garland and Lewis play more point guard hoping to take advantage of Duren's 3 point shooting and willingness to shoot the ball.
Tyrone G - The lack of an outside threat or any other true, reliable scoring option results in him taking it to the hoop after leaving his man in the dust. The bigs are just camped out waiting since neither JW or Zack are well schooled at positioning themselves for passes underneath. (Zack is often not even that near to the basket). As noted, his forward landing form is not good for 3-pointers. He feels pressured to score for reasons to follow below. His defense is not always that bad, but is impacted by the offensive end.
Jerrell W - He has bullish moves when receiving the ball without a double team. When doubled, he does not quickly pass out to take advantage. I heard that he was developing his right hand but I've seen little of it. He needs to develop a 10-12 foot shot. His scoring game is primarily dunks with a few layups. I really thought his performance last year would bring improvement in leaps and bounds, but it hasn't. He will never be a great defender but is much better about avoiding fouls. I still scratch my head about games with minimal playing time since he can get six straight La Salle points at any point in a game.
Sam M - I don't understand his offense at all as a senior with a high career 3 point %. I'm sick of announcers mentioning it. So often, his first instinct upon catching a pass outside is hesitancy, then getting it to somebody else. His first instinct should be to shoot it - because the split second hesitancy allows someone to pick him up. He is an excellent defensive player, but his offensive style takes away from the outside shooting strength he should offer. Hence the disappearing mode so many refer to.
DJ Peterson - Close to a clone of Mills regarding the hesitancy instinct. Potential three's wasted. DJ allows himself to go uncovered due to his lack of shooting, making the game seem 4 against 5. Again, good defense and he works hard.
